Tell me the name you love but can't use

After a conversation with friends we all have a name that we love but can't use for various reasons

Our examples are:

Jame- because an ex bil was called that and its weird to have a nephew with the same name as your ex husband

Lyra - friends parents ended up adopting a dog with that name

Iris- goes absolutely horribly with my surname

So tell me your names that you cant justifiably choose! Are you someone that loved the name myra but have a horrid aunt called it? Or have an impossible surname that combines awkwardly with a beautiful name?

I really liked Adonis but my family kept saying ‘but what if he’s ugly’ and it wasn’t traditional enough for DH

oohmyback · 15/03/2021 19:35

Hayden....rhymes with my surname....Good job I don't actually like it!

I love Coralie but my husbands cousin is called that and she's a knob.

Heysiriyoutwat · 15/03/2021 19:38

Myra.

I think it's a beautiful name and I would have loved to have named one of my two dds that. But, you know. Tainted with utter evil.

PaperHalo · 15/03/2021 19:43

Norma Jean after both of my grannies. OH was having none of it so we settled on Norma Rose. It’s beautiful but not what I had hoped for...

AgathaAllAlong · 15/03/2021 20:13

Oh also Sabrina. Love it, and hoped that the teenage witch association was long in the past but with the revival think it's still out.

AuntyMabelandPippin · 15/03/2021 20:24

Louise. I think it's such a lovely name.

I only had boys.

GrasswillbeGreener · 15/03/2021 20:41

Like a previous poster, we have a surname that rules out a lot of lovely names - anything beginning with A or P, and probably I and T, was ruled straight out. A couple of other names ruled themselves out when rhyming phrases were noted. We then ruled out even more options by deciding we would ensure our children didn't share our initials.

Double-barrelling our surnames was also completely inappropriate, being a total gift to anyone with latent bullying tendencies. Ironically, my teenage DS has developed the kind of personality (along with ability) that would enable him to carry it off, and I told him once that he's welcome to add my surname if he ever wants to. DH's surname is also one swapped pair of letters away from a very ordinary boy's name, such that he gets miscalled it fairly regularly. DS said the other day, why didn't we call him that? Again, teasing potential ... but the way he's turned out he'd have been fine with it :)

Greysofa · 15/03/2021 20:52

Benjamin for a boy because of an ex who broke my heart and Daisy for a girl, because with out surname, it sounds like a breed of cow

BananaHammock23 · 15/03/2021 20:58

Max! It's my brother's name and my family think it's too weird to use it

AdditionalCharacter · 15/03/2021 21:04

Naomi - never had a daughter

Duncan - would be called Duncan doughnuts or Dunc the hunk

RunAwayNow · 15/03/2021 21:04

Margaret/Maggie. For obvious reasons.

MrsAvocet · 15/03/2021 21:10

Our surname begins with an H and ends in a Y which ruled out most first nsmes begining with H as the alliteration sounded silly, and I also liked Emily but it was really hard to say with our surname.

AndTheyLivedHappilyEverAfter · 15/03/2021 21:10

Rupert- I love it but everyone seems to think it's awful.

Ivy- It was my top girls name until I found out that it was the nickname for the mortuary at the hospital I work at!

ILoveSlipperss · 15/03/2021 21:29

Isabella- couldn’t stand if it was shortened to izzy
Luna- my brothers cat
Amelia- due to some awful women screeching it at her naughty child or people calling her “meely”.
Reign- my mom constantly singing purple rain whenever I mentioned the name.
Mia- we had a cat called Mia and even though I could look past it others couldn’t.

I went through 100’s of names, such a nightmare.
We finally settled on Esmé when she was a few days old and it’s absolutely perfect for her!

funtimefrank · 15/03/2021 21:34

Elizabeth. Would have been Beth for every day. Is a favourite extended family members name and felt too close.

Megan - dhs ex girlfriend

Henry - no boy and dh didn't think trying for a third child just to call it Henry was appropriate (joke)

funtimefrank · 15/03/2021 21:39

Oh and Flora. Loved this but dh vetoed due to unsavoury connotations.

He had a real gift for finding the lowest common denominator in terms teasing/nickname potential. Came from a good place - didn't want to pick something which made kid a target but god it ruined some good names Sad

WingingIt101 · 15/03/2021 21:39

I love Aurora but someone told me it’s a common pseudonym used by adult “film” stars. Well and truly spoilt that one.

Woody. Goes hideously with our surname.
Edward. Also really doesn’t work with our surname.

Diverseopinions · 15/03/2021 21:39

Gloria.
Didn't have a girl.

Also Mercedes.
A spiritual name, but always to be associated with the car.

I decided last night that I liked Flossie.

PussInBin20 · 15/03/2021 22:01

Isla - but our surname is Wright and we don’t live too far away from there so a definite no, no.

However I always tell my DD that that is her “real” name.

Changechangychange · 15/03/2021 22:06

Sophie - SIL’s name, and also DBro’s GF’s name.

Florian - love it, not brave enough

Dima/Dimitri - see above. Also wouldn’t go with our surname.

Changechangychange · 15/03/2021 22:08

Oh yes, Felicity - my PhD supervisor’s name, it would look like I’d named the baby after her.

Robert - current boss’s name. Liked it long before I ever met him.

SavannahLands · 15/03/2021 22:12

Charlotte, or Lotte for short, it rhymes awful with our Surname.
Quite a few groups of initials, ending in M, poor DH is a victim of this, and finds it quite embarassing if ever he is asked to initial anything, Goodness knows what his mother was thinking of at the time!

Usernamenotavailabletryanother · 15/03/2021 22:18

DD1 is Angie.

My favourite boys name was Denny, and we were set on it for DC2 (who thankfully turned out to be another DD)

We would have had Angie and Den.

This didn’t occur to me until a long time afterwards Grin

AnnaSW1 · 15/03/2021 22:20

Sophia and Stanley

CupoTeap · 15/03/2021 22:21

Turned out he already had a child with that name!
