@soddingkitten
Kumpir is baked potato with different toppings and areas growing potatoes have open fire varieties of Backkartoffeln.
One problem is that us ordinary customers usually don't get potatoes thar are big enough. They are sold to the food industry. There are articles on that topics and housewifely laments by DH.

sueelleker · 19/03/2021 08:20

I'm giving blood this afternoon. This may be mildly exciting, as I'm going to ask them to take it from my right arm. I've been donating from my left arm for over 100 sessions, and the vein has tissued; last time was really painful.

HelenaJustina · 19/03/2021 10:30

It is our school/parish patronal feast day today, the whole school attended a live streamed Mass and the head has laid on fruit and pastries for staff. I know this isn’t in the spirit of the thread but it’s made my Friday!

Frownette · 19/03/2021 10:51

Lots of delicious sounding things.

I'd love a lobster roll and fries, followed by fruit and pastries

Spudlet · 19/03/2021 11:36

My bike needs a new front shifter, but happily the man in the shop had a secondhand one so he’s putting that on. Not sure how much this is all going to come to in the end 😬 Waiting for the text to go and collect it.

As a result we walked to school this morning - well, DS alternated between riding his bike and walking over the bits that were too muddy for him to make headway. It’s just over 1.5 miles and we got there in 40 minutes which I thought was pretty good. Then DH carried the bike home the direct way, and I went for a little run a slightly longer way home. DS had muddy trousers when he got to school but fortunately they don’t mind - he had his wellies on but the pedal got muddy and he kept brushing against it 🙄

Spent the morning in the phone to the gp to try and get an appointment, was just given stronger pain killers (I’m waiting for surgery which is delayed due to covid), took pain killers, planted a few vegetable seeds and cleaned out the fridge ready for food delivery tomorrow.

Dd text me from school saying she doesn’t need picking up early as she’s going into town with her friend to get chips from the chip shop. Not sure she’s actually meant to be doing this though her friend is in her school bubble. I feel kind of jealous because I would love to sit on a park bench and eat chips with a friend 🤣.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 19/03/2021 11:48

@HelenaJustina - That is lovely!
DS's school celebrates in September (Patronatsfest).

I spent an hour working today, to help my collegue out. But it wasn't a good idea foot-wise and DD gave me a lecture (las mir die Leviten) on being sensible.

Spudlet · 19/03/2021 12:35

Just completed and sent off DS’s EHCP form. Feeling a bit sad now. I know it was important not to put a positive spin on things and to fill it in from the point of view of things at their worst, but it felt awful to do it, like I was sending it off for DS to be judged or something I suppose. I keep imagining someone who doesn’t know DS reading it and forming this awful picture of him. Sad

I’ll pull myself together in a minute and stop making a fuss, it’s just hard when you have to confront these things.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 19/03/2021 12:54

@spudlet
I am sure those reading it know that you have to present the worst case scenario to get the best of help. They are all working within the same system after all.

MissConductUS · 19/03/2021 13:26

Welcome, @Lovemusic33, and thanks for sharing your news. What were the new pain meds you were given? I hope you get your surgery soon. I'm probably going to get an elective surgery this summer.

Spudlet, I went through the same thing with my DS when we were getting extra help for his language delay. He's doing brilliantly now and is a lovely young man. The challenges we face as children do not define us.

I don't know if you can get it in the UK, but this is my favorite potato :

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yukon_Gold_potato

The golden flesh is beautiful and they make amazing mashed potatoes, especially if you add sour cream and cream cheese. Grin

There is a site dedicated to potatoes, especially old and now rare kinds that do not lend themselves to industrialized production.
I am tempted to order a taster paket ...

Nydj · 19/03/2021 14:02

Absolutely love the discourse on potatoes.

Miss, I don’t think supermarkets here sell Yukon gold - but you can get seed potatoes to grow yourself. I remember way back when they first started advertising them on vegetable seed supplier brochures - it was very tempting as we had an allotment but I am too tight they were too expensive.

I have yet to find a potato based dish that I dislike.

Sunbird24 · 19/03/2021 14:14

I’ve definitely had Yukon gold potatoes over here (UK), but no idea where from, sorry!

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 19/03/2021 14:16

Nydj Do you have a favourite?

Last summer I tried to grow potatoes "The Martian" style - got a harvest of 5 kg.

HildaTablet · 19/03/2021 15:41

The continued potato talk is reminding me that I have some pink fir apple seed potatoes 'chitting' - must remember to actually plant them at some point. It's too cold at the moment.

I grow them in sacks and usually get a decent crop. Can't do them in the ground any more as I can't dig properly (shoulder problems).

soddingkitten · 19/03/2021 15:51

This potato gene bank in Peru was featured on Zach Efron’s globe-trotting “environmental” Hmm series on Netflix: cipotato.org/genebankcip/potato-cultivated/ They have a vast bank of varieties stored there for posterity. They absolutely should not let any of us in there with a camping stove, butter or cream. Grin

EggyPegg · 19/03/2021 16:39

This potato chat is very soothing. I'm a mash or jacket girl myself. It's blasphemy to admit as a Brit, but I don't really like roast potatoes. Or waffles. It's something about the crispy outer and fluffy inner that puts my teeth on edge.

After procrastinating splendidly all week, I submitted another assignment last night. I'm taking today off and will commence work on the one due on April 1st tomorrow. I have decided to drop back down to one module a year (part time study) next year as this year has been relentless.

Hooray for everyone's heating working.

@Spudlet, he won't be judged and it's such a positive thing to give him the support he needs. It

Oh and I missed an important meeting this week as the first notification I had that it was happening was an email invitation to Zoom that was sent at 1551 for the meeting to start at 1900. I didn't see the email until 2030 so emailed the head of the organisation to apologise for missing it and to explain why. He was annoyed on my behalf.

Sunbird24 · 19/03/2021 16:49

I’ve realised I forgot to set my out of office on my work email before I left last Friday and I r been on leave all week. Oops!

I couldn’t really taste any difference between potatoes a grown on the allotment and the ones bought from the supermarket. Luckily, I no longer have an allotment as I’d definitely get thrown out for such heresy! The only potatoes I thought worth growing were ones that we couldn’t easily get in the supermarkets back when we had the allotment - like the pink fir ones that @HildaTablet mentioned.

A couple weeks ago I posted about DS doing an electric guitar rendition of "In the hall of the mountain king". His version did indeed have several of his marvellous electric effects pedals and was (to me at least) pretty good.

DS mentioned today that the teacher in charge had actually been expecting a classic guitar, and had said that she would use his video "where appropriate". I'm strangely proud Grin

I stopped at the end of the driveway as I was coming home from work to get the mail out of the mailbox. Nothing, nada, zero. Was our letter carrier kidnapped? Abducted by aliens perhaps?

There are days when we just don't get any mail, but they are very, very rare.

Good morning, bright and sunny but cold here.

DH is off to the BAUHAUS (the DIY shop not the insitute) to try and get the right kind of wheels.
I can - slightly - move my toes.

EggyPegg · 20/03/2021 09:18

@Champagneforeveryone, good on DS for producing something original.

Good to hear about the toes Prok!

Overcast but dry in Wiltshire today. DS1 wants to go to the park to play football with DH later so that's our plan.

In the meantime I need to go to Pets at Home to return a cat bed that EggyCat1 wouldn't even look at and buy some more fancy food.
