Currently unable to sleep so thought I would ask others!

I feel like I’ve seen everything that’s regularly recommended but I have a few TV shows I love that rarely ever come up in discussions. I figured I would share mine and maybe others could share theirs and we can all find something new to us!

The main ones that come to mind for me are:
Silicon Valley
Barry
Carnivale
Party Dowb

Almost all HBO so harder to get hold of but all absolutely brilliant and worth seeking out.

Also 30 Rock and The Shield - these come up more often but still not widely seen in the UK

What are yours?

Did I see someone mention the split - I binged that in lockdown 1, apparently there will be a third series! Nicola Walker is brilliant in everything she does, IMHO :o

And I adore Stephen Mangan too. I loved green wing (although not his character)

Medium - my favourite show ever

New Tricks - love it

Everyone has been telling us to watch Call My Agent - tried and just don't get it. I felt the same about This Is US

Watching Unforgotten now and love it.

@MrsCrosbyNRTB

Humans

Hana

They were both so good!! I don’t know anyone who’s watched them.

Also a dubbed from the original German series when I was a child called Silas, about a young boy and his beautiful horse. The intro music was ace!

I used to love Silas!!
SingToTheSky · 24/02/2021 00:29

I am always surprised when people haven’t watched black books, green wing and spaced!

ItsAllAboutTheParsley · 24/02/2021 00:35

Loved Ultraviolet, watched it recently still good/creepy. Jack Davenport and Stephen Meyer were obv 12 when they made it though.

Two Doors Down. Wonderful, painful like W1A

Timeless - on prime and Netflix about history prof and soldier trying to stop Goran Ivanisec changing events in the past. Really good but no one else has watched!

Really, really obscure Scottish one, Terri Macintyre. Comedy about a tanning salon owner, really dark comedy - was on BBC 3 when it first started. One David Tennant was in it, whatever happened to him?

Casanova. Russell T Davies wrote script. Wonderful but no one else has heard of it? Like Bridgerton, fabulous costumes and fair amount of sexy bits.

Lucifer

Scorpion and Ransom, once you get past blokes from Casualty/Holly being sex symbols in America.

Ku'damm 56
Best thing I've seen on tv.

OhWhyNot · 24/02/2021 00:37

Me and DH have watched It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia about 12 times, apart from the later ones which are crap.

Not seen them mentioned but I absolutely loved Midnight, Texas. iZombie, Campus, Trollied, When calls the heart and Virgin River. I don’t really know anyone else that does outside of my house!

Like others I also watch and love Lucifer, Ghosts, Hart of Dixie, Being Human and Green Wing.

Graphista · 24/02/2021 00:43

Great idea for a thread op I'm sick of seeing the same shows repeatedly mentioned/recommended.

I always recommend white collar I don't know anyone else in real life who's seen it but it's a fantastic show, light crime procedural but with quirky supporting cast and a real heart to it, plus Matt bomer is GORGEOUS!

Leverage - I started watching recently, those who remember Hustle might like this a band of con artists work together to gain justice for others using their less than straight up talents.

Also, Medium

Yea I got fed up with only first few seasons being shown on tv and shelled out to buy via Amazon streaming. Well worth it I've watched a few times now. Love the family element and the characters as well as the crime solving aspects.

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar I'd love to hear more about the expanse. One of my favourite but not famous actors ever is in it - Shohreh aghdashloo

She's one of those actors you won't recognise the name but you will very likely have seen her and been impressed by her. Fabulous actor.

But I'm not sure if it's worth trying just cos she's in it? Seems to look like something that requires a lot of concentration which is something I struggle with these days

I don't know why people gave such an aversion to subtitled shows
Speaking personally it's because my eyesight isn't great anyway and even with glasses watching something with subtitles is hard going and I can't manage more than 2 episodes without getting a headache.

Jane the virgin is an old favourite I struggle to watch now, SO many people who know my TASTES have recommended many a scandi drama as they're my sort of thing with longer running plot lines etc, call my agent is on my list, money heist and a few others that are subtitled are on my list but I would need certain conditions to be able to watch them (well rested, good natural light, eyes behaving, head behaving)

@PlasticCupPolitics no offence was very popular on here and generally at the time it was first released. Excellent show, shame it was finished

Flashforward as has been mentioned a couple of times was excellent

There was a similar series called "the nine" (not to be confused with the current British show) About the aftermath of a bank robbery was good too but sadly cancelled after just one season (I fear many really good USA made dramas are "too complicated" for their domestic market and get cancelled whereas we Brits love em!)

