Jacket potatoes and omelettes are not a dinner. Discuss.

According to my usually fairly normal and reasonable DH, jackets potatoes and omelettes are not " a dinner". He is unable to expand upon this statement and when questioned, just keeps repeating "not a dinner".

Does anyone else have an opinion on this, and if you agree with him, do you have any evidence to back up this assertion?

Maybe it depends on the portion sizes? I love oven baked jacket potato with lots of cheese. Perhaps accompanied with a chicken salad or tuna salad or a Mexican bean salad loaded on top as a topping. Now I’m hungry Grin

patternnews · 09/03/2021 15:16

I think they are filling enough for a dinner, but definitely need veg or salad too.

Bottomlesspit21 · 09/03/2021 15:21

Sorry but wouldn’t be a dinner for me. Omelette for breakfast or lunch, jacket potato as a lunch or a side!

My view is reflected in my username 😂

BoomBoomsCousin · 09/03/2021 15:21

I think of omelettes as lunch food. Jacket potato is just a starch, depends what you serve with it.

I wouldn’t want a jacket potato with an omelette for any meal.

minniemoocher · 09/03/2021 15:23

Jacket potatoes are an accompaniment to a meal. An omelettes more of a breakfast/brunch meal but served with chips is a meal I suppose, I personally wouldn't though

TalktotheFoot · 09/03/2021 15:23

Jacket potatoes and omelettes in rotation for dinner for a whole week. When he complains, tell him to go and buy the food he wants, and cook his own dinner then.

mummywantstobeslim · 09/03/2021 15:25

Of course they are a dinner, especially if that's all you've got in the house

IntermittentParps · 09/03/2021 15:30

They are. I love a chunky veg omelette with greens or salad leaves, and some buttered toast. Or a big baked potato or two with tuna, cheese, butter and salt. Or with chilli. Or sour cream.

But why do you ask? Are you making his dinner and he's chucking his toys out the pram when you make omelette or baked potatoes? If so then he is welcome to make his fuckingown, isn't he?

And why is he unable to express himself beyond repeating "not a dinner"? Is he simple?

gingercat02 · 09/03/2021 15:30

Depends IMO. Jacket potato as the main carb of a meal (instead of boiled/mash/etc) or with substantial filling (chilli/curry/etc and veg) definitely a dinner. Jacket potato with tuna mayo probably lunch
Omelette chips and salad definitely a dinner, omelette alone brunch/lunch

goodbyelenin · 09/03/2021 15:38

Jacket potatoes are an accompaniment to a meal. Confused

Blimey, I cook from scratch pretty much every single day of the year, but I am amazed that people would bother wasting the gorgeous laziness of a jacket potato (preparation, approximatively 1 minutes with the toppings) and the bits on the side if you must, and cook other dishes on top!

Do you people use mini potatoes? Why not cooking a big "jacket potato" size thing and be done with it?

Tal45 · 09/03/2021 15:54

Yes sounds like the difference between a man's dinner and a woman's dinner.

needadvice54321 · 09/03/2021 15:56

We're having jacket potatoes tonight. We'd have both, but with something else, so tonight is jacket potatoes, beans and cheese with breaded chicken. We'd always have salad or chips with an omelette

OneKeyAtATime · 09/03/2021 16:01

I don't think they go together but individually yes they are meals to me

sueelleker · 09/03/2021 16:14

@Megan2018

Definitely depends on context.

A small jacket potato with butter on it's own is not dinner. A large jacket with fillings is. Same with an omelette, depends on the number of eggs, the filling and the sides.

A 3 egg omelette with cheese and mushrooms, chips and side salad is one of my favourite dinners :)

I love a cheese and mushroom omelette! I couldn't manage a 3 egg one and chips though.
Londontown12 · 09/03/2021 16:17

Yummy I’d eat both as a dinner with a nice side salad with omelette or if I’m being a pig some fries and beans !
And jacket potatoes soooo many variations!!!

sueelleker · 09/03/2021 16:17

Except DH’s omelettes which are big enough to feed a whole street. I read a quote in a book once where someone was making a 12 egg omelette for friends; he thought it was big enough to qualify as an "om" rather than an "omelette"

Oh it was worth reading to the end for this Grin
JackieWeaver4PrimeMinister · 09/03/2021 17:39

Omelette was an option in pubs as a "substantial meal" to be allowed a drink with before, what more evidence does he need? What's his views on a scotch egg I wonder?

PyongyangKipperbang · 09/03/2021 17:44

I would guess that its the lack of meat thats bothering him.

My mother would eat that but would probably not be happy, she would have either one or the other for lunch. But then she is of the opinion that a dinner should include a large amount of carbs, plus meat, plus veg. If its smothered in gravy all the better but she will concede the occasional curry or pasta dish!

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 09/03/2021 17:50

That's the kind of statement made by someone who never has to provide 'a dinner'. Let him make his own and get on with your own perfectly normal and acceptable dinner.

PickAChew · 09/03/2021 17:54

So are you not joining in with the discussion, @TwigTheWonderKid or are we to simply discuss it amongst ourselves?

So long as there's some sort of veg, it's a meal.

pippasweddingdress · 09/03/2021 18:07

If you have a healthy diet, there's no need to have "veg" at every single meal. An omelette and a yogurt or something for diner are absolutely fine.

CinnamonStar · 09/03/2021 18:16

I would categorise a jacket potato (with topping, and salad) etc as a light meal.
I think salad makes something "light".
We do usually have them in the evening though. Sometimes you want a light meal in the evening.

Omelette I would have filled with cheese and ham or mushrooms, with chips and runner beans, or peas or something, which would make it more substantial.

DrWankincense · 09/03/2021 18:21

Both are acceptable as a dinner.

veeeeh · 09/03/2021 18:27

I cannot eat much at the moment to to a stomach bacterial infection and humungous amounts of antibiotics. Nausea all the time.

I would give anything to be able to eat a jacket spud and an omelette, but it is not happening any time soon.

I don't mean to sound "poor me", but it is awful. Enjoy whatever you cook and do not complain!
