sodding I love potatoes - does it show Grin

Sunbird24 · 18/03/2021 16:41

Plumber’s been, apparently it was just a bit that was blocked so all he did was unscrew it, rinse it out in the bathroom sink and put it back. Hopefully should be warm again soon! He didn’t wear any hi-viz...

Champagneforeveryone · 18/03/2021 16:52

Apparently we now have lateral flow testing at work. It's in a bus in the car park, which adds a frisson of excitement to the situation.

Sunbird24 · 18/03/2021 17:22

I take it back, it’s gone again. 🤬🥶

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 18/03/2021 17:32

Sunbird Oh no!!

Sunbird24 · 18/03/2021 17:54

I have managed to have a shower though so that’s something...

sueelleker · 18/03/2021 17:55

@soddingkitten

Bratkartoffeln = pre boiled potatoes usually left overs fried in a pan with smoked ham and onions

I buy the long life ambient foil packs of this for emergencies (days when I can’t be bothered to cook). They featured in my Brexit stockpile too. 😄

I keep those as well'also foil packs of rosti. I like the rosti pan-fried with beaten egg stirred through it.
Prokupatuscrakedatus · 18/03/2021 18:28

Rösti is sth entirely different but equally lovely - I forgot about them!
and of course Reibekuchen

Sunbird24 · 18/03/2021 18:34

I do love Rösti

Holothane · 18/03/2021 19:12

Vaccine today feel a bit sick but glad first one is done.

MissConductUS · 18/03/2021 19:16

I just had a google on rosti, as I have never heard of them. They look like what we call hash browns. Which are usually a breakfast item and very tasty when done well.

@Holothane, well done. It will pass in two days or so. Which one did you get?

Plumber came back, still no hi-viz, found another bit that was blocked, and it seems to have done the trick 🤞🤫
Might be able to sleep in my own bed tonight, though I’ve got an ultrasound tomorrow lunchtime so don’t know how much sleep I’ll actually get!

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 18/03/2021 19:31

Hash browns - what kind of potatoe-y goodness have i missed [off to google] - tasty!!!!
On a scale of 'humidity' I'd say - Reibekuchen - Rösti - Hash Browns

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 18/03/2021 20:11

I do not mean humidity, do I?

HildaTablet · 18/03/2021 20:12

I hope the heating's still on, Sunbird 🤞

My contribution to the potato debate is something we used to have as children called 'floddies' - a kind of fried potato cake not unlike a rösti. They're a traditional Northern (UK) delicacy, though. And of course let's not forget bubble and squeak

DH and I have both had our first vaccines. Pfizer for him and AZ for me.

MissConductUS · 18/03/2021 20:16

@Prokupatuscrakedatus

Very close. "Moisture" was the correct word. Humidity only refers to the water vapor in the air. Hash browns come out best if you get as much water out of the grated potatoes as possible. I do this by cutting them very small and pressing them between two sheets of paper towels kitchen roll. This lets them brown in the pan better.

I have been slightly worried about a bulge in brick wall of garden on our route to school. Yesterday I saw neighbours laboriously chopping down ivy on it. Today they had taken down the wall itself were removing monstrous ivy trunk and were rebuilding the concrete block wall. We can scoot past in safety :-)

Champagneforeveryone · 18/03/2021 20:30

We had homemade rosti for dinner. They were very good

Squirrel26 · 18/03/2021 20:45

I had lunch at my bubble buddy’s house the other week and we had home made rosti. We had a discussion about how rosti differ from hash browns, and decided that it might be that hash browns are deep fried, whereas rosti are briefly fried in a pan and then finished off in the oven.

Could be wrong though, I am not a potato expert, even though I’m very diligent about potato product research. Grin

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 18/03/2021 21:12

Moisture!!! Grin

My DM had a cook book about potatoe dishes around the world.
I wonder where it has got to.

I made bulgur salad for DH, now my foot feels sore.

DoctorTwo · 18/03/2021 22:36

I have spent most of the evening watching Sabine Schmitz ragging various vehicles around the Nurburgring. She really was the Queen of the Nordschleife. About to have a cup of tea before hitting my scratcher.

soddingkitten · 18/03/2021 23:15

My favourite potato dish is dauphinoise potatoes - very thinly sliced, garlic, S&P, double cream and knobs of butter, baked in the oven. Rare treat, for obvious reasons.

Is it just us Brits (and maybe the Irish) that bake potatoes? I love baked/jacket potatoes but I get the sense that we might be out on a limb with this. Are they too unsophisticated for our European neighbours?

MissConductUS · 18/03/2021 23:55

We bake potatoes in the US too. Typically served with a good steak. Mashed or fried is more common though.

Not the Oxford one watched Dr who then brought a 8 Masters story from big finish so in love with Eric Roberts voice, feeling a bit better.

OrdinaryLife · 19/03/2021 06:44

Love the potato chat Grin after suffering a torturous fortnight of whining from ordinary cat wanting to go out (we moved house) we let her this morning as thought the conditions were perfect... its wet and she hasn't had breakfast. Oh no, she's managed to squeeze her fat furriness through a tiny gap into next door's garden. DH is alternately cajoling, cursing and shaking the cat crunchies box.
