I don’t think I’ll ever hear of a baby Gary.

I know two adult Gary’s and both are in their 50’s now

@ginghamtablecloths

I can't imagine Ethel and Gladys coming back but you never know.
They have. And Olive.
Bargebill19 · 13/02/2021 14:37

Herbert.

MagicSummer · 13/02/2021 14:38

@Tzimi - yes it can be a first name. I think it's fab! Can't think of an example at the moment though!

@Bargebill19

Herbert.
My brother & SIL have just named my nephew this, as a middle name though.
Bargebill19 · 13/02/2021 14:45

@Doublechins

Fantastic and congratulations!

I’ve always thought it’s a lovely name, sadly not heard/known a Herbert for 40 years. Well overdue.

@MagicSummer Really, is St John a first name? I once knew someone who had that surname, but never heard of it as a given name.

There is a character with that name in 'Jane Eyre'. Never come across it in person, or in connection with anyone in the last 150 years, however. Though there was the politician called Norman StJohn Stevas, but I think that was the first half of his double-barrelled surname, not a middle name.

x2boys · 13/02/2021 15:08

I used to go school with a St John it's pronounced Sin Jen

rc22 · 13/02/2021 15:09

St John is my cousin's middle name. He's in his fifties.

x2boys · 13/02/2021 15:11

Yes the St John I went to school with will be 46/47 now

HideTanner · 13/02/2021 15:13

St. John is just the most formal name I can imagine giving a child. I picture someone so austere and pious, must be the St. John Rivers connection. A millstone of a name I'd say.

Pyewhacket · 13/02/2021 15:14

Cedric
Mansfield
Arthur
Margot

HideTanner · 13/02/2021 15:17

@Pyewhacket

Cedric Mansfield Arthur Margot
Arthur is the 3rd most popular boys' name. Or something like that. And Margots are everywhere!

Haven't heard of any little Cedrics I'll grant you. And never met a person called Mansfield.

x2boys · 13/02/2021 15:18

I also went to school with an Hermione ,this was in the late 70,s early 80,s long before Harry potter .

Pyewhacket · 13/02/2021 15:18

Pyewhacket · 13/02/2021 15:19

Never met anybody called Arthur or Margot

biibbiibobby · 13/02/2021 15:20

@MotherWol I know two hildas... both younger than me and I'm in my 30's

I also know a 5 yr old called Kevin.

Pyewhacket · 13/02/2021 15:22

My father is called Mansfield , shortened to Mani. He’s a Wall Street Banker, and I don’t mean rhyming slang .

Pyewhacket · 13/02/2021 15:26

My sister is called Gaye , don’t know many with that handle .

wellthatsunusual · 13/02/2021 15:27

My mother is almost 90. She said that as a teenager, she desperately wanted to be called Margaret because that's what the fashionable girls were called. Whereas her best friend was called Emma, and they all felt sorry for her because she had such an old fashioned dreary name. Grin

Karen, I just don't see a baby called Karen anymore

MatildaStoker · 13/02/2021 15:34

There’s thousands of little Arthur’s out there. It’s shot up in popularity over the last decade or so.
It was the 4th most popular boys name in England and Wales in 2019.

Gilly12345 · 13/02/2021 15:39