A canadian show called "flash point" starring enrico colantonj (he played Elias in "person of interest") which I loved but I'm struggling to find it now. About a SWAT team who use psychology as their main tool. Each episode is a flashback to how the criminal ends up at the point where swat are involved. Not even dvds available so must be a licensing thing

Another one on "star" on Disney I would highly recommend - lie to me! Fabulous show! Cut off in its prime and the "owners" refused to sell to anyone else to make! But still well worth a watch

Some cracking films in the new Disney content too

Timeless - on prime and Netflix about history prof and soldier trying to stop Goran Ivanisec changing events in the past. Really good but no one else has watched!

I HAVE

Fantastic series, love it have watched it so much I almost know the script now, again cut off in its prime but at least they were able to do a finale for it. Some amazing episodes highlighting little known histories mainly civil rights perspective. I think the women's suffrage one is my favourite. I reckon the writers were quantum leap fans (which isn't bloody available anywhere! Now Disney should be on that one! They must have the money for this)

OhWhyNot · 24/02/2021 00:45

Cocolapew I agree the later series are not as good last series I don’t bother watching it al

The D.E.N.N.I.S System, They Gang Buys a Boat, Mac Day were from the best series

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 24/02/2021 00:49

I didnt think I watched a lot of TV but I'd say I've seen at least 75% of the programmes mentioned.

Some of them are strange suggestions for programmes no one has seen, how do you not know anyone who hasn't seen Friday Night Dinner or This is Us for example

Iceskatingfan · 24/02/2021 00:49

I’ve seen so many of he shows on this thread 😂 Clearly I spend too much time watching TV! Totally agree especially with White Collar, Medium and The Split, all brilliant!
I will add:
Crazy Ex Girlfriend
Defending the Guilty
The 3 percent
Travelers
The 4400

areyoumeop · 24/02/2021 00:51

The Highwayman - series about a federal agent who drove a truck that had a helicopter for a cab
The Master - tv show about an american ninja
Logans Run - tv series after the film of the same name
x-files - EVERY episode

PenisBeakerIsMyFavouriteMuppet · 24/02/2021 00:59

Bonus Family.

Gentle Swedish drama about a couple combining their families.

It’s subtitled which I love- I find I pay more attention because I can’t browse on my phone while half-listening.

TurquoiseDragon · 24/02/2021 01:07

King of Blaze (well, it's the nearest translation)

Chinese TV series from around 2017, with subtitles. 1st season 28 episodes, 2nd season 40. Fantasy drama. I enjoyed it a lot.

InglouriousBasterd · 24/02/2021 01:14

Maison Close - it only ran for two seasons but was absolutely brilliant.

InglouriousBasterd · 24/02/2021 01:15

Also The Legacy, a Danish series - absolutely loved it.

Zebracowfish · 24/02/2021 01:22

My main one is the good wife! Every time a friend asks me to recommend something, this is the series I suggest! But no one ever watches it ha!!

And I loved the affair as well!!

NiceGerbil · 24/02/2021 01:26

Erm I have some but they are going back a bit!

The Ritz - 80s, about a night club

Lexx - very odd sci fi late night when I was pissed and young

If anyone remembers those as well I'll be over the moon!

NiceGerbil · 24/02/2021 01:27

X files- everyone has heard of that surely?!

Logan's run was great didn't know there was a series!

NiceGerbil · 24/02/2021 01:29

Ooh

garth marenghi's darkplace

And a kids show called the adventure game Grin

Shall I get my coat?

Ricepops · 24/02/2021 01:31

State of Happiness. And W1A and 2012 as others have said. Also while on the subject of Jessica Hynes, I haven't heard others talk about There She Goes, but that is also a great show.

I didn't like Silicon Valley - none of the characters were very likeable.

Eekay · 24/02/2021 01:34

Sense8
Nobody's ever seen it but I loved it. Two seasons on netflix
