Jacket potatoes and omelettes are not a dinner. Discuss.

According to my usually fairly normal and reasonable DH, jackets potatoes and omelettes are not " a dinner". He is unable to expand upon this statement and when questioned, just keeps repeating "not a dinner".

Does anyone else have an opinion on this, and if you agree with him, do you have any evidence to back up this assertion?

As someone who has eaten a bag of babybels for dinner before, I can confirm that any food be it omelette, jacket potato or a fuckin raisin can be a dinner if one wishes it to be.

anamazingfind · 09/03/2021 18:56

No, it's a lunch. Omelette with peas and some type of chips/hash browns or other potato thing is a dinner. Jacket potato with lots of interesting veg might just scrape in.

shinynewapple21 · 09/03/2021 18:57

I think my DH would agree that omelette or jacket potatoes wouldn't be substantial enough for his main meal . The same for a meal that doesn't contain meat or fish.

If I was cooking just for me I would live on soup, jacket potato or similar quick meal .

NigellaSeed · 09/03/2021 18:58

Omelette is more of a lunch imo - if I ate egg Envy

Jacket potatoe needs padding out to upgrade it from lunch to dinner.

IntermittentParps · 09/03/2021 18:59

I would guess that its the lack of meat thats bothering him.

Who says a jacket potato or omelette automatically doesn't have meat? Tuna on a baked potato, or bacon mayo... and an omelette can have meat in. What a weird thing to say.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/03/2021 19:09

Does he think a Proper Dinner must contain meat?
Not an unusual opinion IMO (not that I agree with it). A much younger SiL of mine (not a Brit) thinks that a proper dinner must contain meat and be hot, so even cold meat and salad doesn’t count as a Proper Meal. Even if it’s lunch!

SeaKelp101 · 09/03/2021 19:17

Someone should ask Gwen if its a dinner Grin

tobee · 09/03/2021 19:22

I had omelette and Boursin for dinner last night. Go me! Grin

ElizaLaLa · 09/03/2021 19:52

This was my dinner, and it certainly was a dinner 🤷‍♀️

Tortilla, salad and tzatziki.

Jacket potatoes and omelettes are not a dinner. Discuss.

For a male I’d imagine it’s a lunch. But deffo a dinner. Kids always have them for lunch and dinner.

NovemberR · 09/03/2021 20:16

Jacket potato and omelettes are what I would call 'dinner' if you have it at midday. Not teatime.

Tea is the main meal of the day and needs to be substantial. Jacket potato is a side dish to go with sausages and beans. Or pie. Something like that. Even with a filling it's still not a dinner.

Omelette needs chips with it. Grin

I had to think for a while before asking if you were trying to get at me!

I never have things on the side with an omelette. If I'm hungry I use 3 eggs instead of two and put lots of filling. Doesn't need anything else
ALongHardWinter · 09/03/2021 20:20

Oh I hate it when people proclaim that certain things 'aren't a dinner'. My son-in-law does this. According to him, anything that does not constitute the traditional meat and 3 veg is not a meal. My Dd blames his mother. Grin

BackforGood · 09/03/2021 20:22

I've just polished off a jacket potato for my main meal of the day.
It was rather nice.

Didn't have an omelette though. That would be a different night.

Having both in one meal for me would be a bit much.

Gwenhwyfar · 09/03/2021 20:22

"Jacket potato is a side dish to go with sausages and beans."

A small jacket potato without filling can be an accompanying veg, but if it's full of cheese or beans it's a meal! A normal-sized baked potato with filling as well as a full dinner would be too much surely? It's never sold like that in restaurants.

It is in the kind of restaurants I would eat in! Smile

American diners and steak house type places would do this. I can't imagine just having a baked potato (with or without filling) as my main meal of the day.

My DH famously (in my family, anyway) declared a fondue to be "more of a snack than a meal".But then he is, usually, making a sandwich half an hour after a roast dinner... 🐽

maddiemookins16mum · 09/03/2021 20:55

Together? No. But only cos ‘they don’t go’, much like sweetcorn on a roast.

With something else, yes.

Jacket, chop, salad - tick.

Omelette, chips and beans - another tick.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 09/03/2021 20:58

It's exactly what I and DH had tonight - mushroom and cheese omelette, jacket potato and salad. Very filling and healthy imo

MondeoFan · 09/03/2021 21:51

They are both dinners

I definitely agree with him! They are LUNCH!

TheOneWithTheBigNose · 10/03/2021 13:02

@DarlingWithoutYou

I definitely agree with him! They are LUNCH!
Unless you have them for dinner, and then they’re a dinner.
pepeleputois · 10/03/2021 13:09

@DarlingWithoutYou

I definitely agree with him! They are LUNCH!
but WHY? Confused

what is diner? A light supper of crumpets or something?
