@Littlegirlplustwo Royals have done interviews with talk show hosts before. Them going to Oprah is no different.

What I don’t understand is hiding behind charity when really they’re just out to make money.

I don't see any evidence of that at all. Where is your proof of this? Apart from the fact they are like all royals who have charities and who make money?

as it’s just really sad for Harry and the children not knowing their cousins

Why do you assume Harry and his children won't know their cousins? That they don't already, right now - Facetime/communicate etc etc etc? You make a lot of assumptions. Harry also is his own person and knows the media as well as, perhaps even better, than Meghan does. Of course though, it is always 'poor Harry', 'I feel sorry/sad for Harry', as if he is the innocent one and Meghan is the evil one. Sexism and Misogyny.

MissEliza · 16/02/2021 12:04

I bet Oprah is rubbing her hands in glee. I haven't seen on her on the TV for ages but I recall she's a great interviewer. There's no way she's going to walk away from that interview without getting some juicy gossip. This really will burn bridges with the RF, particularly William.

minou123 · 16/02/2021 12:17

I hope they can make up with the RF privately, as it’s just really sad for Harry and the children not knowing their cousins.

I have 35 cousins. My entire childhood 80s to 00, I lived in another country from them.

In fact, I was in different continent to them. And, gets this, there was no Internet and I only saw them once a year.

I have a wonderful, brilliant relationship with all 35 cousins. I know all of them.

You don't have to live next door, next street or even in the same country to be friends with your cousins.

I thought I heard this morning that the interview was already in the can so to speak.
I don't blame them for going to Oprah for it either.

solicitoring · 16/02/2021 12:46

Nice for them.

SageandBlackPepper · 16/02/2021 13:20

Oprah has the friendly fire side chat persona but in reality she is as tough as they come. She is not going to allow 90 minutes of fluff about philanthropy, favourite poems, rescuing dogs and raising children. She is going to want the inside story.

I think it is a mistake for them to be honest. I hope it is massive pay day as the more of these type of interviews they do the less interesting they become (unless they do a Diana and really spill the beans).

I think they are in a difficult spot as all they really have to sell is their story. They are not film stars who can move on to the next multi-milllion dollar film. They are not 'experts' in any field really. The further the space between them and the Royal family the less interest there will be I think, only notoriety.

But also she is intelligent enough to know that all questions will have been approved previously, and as it's not live it can be edited any way H&M wish before it goes to air, which I think is fair.

the80sweregreat · 16/02/2021 13:40

Who are they really? Meghan could at least go and earn a living if it did ever go ' tits up' , even if it's a cameo or bit part in a movie or voiceover. She has many options open to her.
Harry .. not sure. He was brought up to do Royal things and must feel a bit strange at this new life.
If he starts on his family in this interview they won't have him back again. The Royal brand has been damaged enough by Charles and Diana bearing all in interviews etc over the years and I doubt they will forgive him , plus he isn't even important now William and Kate have had three children. He really is a nobody as regards the crown and his line in the queue for the ' top jobs' to be honest.
My take on it is she just didn't like his family. It happens. She didn't really understand Royal protocol and felt trapped by it all.
I don't know what they will say or if it'll be explosive. I think they might ' hint' at things but not the whole story : hedge their bets , if Oprah lets them get away with doing that. Or they will just blame the press for all of it.

SleepingStandingUp · 16/02/2021 13:45

@Becles

Actually didn't Zara announce her pregnancy less than 2 weeks after Meghan spoke about her miscarriage? If we're going to be suggesting waiting to share news...
So how long is appropriate? And it wasn't her was it, wasn't it Mike and what doesn't sound like a particularly planned announcement rather an excited Dad moment? How long between each "thing" must we leave it? What happens of Zara and Meghan give birth on the same date? Who has to not announce it?

I mean we're assuming Zara did phone Meghan up personally to brag about her pregnancy, she's has pregnancy losses herself so I'm sure she felt for them, but surely in anyone elses family its just a succession of news, not one-upmanship

Roussette · 16/02/2021 14:00

SleepingStandingUp Totally agree.
Which is why I find the 'god MM can't help it, she just has to steal Eugenie's limelight' posts very weird.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 16/02/2021 14:09

Looks fairly far along in that photo which makes sense them announcing later if she had a miscarriage.
Good luck to them unfortunately due to who they are they will never have complete privacy .

rosetylersbiggun · 16/02/2021 14:59

This is really what the rest of the royals do. Major stars manage it. If you look at someone like Julia Roberts, they are barely in the press and if they are they never respond to it. Nicole Kidman is another example.

