I don’t think I’ll ever hear of a baby Gary.

I know two adult Gary’s and both are in their 50’s now

Deirdre

It's funny how two Irish names have been mentioned -Kevin and Deirdre.
They appear to have a different connotation ( I'm not sure that is the correct word for what I mean ) in Britain than in Ireland.
Here, in Ireland Kevin and Deirdre are perfectly ordinary, nice names.

Deirdre ( pronounced Deerdra ) would be similar to Orla, Niamh etc
Is it the Deirdreee Barlow connection ?
Kevin would be similar to Brendan, Domhnal etc

Amanda, Paul. Those names were popular but you don’t hear them now so much.

OhWhyNot · 13/02/2021 12:01

I know of two young Amanda’s

Their parents are from Scandinavia and Romania not sure if the name is popular there or they just like the name

Queenie
Reginald (Reggie)
Winifred (Winnie) etc
are all alive and well in the Caribbean communities. We considered Winifred too.

Ethel
Doris
Florence etc are all very much used in African communities.

It says here that Louise is popular for boys and girls in France. Is that right? I thought Louis for boys.

What names do you think will never be revived?
Delatron · 13/02/2021 12:57

Ooh I like Rosalind.

Marianne has definitely come back, I know a few..

LOL - definitely a mis-print for Louis. Louise is the feminisation of Louis - like Pauline and Paul
Misericordia · 13/02/2021 13:01

Thanks Miss Lucy. The writers even made a point of writing in the text below that Louise was popular for both sexes Grin

Now you're making me wonder if I'm out of touch and, while I have been lurking in the UK, France has fully embraced gender neutrality.

Misericordia · 13/02/2021 13:13

Any French people or people living in France can confirm?

Sheila. Can't see that one coming back. Or Brian, although I am in my forties and there was a Brian in my school year along with the Matthews, Pauls, Darrens, etc.

Ifigotherewillbedouble · 13/02/2021 13:43

Victoria Coren Mitchell and David Mitchell’s wee girl is called Barbara.

Tzimi · 13/02/2021 14:06

@MagicSummer Really, is St John a first name? I once knew someone who had that surname, but never heard of it as a given name.

SionnachRua · 13/02/2021 14:09

Deirdre ( pronounced Deerdra ) would be similar to Orla, Niamh etc

Would it? I would think of Deirdre as being a middle aged woman's name - I don't mean this to be offensive but it's in the same bracket as Carol, Bríd or Julie for me. Orla and Niamh aren't dated imo.

Can't stand the English pronunciation of Deirdre though. Deer-dra is much prettier.

ginghamtablecloths · 13/02/2021 14:09

I can't imagine Ethel and Gladys coming back but you never know.
