I hope he's alright. I suppose at his age it's always a worry. I thought that when he retired a few years ago that he may have health worries, so I wonder if stuff has caught up with him.

I'm quite an emotional person, but when I heard captain Tom died, I burst into tears.

I really won't be moved when Philip goes at all, and I found it interesting how in such a short time captain Tom made those connections... And in years of service Prince Phillips hasn't.

Tom: Fought for country, defeated Nazis, raised millions for charity. Phil: Married the Queen. Bigot.

I'm sure I read something a few weeks ago that said he was suffering from pancreatic cancer.

I really like his bluntness, i wish there were more like him rather than all these uptight pc nazis inflicting their way of thinking on everyone! Yes hes led a pampered life since he was an adult but he had a very difficult childhood and suffered much loss.

wewillmeetagain · 18/02/2021 18:22

@ViciousJackdaw Prince Philip also served during WW2, in the Royal Navy.

But Philip also fought for his country (in the Mediterranean and the far East), so had just as much of a hand in defeating the Nazis? And has spent the rest of his adult life working with and raising the profile of charities?

Not that that takes anything away from Captain Tom, but if those are the markers of a life well lived, Philip has them too!

There are plenty of "blunt" Hmm men like him. They make up the contingent of all the workplace bullies, mad in-laws, arsehole boyfriends and H's and horrid neighbour's who feature daily on Relationships and AIBU.
Laiste · 18/02/2021 18:41

I wouldn't have the first clue about which charities PP supports. I guess he 'works hard behind the scenes'? Or maybe i just don't pay enough attention.

To be fair the media loved Captain Tom. For a few weeks never a day went by without him cropping up on BBC Breakfast. We are all only as well informed as we want to be. We've been fed images and stories to make us feel a certain way lately. Can't say Prince Philip has ever been a darling of the media ...

wewillmeetagain · 18/02/2021 18:48

@PicsInRed well im a blunt female and I wouldn't say im abusive or a bully! I just say it how it is, i have far more respect for people like that as well! Offence is always taken its not given!

ancientgran · 18/02/2021 18:51

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is something he achieved which has been a positive for many young people, I haven't a clue how many but the kids I know who did had a very positive experience.

Any of his criticis done anything comparable?

‘Saying it how it is’ can be cruel, unnecessary and unkind.
It really is nothing to be proud of if you don’t have any emotional intelligence & show no empathy for other people.

customwatkins · 21/02/2021 14:38

I find it sad that people are trying to speculate what's wrong with him and the public feel it's their right to know. Surely his health is private to him and his family?

I felt sorry for Charles, clearly emotional with zoom lenses trained on him while entering the hospital - I'm sure he's used to it but still can't be easy, I remember losing my dad and it was torturous enough in private.

PP was one of my favourite royals, I loved that he was so blunt and had no filter, I think he's driven some forward thinking and modern changes on the royal family - I admire him.

I feel for the family and the queen right now at the end of the day they are just people like us, seeing a loved one poorly is heartbreaking.

CounsellorTroi · 21/02/2021 14:44

If he is at the end of his life, which I obviously hope he isn't then there must be fears about people trying to get to London to gather outside Buckingham Palace or to leave flowers or whatever, which some people will definitely try to do.

I think he was clearly damaged by his childhood, having a distant, mentally ill mother and disinterested father in early childhood isn't great, arriving home one day to find your mother has disappeared not to be heard of for 5 years is also less than ideal. That your father and sisters couldn't care for you and you are then sent to a foreign country to boarding school (I image boarding schools in the 1930 were probably tough) and then straight into a war as a teenager to finish it off. I don't think it is a recipe any childcare expert would recommend.

He was tough, he was a survivor but there was bound to be a price to be paid.

BettysButtons · 21/02/2021 14:54

I agree ancient
I can almost excuse PP for being such an unpleasant rude, unkind, blunt apathetic bore. He is a product (victim) of his upbringing, position in society and privilege.

Without a doubt. He is a human being with family and friends. The fact that I (and others) don’t think much of him is totally irrelevant when he is nearing the end of his life.

I thought he improved significantly in Seasons 3 & 4 of The Crown.

Haha!!! I actually preferred him in S1&2!! 😂

ancientgran · 21/02/2021 15:06

I've never seen The Crown. I've heard very mixed things about it.

GCAcademic · 21/02/2021 15:09

You should try it ancientgran. I was sceptical but enjoyed it (though not Olivia Colman's portrayal of HMQ, and once it got into a period I could actually remember clearly, I lost interest).

S1&2 are a just really good period Drama. S3&4 are really the equivalent to bad on-a-shoestring ‘royal’ films. Anyone seen ‘Diana’ or ‘William &Kate’ - absolutely abysmal!
BettysButtons · 21/02/2021 15:10

Bad grammar above but I hope you get what I’m trying to say!!

CheltenhamLady · 21/02/2021 15:26

Would Prince Charles have visited from 100 miles away if he wasn't seriously ill? Or would he just think 'sod the lockdown' I am off to see Dad?

FoxyTheFox · 21/02/2021 15:31

it's the fact that the average member of the public can't even expect a bare minimum of medical care atm.

This isn't my experience either. I've had surgery during lockdown, as have two family members, and DC routine paediatric appointments have carried on as normal too.
