I don’t think I’ll ever hear of a baby Gary.

I know two adult Gary’s and both are in their 50’s now

At the moment, the popular names are the ones that were also popular when my grandparents were born in the 1910s - George, Harry, Maisie etc. If we reckon that the name popularity cycle takes about 100 years, the next lot to be revived should be the names of my parents' generation - Pat, Sue, John, Annabel.

I guess names like Grace, Molly and Emily were originally trendy old lady names for babies, but once they became mainstream people look for new old men and lady names

WW1 war graves have some names that are popular for boys now. Harry, Alfie etc

Nora seems to have come back into fashion

@ChilliChaos Smile I like that way of spelling of it too.
@Clayder That's interesting to know. Thankyou. It's definitely not been seen as a sophisticated name for a long time lol. Ruby is a beautiful name.
@Caspianberg your list of girls names are so lovely, especially Joy,Nora,Pearl and Winnie.

@TurquoiseDragon

I have just remembered I have a Zillah in my family tree. Apparently named after her mother, who was a Priscilla, known as Cilla.
Zillah is actually a Biblical name.

I think it is quite a cool name, but pretty unusual.

I know an old lady called Zillah, she is lovely, but very down to earth and 'ordinary' and has spent her whole life being embarrased by her 'weird' name

@steppemum I know Zillah is biblical, we just have family history that in this case it came from Cilla.

I worked with a woman who mentioned her boyfriend was called Adolf. I said, sorry, did you say your boyfriend is called Adolf and she glared at me and said, 'yes' like it was a completely normal acceptable name and how dare I question it! I would have dropped that name like a flaming brick. On reflection, he may have come from a long line of proud Neo Nazis so there is that........

midsomermurderess · 15/02/2021 16:35

A lot of these seem very English centric. I think Murray would be regarded as unexceptional in Scotland or NI.

IrishNinja · 15/02/2021 18:59

Well I think you're all being very unreasonable. Don't you know parents put so much thought into how they name children. And that there are countless Tracy's and Sharon's et al reading this and feeling shit? You should never judge someone by their name!

Unless their name is Carl.

Carl is a serial killers name Grin

I took my GS to a baby gym class and two of the children were called Thor and Odin. I never thought I'd meet a Thor or an Odin.

It's funny as I was just reading another current thread where the poster who wrote Murray was complaining about Mumsnet being English centric and now you've said something she wrote is English centric. Grin
