I don’t think I’ll ever hear of a baby Gary.

I know two adult Gary’s and both are in their 50’s now

I don't know whether to be chuffed or indignant that no one posted my name! I've been told it's High Eighties.

That said, yeah, pretty much everything will come back, but maybe not to the UK right away:

  1. Alan, Colin, Graham, Iain, Jamie, Lorna, Margaret, Marian, Mary are all still normal in Scotland.
  2. Julie, Raymond, Vincent are normal in France.
  3. I met a Gaylord in Nigeria a few years ago; he was maybe 21? Also met teenage Dorcas and Sharon.
  4. I know a bunch of young (under 30) Karens (but I am in a country where it's traditional). No one cares that "angry arsey people" are yelling Karen on English Twatter.
  5. I like Gladys; it means swordswoman. Even the flower gladiola is so called because the flowers look like little swords. But I'm not sure I love the sound.
  6. Daphne, June, Lucy, Mabel, Miranda are very popular in general.
  7. I love Bertram, Brendan, Gloria, Lionel, Quentin, Susannah.

My grandma was a Doris, and would have been over 100 now, it’s definitely not one of the old lady names I’ve seen making a comeback (I do know of a Mabel and an Elsie though).
I’m an 80’s baby and knew several boys called Gary / Kevin / Graham, but would be very surprised to hear a baby called any of those now.

@Soubriquet

My great nan wanted my mum to name me Fanny....my maiden name was Hare Hmm
Fanny hare(hair) !!! You would’ve been bullied by the school children.

Fanny Cox and Fanny Beaver had me snorting like a naughty kid at the back of the classroom. But Fanny is still quite a common name in France (I.e. the actress Fanny Ardant), sometimes as a diminutive of Francoise, sometimes as a name in its own right. I can't see it making a comeback in the UK.

Connie (Constance) I've always thought quite nice. Ditto Mabel.

My grannies were Doris (she herself hated it; I can't because I adored my granny and was a fan of Doris Day) and Ada, which I like. 3 of my great grannies were Ivy, Sarah and Edith and I love them all (Edie calling to mind the beautiful, stylish Edie Sedgwick).

For some reason Julian and Simon both appeal to me too even though neither is currently popular. I've known at least 3 lovely men named Malcolm which has prejudiced me in favour of a name I probably otherwise wouldn't have liked. Similarly I've never met a Jenny I disliked (or an Ann I've liked). It sticks.

But Darren! Kinell. 70s equivalent of Jayden: awful awful awful.

June my nane nothing really horrible about it but its sort of 40s 50s etc name, cant see it returning soon.My mum couldnt think of a name to call me so she named me after the month i was born. But also it couldnt be shortened and her name was Irene and she was often called Rene which she didnt like.

Names go with certain years dont they.Samanthas born in 60s.my friend is called that, she hates it,insists on being called Sam.

Sunbeam18 · 12/02/2021 23:24

Beverley

MummyBearBoo · 12/02/2021 23:26

Margaret, I would have said Mabel but I've since seen 2 children called it, Kathleen, Fanny, Enid, Carol

chestnutmares · 12/02/2021 23:27

@OccultGnuAsWell I came on to say Edna too! Would love to know if anyone knows any baby Ednas.

TinselTinsel · 12/02/2021 23:28

My name was never in fashion to make a comeback!
Always hated it too, about 9/10 can't spell it and 7/10 can't read it and its not that difficult!

Mamanyt · 12/02/2021 23:50

Hortense and Ethel. Or at least, I hope not!

I don't think Graham, Alan, Keith or Gareth will be popular for a long time.

I haven't heard of anyone young called Stephanie, Sarah, Rachel, Kelly, Claire, Hannah, Casey, Kayleigh, Gemma, Laura, Lauren in a while - very common names of girls who grew up in the 90s

Thisismyusernamefornow · 13/02/2021 00:07

Linda

FuckingFabulous · 13/02/2021 00:10

Fanny and Dick

x2boys · 13/02/2021 00:20

I do think some names are popular for a particular period in time Darren and Craig for example were popular in the 60,s and 70,s I can't imagine they will make a resurgence any time soon ,but the boys names I remember from my childhood David ,Paul,Peter ,John etc whilst not popular now will probably come back in 40 or 50 years

TheMoth · 13/02/2021 00:22

I think a lot depends on where you live. Local trends are different where I live, compared to where I work.

Dh wanted a tallulah or a delilah. Ffs. He doesn't read.

Never met a young Linda.Angela. Lorna. Few Kellys. Andrea.

Trying to find my g dad's records, but it's a fucking nightmare cos every male born within 10 years either side of him and in the same county has EXACTLY the same name and surname. At least future generations will find tracking us down easier.

Libraryghost · 13/02/2021 00:26

Sharon is actually a really old name. Hebrew. Rose of Sharon. Sounds quite pretty really? I blame ViZ and the 2 fat slags Sharon and Tracey for wrecking it! Any young Nicola’s or Claire’s around? I associate those names from when I was at high school in the 80s.

x2boys · 13/02/2021 00:27

Some names will always be classic and are in and out of popularity ,Jane ,Mary Emma ,Luke,Daniel Matthew etc .

Celestine70 · 13/02/2021 00:27

I think they will all come back around.
