What names do you think will never be revived?

I don’t think I’ll ever hear of a baby Gary.

I know two adult Gary’s and both are in their 50’s now

Yeah me too Libraryghost plus there used to be a column in the daily mail I think ? Slagging off Sharon's and Tracey's .

redandwhite1 · 13/02/2021 00:30

Ethel!

Mummaofboys93 · 13/02/2021 00:31

I had a one or two Gary's in my year at school, they'd be 27/28 now. I could not imagine a little baby Gary now though tbh. I know someone who had a baby girl middle of last year & she called her Ethel which I think is a very old fashioned name. I have a friend who named her daughter Eleanor she's 2 now & I think it really suits her but at the time I remember thinking it sounded old fashioned but it's definitely grown on me!

I'd never say never about any name as alot that have been mentioned here I have definitely heard in my sons school.

Everyone thinks if you are called Sharon you are dead common, the sort of person who eats crisps in bed while scrolling on an I phone... ooops just described myself there..
Libraryghost · 13/02/2021 00:40

Patricia. Every other Mum was called Pat when I was growing up. Sandra and Carol I associate with 50 plus..
My great nan’s were called Naomi and Hannah - both quite modern compared to my mum who is a Lynne.

I blame ViZ and the 2 fat slags Sharon and Tracey for wrecking it

Sharon and Tracey were unfashionable and seen to be down-market names in the UK long before before Viz came around.

I know several women called Sharon, fewer called Tracy as it happens, and none of them are like the 'common, loud, unrefined, ill educated' stereotype at all.

Tzimi · 13/02/2021 06:19

Garfield! You never hear that name anymore!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/02/2021 06:33

One I read in a book last night - Algernon!

groundcontroltomontydon · 13/02/2021 07:01

I'm amazed to trawl through 23 pages of names and not find mine
Mine put in an appearance early doors. I used to think it was the one area where my parents didn't screw up. Then MN educated me.
Tracy brings to mind both Grace Kelly in High Society and my lovely schoolfriend.

My great grandmothers were Elsie, Kate, Florence and Susannah. All names that people might consider for their babies today but, with the exception of Kate, seemed like really boring, dated names to me when I was young. Kate would probably be the least popular option there now but there were quite a few Kates/Katies at school with me. I don't think you can count any names out for the future.

KeeefBurtain · 13/02/2021 07:18

The fat slags in Viz were Tracey and Sandra, not Sharon.

JenWilson19 · 13/02/2021 07:21

I work in maternity. A lot of the ‘really old’ names people are mentioning on this thread (Enid, Gertrude, Elsie, Mavis, Derek, Fred, Arthur etc) are all extremely popular.

Even some of the names from more like the 50s and 60s (Valarie, Margaret, Christine, Alan, Frank, Robert) are either still popular or making a comeback. Not all though, haven’t seen a Carol or a Linda for example.

It’s more the really popular names from the 70s, 80s and early 90s that you just don’t hear any more eg Donna, Sharon, Tracey, Debbie, Rachel, Samantha, Gemma. Lee, Nicholas, Anthony, Richard, Craig. Not seen any of those in a while shy of maybe middle names.

I really like 60s names and think they’re ripe for a full comeback... Claire, Alison, Louise, Richard, Sarah, Susannah, Stephen. Anyone know any little ones with these names? I do know a little Alison, she’s gorgeous.

Lifechange2020 · 13/02/2021 08:17

I few people have said Jeff/Geoff, I’ve got a little one called Jeff and I love it! Smile

BarbaraofSeville · 13/02/2021 08:37

Isn't the trigger for names coming back generally them being deceased grandparents names?

So as people live longer, it might take longer for the names to come round again.

pebbles8811 · 13/02/2021 09:11

I have a Garry who is 8 he’s named after his dad Gary but I’m sure he’s the only Garry at his school, I also have a Wynter and 2 nephews named Angus & Ivor. I think names are disappearing and coming back again when in the verge of extinction.

Misericordia · 13/02/2021 09:14

I think biblical names and saint names that people have mentioned that have been around for centuries/millennia have stood the test of time and will always come back

tigerlilly22 · 13/02/2021 09:18

My friend in work (Gary aged 34) him and his wife are expecting in April and are calling him Gary. I thought he was joking but he isn't haha.

My friends daughter has just named her little girl ‘Edie”. Haven’t heard that one for a long time.

MirandaWestsNewBFF · 13/02/2021 10:00

There’s been a trend for polysyllabic, very feminine sounding names recently - like, for example, Amelia, Isabella. Once fashions move on I can see a reaction against them which will result in short, unfussy names coming back - Jane, Jean, Claire.
