Jacket potatoes and omelettes are not a dinner. Discuss.

According to my usually fairly normal and reasonable DH, jackets potatoes and omelettes are not " a dinner". He is unable to expand upon this statement and when questioned, just keeps repeating "not a dinner".

Does anyone else have an opinion on this, and if you agree with him, do you have any evidence to back up this assertion?

An omelette with a green salad is a thing of beauty. It is a faff though. I would see a cheesy baked potato as a side dish not a main meal. You need chilli or similar to make it a proper dinner.

MinesAPintOfTea · 10/03/2021 19:41

Have the jacket potatoes tonight and do an extra one. Tomorrow do an omelette with diced potato. Food of gods.

But yes, if dh wants something more complex, he can cook it.

Chasingsquirrels · 10/03/2021 19:43

It is a dinner if you have it for dinner (whichever meal of the day that is for you).

diamondpony80 · 10/03/2021 19:51

We would normally eat those for lunch so I’m sure my DH would say the same. Dinner is whatever you want it to be though.

dramaticpenguin · 10/03/2021 19:54

I started exactly this thread in a group in fb, over 300 people agreed with me that jacket potatoes can be dinner and about 5 agreed with my husband, that they are not. I showed him the thread 🤣

marktayloruk · 10/03/2021 19:55

I"m about to cook myself a few jacket potatoes - my evening meal.

Localocal · 10/03/2021 19:58

Absolutely dinner.

Dentistlakes · 10/03/2021 20:02

It would be for me, but DH would be hungry eating an omelette or baked potato for dinner (he would for lunch though). I often have an omelette and salad or baked potato with tuna and salad for dinner.

FaceyRomford · 10/03/2021 20:09

Depends. A jacket potato and a two egg omelette is not a dinner. Two spuds and a four egg omelette is.

Zerrin13 · 10/03/2021 20:10

I would love this for dinner but husband would feel shortchanged!

Yourcatisnotsorry · 10/03/2021 20:11

Not a dinner in my house either 😂 I like both and have them for lunch. Beans on toast though is a dinner though but cheese on toast is a snack. There is no logic.

Ifeelsuchafool · 10/03/2021 20:19

I had home made soup and an apple and cheese for dinner tonight. I'm perfectly satisfied and thrilled that the soup was kindly made for me. Your DH sounds a bit precious tbh. Not to mention a bit greedy 🤣

TheOneWithTheBigNose · 10/03/2021 20:20

I had a bag of smarties eggs for dinner tonight so yeah, an omelette or a jacket potato sounds fine to me.

SleepingStandingUp · 10/03/2021 20:33

It sounds a bit rank tbh, I wouldn't have omelette with any potato, only fried egg with chips or mash, it all sounds a bit dry. Can't explain it beyond that and not technically his point I guess but bleurgh. I'd swap one of them for beans

RedcurrantPuff · 10/03/2021 20:35

We had jacket potatoes for dinner tonight

Yum.

skippink · 10/03/2021 20:36

Me and my family had a jacket potato each for tea tonight and just had different toppings

greenlynx · 10/03/2021 20:45

I wouldn’t have omelette with jacket potato for dinner but can easily have jacket potato with egg mayonnaise and salad for dinner, DH would happily eat this as well. I don’t like omelette much so rarely cook it but jacket potato could be for lunch or for dinner equally. Soup could be for lunch or dinner, cake could be eaten at any time. I don’t like pizza or pasta for lunch, it’s too heavy for me, otherwise I’m fine.

Lovetoplan · 10/03/2021 20:46

Well....my DH says things like this. I would investigate what his Mum used to cook and stick to that so that you don't get daft comments!!

Bloody hell he’s not a child. He can cook his own food if he’s got an issue. DH does most of our cooking (he enjoys it). Imagine telling him to ask my mum what she used to cook for me so that I don’t moan about what I’m provided Grin

You need a knife and fork to eat beans on toast but not for cheese on toast. You might not even need a plate for cheese on toast.
MummyMayo1988 · 10/03/2021 21:03

I love a nice big jacket potato. It's soo versatile!
Butter, cheese and salad in summer. Chilli in winter.
You can't go wrong.

Say what.......... fried egg with mash ?

SleepingStandingUp · 10/03/2021 21:11

Yes, runny yolk only though

userxx · 10/03/2021 21:15

Wow. Never knew such a combo existed, I won't knock it until I've tried it.

Babygotblueyes · 10/03/2021 21:26

Tempted to say that if it is served at dinner time it is definitively 'a dinner'.
