According to my usually fairly normal and reasonable DH, jackets potatoes and omelettes are not " a dinner". He is unable to expand upon this statement and when questioned, just keeps repeating "not a dinner".

Does anyone else have an opinion on this, and if you agree with him, do you have any evidence to back up this assertion?

Yes but it just feels wrong, same as having a midweek meal at the weekend. I know there’s no logic.

pepeleputois · 10/03/2021 13:58

now I am curious... what IS a midweek meal?

What the what now?
Weepingwillows12 · 10/03/2021 14:08

I sort of agree. I feel deep in my soul that omelette and jacket potatoes are both light meals or a lunch not a proper dinner. No clue why I feel that Grin

LolaSmiles · 10/03/2021 14:08

Midweek meals are the sort of quick and easy meals that you do between getting in from work and putting the children to bed.

The weekend it's a good opportunity to cook the dishes you really enjoy but haven't got time for after work.

so completely the other way round for other families.

We have even less time (or will) to cook during the weekend than during the week.

Brace yourself, because what I say next will really shock you.

Sometimes I cook a roast on a weekday. And that's not all. If there's leftovers, sometimes I have them the next day. For breakfast.

Honestly, I can't believe some of the rules and restrictions people impose on themselves about what food can be eaten when. Someone upthread said it best.

If it's food you have for dinner, it's a dinner.

But after all that, the OP hasn't come back anyway, to let us know if her DH had managed to expand at all exactly why omelettes and jacket potatoes weren't dinner when eaten at dinner time.

pepeleputois · 10/03/2021 16:21

It's so much easier to cook a roast on a day I work from home (so any day this year...) than on a Saturday or Sunday.

I am not convinced by the leftover for breakfast though.

Pizza, on the other hand Grin

England is famous for eating sausages, eggs, bacon, mushroom, black pudding for breakfast let's be honest

pepeleputois · 10/03/2021 16:22

There has been a few debates over the suitability of pancakes for diner Grin

JanuaryJonez · 10/03/2021 16:36

They definitely are a dinner in our house, but happen to be the two I least look forward to cooking or eating as they're quite basic.

We always have them each every few weeks though as they so cheap, nutritious and easy.

BrownEyedGirl80 · 10/03/2021 17:16

I can confirm that salted microwave popcorn and wine makes an excellent alternative dinner

ilovechocolate07 · 10/03/2021 17:19

Well I had poached egg on toast and weetabix for mine last night.

josbd · 10/03/2021 17:24

Dinner, definitely.

Can only assume that he does not want to eat them. Sod him!

Bertiebiscuit · 10/03/2021 17:30

Maybe he should cook you what he does consider to be a "dinner" - every night - tbh omelette or jacket potatoes are my standard I'm busy dinners

MerryMarigold · 10/03/2021 17:31

I think it really depends what you're serving it with.

Small Jacket potato, cheese and a few bits of tomato = lunch
Large Jacket pot, baked beans, bacon, cheese = dinner

Omelette = breakfast
Omelette, wedges and salad = dinner

AdoraBell · 10/03/2021 17:33

Entirely depends on the time.

7 am, not dinner

Midday not dinner

6/7/8 pm dinner.

Regardless of what is cooked.

If your DH doesn’t agree then he can cook “dinner” for the family.

AdoraBell · 10/03/2021 17:36

Oops, forgot about regional differences there, sorry 🤦‍♀️

Some people say dinner for the meal during the day. I’ve always known that as lunch.

ElizaLaLa · 10/03/2021 17:38

Fucks sake, now I fancy omelette and salad for dinner again. I had tortilla and salad yesterday because of this thread 😂

crazeelala2u · 10/03/2021 17:39

Dinner is anything you eat at dinner time. There's not set menu, IMO.

JeanClaudeVanDammit · 10/03/2021 17:41

DH can be a bit like this. As far as he’s concerned if there’s no meat it’s not a main meal. He often has to cook his own because as far as I’m concerned, jacket potato, beans and cheese is a great tea!

EmpressSuiko · 10/03/2021 17:46

I wouldn’t eat either of those options for lunch as it would be far too much for me, I consider them both to be quite filling and heavy so they’d definitely be a dinner option for me.

clarehhh · 10/03/2021 17:46

Needs veg or salad

Freak8 · 10/03/2021 17:48

All my family have these as dinners. Its filling and a very good simple easy meal

GameSetMatch · 10/03/2021 17:49

Can I ask how everybody feels about a chicken omelette? my DH mentioned them at work and everyone looked disgusted and said they had never heard of one....

missymoomoomoomoomoo · 10/03/2021 17:49

Of.course they are among as accompanied with something