They really don't know. There are loads of other royals who have done a thousand times more scandalous things, including serious and illegal things; the British press just covers up or conveniently forgets. Objectively Harry and Meghan 'sell out' far less than other royals, and certainly plenty of royals do TV documentaries, give interviews, create social media personas (hire social media managers and buy social media followers), and sell out in order to promote their personal images and increase their personal celebrity and make money. The idea it's all noblesse oblige and with the intention of sharing and educating us peons is laughable.

Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman are weird examples. In their heyday they were followed around constantly by paps, had endless scrutiny on their love lives, and basically couldn't breath without it being front page news. The only reason they're not in the press now is because both women are in their 50s (which is 120 in Hollywood years) and the media and particularly tabloids are not interested in older women.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 16/02/2021 20:12

Sorry but a heavily posed photo to announce your pregnancy is a dick move. Celebrity or non celebrity. Who the heck cares apart from friends and family.

....ok, guessing they are part of “ we’re famous, you should care”.

Roussette · 16/02/2021 20:17

Yeah... crime of the century, a posed photo Hmm

I imagine quite a few people care given H is part of the RF.

Fuhfeuucdr · 16/02/2021 20:25

Photographers hired for walks through war graves, poised pregnancy announcements and...an interview with Oprah.

And yet they are such ordinary private people, bless them.

Sparklingbrook · 16/02/2021 20:29

The people that claim to not care have more to say for themselves than the people that actually do!
stairway · 16/02/2021 20:30

A posed photo clearly isn’t the crime of the century. However not everyone is going to like it though and it’s hard to avoid seeing it. Plenty of people see it as beautiful and romantic and others will see it as a bit cringey. I’m sure they don’t mind people having different opinions. I suspect with them the only thing worse than being talked about is not to be talked about.

Sparklingbrook · 16/02/2021 20:32

How is it hard to avoid seeing? I had to go looking for it.

Cheesypasta · 16/02/2021 20:36

as it's not live it can be edited any way H&M wish before it goes to air, which I think is fair.

This is assuming they get to call the shots over the final edit. If Oprah and CBS agree to that, it's all good for the Sussexes, but what if they don't? I'm not sure who wants this more and who would be willing to walk away if they can't get the final say.

I don't think they would have done it if they didn't TBH. I am sure they reached a compromise somehow even if Oprah was making demands.

@Thewinterofdiscontent How is it a 'dick move'? They've done nothing wrong! It doesn't even look posed, it looks like a casual moment at a park, it looks sweet. You'd have to have serious issues or have a very miserable life to see this as a 'dick move' rather than a random and touching moment.

And if you didn't care, you wouldn't have opened this thread and commented. Maybe have a look inwards.

Motherdare · 17/02/2021 02:42

The photo is cringe worthy because it’s full of artifice, so styled and full of hints at what they want people to think of them. Completely unnatural. This is what people don’t like another them. Every gesture seems false and vainglorious.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 17/02/2021 02:59

Cokie3 Why send a “random touching moment” to the worlds public though? Surely that’s saying look at our personal lives which is exactly what they complained about before.

I don’t care about them and don’t give them a second thought normally. However every time something about them gets reported (it’s always stuff they put out) I remember how annoying they are. Hence commenting.

I would love it if they were never heard of again.

DeRigueurMortis · 17/02/2021 02:59

They are building a marketable brand.

That's fine. I've no issue at all with them living as they please.

What I do object to is the hypocrisy.

The platform and thus "marketability" they have is because of H's family.

They have nothing more than that to offer.

Yet they shamelessly demand privacy whilst doing the utmost to ensure it's invaded through numerous mechanisms designed to further their wealth.

I wish them no ill will. I just wish they'd stop being hypocritical.

If they are striving to be a "power couple" then fine - own it. I get it.

It's a damn sight more attractive a proposition than being second fiddle, opening the village fete compared to W&C doing premieres etc.

GingerScallop · 17/02/2021 03:13

@Becles, I believe Zara's announcement was weeks before Meghan's article. Besides, what's the appropriate time? I've had two miscarriages but wouldn't expect other pregnant mums to withhold their announcements because of that.
@Motherdare and others, I thought it was a beautiful pic of two people very much in love and very happy. Posed yes (a bit curious it was taken remotely What was the mechanics involved) but beautiful.

I think their mistakes are no bigger than those of other celebrities. And yes they are also marketing a brand. Doesn't make them evil. So far, their business is doing very well indeed
