Borrowing uniform from school tomorrow

160 replies

BrighleyS · 07/03/2021 17:56

Hi
I'm new and just joined really just to ask advice/Query

Is anyone else having to make their kids borrow uniform from school for the first few days till we can get new stuff.

I realise it was totally irresponsible not to check before tonight. Like ridiculous really!

Anyway, My daughters Skirt, tights etc won't be ready in time etc, Am I unresonable to make her loan spare ones from the school, just for Tomorrow.

Anyone else doing this? If so What are you having to borrow.

I want to prove to her she won't be the only one!

@FlibbertyGiblets

Hi new poster, how old is DD and is she likely to have a wee wee accident? Just wondering. Smile
why does that matter?

For the record she is in secondary school

But she did wee herself in Primary twice, if that really matters

I think it’s because for me (and others) asking the school would have been the last resort without trying all other avenues, not the first option. But we’re all different 🤷🏻‍♀️.
Anyway in response to the question in your OP about whether anyone else is doing this... no we’re not.

kowari · 07/03/2021 18:36

I'd just let a hem down or send my child with a note explaining why a uniform is too small if it is likely to be a problem. DS will be wearing a rugby shirt on games day with his wrists sticking out until his bigger one arrives. Unless the uniform is so small that they are going to be uncomfortable then I would send them in what they have.

@NerrSnerr

How far in advance did you know OP? When did you ask them? (Or are they working on a Sunday?)
Nerr the OP says uniform tried on tonight, and as this was posted about 6pm I imagine the email request to furnish DD with a school uniform item went very recently.
FlibbertyGiblets · 07/03/2021 18:37

Ah I see thank you OP.

BikeRunSki · 07/03/2021 18:37

OP, you’re not alone, my local Facebook groups are full of people asking for school uniform to beg, borrow or buy.

NerrSnerr · 07/03/2021 18:37

I thought she'd be a key stage 1 child with all this talk of accidents.

Have the school said they definitely have her size?

I would have been mortified at secondary to have to borrow uniform from school. I'd still ask around friends/ local groups.

BrighleyS · 07/03/2021 18:37

@FlibbertyGiblets

Ah I see thank you OP.
What do you mean?

Not by me!!! Other people brought it up!

These threads keep cropping up.

Op: is anyone else doing this
Everyone: hell no, it's a bit shit
Op: no it's not

😂 Why ask?

Roszie · 07/03/2021 18:39

We have spares but it's very hit and miss. We wouldn't have enough for three kids in the same year for example.

FlibbertyGiblets · 07/03/2021 18:39

I thought she was a little one, with all the attendant worries about toilet issues, thank you for explaining.

NerrSnerr · 07/03/2021 18:40

@BrighleyS

So hypothetically
She wets herself one day at school... I'm at work so she has to borrow spare clothes from school... how is different
.

That's what you said- that's why I assumed she was about 5.

No I was being sarcastic, saying well if she did, or if she fell in a puddle or the mud etc

Our secondary schools had stacks of lost property.
How long will she have to wait before she can be given a skirt that fits her though?

Me as well, as you can see.

I missed the sarcasm, how embarrassing.

They replied about 10 mins later saying they had plenty of spares in stock

There is zero harm in asking the school, and making them aware. If they have something you can borrow - great, if not don't worry about it. There will be loads of kids going back to school tomorrow in whatever anyone can get hold of. Quite a few ankles showing, and a mismatch of jumpers.

A lot of supermarkets have nothing, delivery times are certainly interesting if you can find anything elsewhere. School uniform suppliers in the main are still shut. Even Amazon hasn't been great, I managed to get a couple of tops & some leggings. The trousers when they eventually arrived are huge.

On top that hasn't everyone noticed that months of confinement and all the extra sleeping, eating, grazing - the growth spurts have been woooooah. So loads more children needing replacement uniform at a time of year where even in normal times it's a bit of a rarity.

All in the same make do boat on this one.

Lazypuppy · 07/03/2021 18:43

How embarrassing for your daughter tomorrow having to go in and then change into spare uniform. Great they have her size , but no its not normal imo and i'm prerty sure there will only be a handful if any kids doing the same.

You've had loads of notice that schools would be going back, and 2 weeks confirmed start date.

maxineputyourredshoeson · 07/03/2021 18:45

OP have the school replied? I know you said you have emailed them.

Our school usually have loads of spares etc but have actually got rid of it all because of Covid. My DD has had a huge growth spurt and her jumper no longer fits and because she’s Y6 and doesn’t have very long left I didn’t fancy paying for one with the logo on, I emailed the school to ask if they had any and that’s when they said they had got rid of it all.

Unless they reply I personally wouldn’t bank on them having it.

They did reply and said no problem if she needs to borrow a skirt.

Someone replied within 10 minutes, on a Sunday evening, with a detailed knowledge of what garments and sizes are in the spare uniform closet?

Very different from my DCs school!

maxineputyourredshoeson · 07/03/2021 18:47

Ah sorry cross post....

dementedpixie · 07/03/2021 18:47

It's a bit strange. Not sure my kids would be impressed at going into school with ill-fitting clothes on and then having to get changed into something else

You want me to post the emails to prove it??
