Jacket potatoes and omelettes are not a dinner. Discuss.

According to my usually fairly normal and reasonable DH, jackets potatoes and omelettes are not " a dinner". He is unable to expand upon this statement and when questioned, just keeps repeating "not a dinner".

Does anyone else have an opinion on this, and if you agree with him, do you have any evidence to back up this assertion?

@userxx

Wow. Never knew such a combo existed, I won't knock it until I've tried it.
Tis a rare treat. Best with bacon lol. We were poor kids and lived on potatoes and eggs a lot
rcd · 10/03/2021 21:41

Typical bloke, let him make his own food.

SleepingStandingUp · 10/03/2021 21:46

@Lovetoplan

Well....my DH says things like this. I would investigate what his Mum used to cook and stick to that so that you don't get daft comments!!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
AlwaysLatte · 10/03/2021 21:55

I would be so tempted to serve that up for breakfast for him.

AlwaysLatte · 10/03/2021 21:58

In any case I would do either a baked potato or an omelette for lunch, not dinner. But absolutely would and have served up the two together with salad in the evening.

Stoppissingonmyheather · 10/03/2021 22:20

A dinner is what you eat in the evening so if eaten in the evening yes it's a dinner however if eaten at lunchtime it becomes lunch and if eaten in morning it becomes yes breakfast so depending on what time of day it was your husband is most likely wrong but possibly right too

amicissimma · 10/03/2021 22:35

If I'm cooking it's whatever meal I say it is.

Want something different? Cook it yourself. And buy the ingredients and clean up the kitchen afterwards.

TinselTinsel · 10/03/2021 22:41

I think I will do jacket potato for dinner tomorrow just to prove him wrong lol

HappydaysArehere · 10/03/2021 22:56

We have a mushroom omelette once a week but with potatoes and veg or baked beans. We have five eggs between two of us. Also nice with sweet potato wedges done in the oven.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 10/03/2021 23:08

We had jacket potatoes tonight, with chilli and grated cheese, and a big salad. Definitely dinner! An omelette we would have with salad again, and crusty bread.

Soup is definitely lunch here though, unless I was home alone and couldn’t be bothered to cook something, then I might heat up a tin.

Mamanyt · 10/03/2021 23:24

Omelets are big here in the states. Recently went out to breakfast and ordered one that was stuffed full with ham, steak, mushrooms, bell peppers, onions, cheese, and tomatoes. Managed to eat about 1/3 of it, brought the rest home and reheated for my dinner. It was not a light meal by anyone's standards. Depends on what you stuff them with, I suppose.

grannieali · 10/03/2021 23:48

What the man means is probably "there is no meat on the plate", but daren't say it.

Charm23 · 11/03/2021 00:02

I'm more likely to have JP/Omelette as a lunch. JP is more substantial so would be okay for a dinner but an omelette is a bit light imo.

BigPaperBag · 11/03/2021 09:34

Only a dinner if I’d had a large lunch. Otherwise feels a bit measly.

Crunchymum · 11/03/2021 09:38

Jacket potato = dinner (usually with chilli or bolognese or beans and cheese)
Omelette = lunch (on its own)
Soup = lunch (with some kind of bread or crackers... or something?)

I'd feel cheated to have just soup or an Omelette for dinner. I am fat though Grin

Armadiloes · 11/03/2021 11:19

Lol I'm a bit weird like this with food!

Lunches are non hot foods with the exception of light hot meals like baked potatoes, toasties, portion of chips etc... However these can be hot summer evening meals.

Dinner (evening meal) is always hot and I have a weird thing about pasta, its not a meal unless it has a protein (chicken etc..) or a carb (garlic bread, chips) preferably both together for the evening meal. However I would include things like mugshots, pot noodles in the lunch section.

I'm also in Scotland and my mum is forever correcting me its breakfast, dinner and tea not breakfast, lunch and Dinner - Dinner to me is always hot - Tea is a drink or afternoon tea which it is accompanied by scones/cakes.

I have no idea where these ideas are rooted from! My work colleagues are always amused at my food quirks.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 11/03/2021 12:18

Omelette is definitely a dinner, especially with sides. I often make Spanish style omelette with onions / peppers / potatoes / chorizo, it’s a good way to use up leftovers.
Jacket spuds are also dinner; with cheese, beans, and coleslaw; or tuna mayo salad, or a scoop of chilli. I haven’t made it for ages, but I used to do a filling where I pan fried sliced chicken, onions, peppers, halved cherry tomatoes, then took it off the heat and stirred in grated cheese and mayonnaise. Quite fancy that now!

kennycat · 15/03/2021 16:18

We have Spanish omelette frequently for tea but it’s jam packed with spuds, veg and sometimes something like bacon. Then served with beans and often toast too. I wouldn’t be happy with just a cheese omelette for my tea.

Jackpots Are a tea as long as chock full of beans/tuna/cheese/all of the above.
Soup isn’t considered a proper teA here despite my protestations.

KatherineJaneway · 15/03/2021 20:54

Jackpots

That's a new one on me Grin
