My DF is in jail, I need to go back to my home country, can't I take compassionate leave?

It's for something that happened 20 years ago. He's under quarantine with other inmates under terrible conditions, I'm pretty sure he'll catch COVID and that will be the end of it. I need to go back home for an indefinite length of time, what's the best to handle this with work? (I also had to take time off for my DS in the past 3 weeks which worries me they'll think I'm taking the Mick).

That isn’t what the word scaremongering means Confused are you punting flights to Mexico or something? Talk about overinvested.

I can leave, yes I could potentially get stuck but leaving and coming back , supposing all flights remain as they are , is completely égal/allowed.

Well, yes, you could get stuck or have to quarantine in a hotel for 2 weeks and pay for it. That's a chance you take if you leave. You can't have it both ways just now.

Of course it is, telling the OP it's illegal to leave, she can't leave, what the rules of isolation are in Mexico/she needs to isolate, etc.

You’re the poster who in December was earning £21k and had been offered £60k+ ?

Is the better paid job still available? Can you negotiate to start in the summer then resign from your current job?

IrmaFayLear · 22/02/2021 08:50

The rules are what they are.

What is not a rule though is common sense. Travelling to Mexico with a baby when you know the country has a high incidence of covid and then visiting a covid-riven prison - all for someone who hasn’t even got covid - madness!

As mentioned upthread, the father could get covid today, tomorrow or have contracted it last week and the OP won’t be able to visit him anyway.

Regarding OP’s question about work, they may or may not be flexible depending on OP’s value, but not many companies would welcome an employee wanting “indefinite” leave, especially at the moment. The Op mentions two weeks’ leave: that would be more acceptable, but does that include quarantine this end and also if the df does actually become very ill or sadly die - that two weeks might then become ten....

Fressia123 · 22/02/2021 09:06

Yes, I'm that one @RickiTarr but I doubt that job is still on the table and would never have worked for us as a family. The truth is because I've already asked for flexibility I doubt they'd give me some more. My best hope is to wait until my AL resets in April and then take leave for 3 weeks.

Good luck with it.

Definitely go hunting for a better paid job later down the line though, if you know you can command that kind of money and you have the bilingual fluency you’ll get something better.

Fressia123 · 22/02/2021 09:14

Unfortunately it's all down to location @RickiTarr but I never lose hope. I used to be an outsourcing manager for a very big .com so I know I have the skills and experience.

None of which my post which you specifically replied to saying ‘god, people, stop scaremongering!’ did Hmm I couldn’t give a monkeys if OP goes to Mexico or not. I was just letting her know that her and her employer are identifiable online to all and sundry, since she’s been talking about lying to her employer.

Fressia123 · 22/02/2021 10:15

@MiddleParking your point is truly valid. I'm an utter chicken and wouldn't do it anyways, I thought of it more like an FYI
