I don’t think I’ll ever hear of a baby Gary.

I know two adult Gary’s and both are in their 50’s now

Took me all night to think of some: Merrick and Bathsheba!

Twospaniels · 12/02/2021 10:32

I met a little girl called Margo last year, she would be about 4 now. Makes me think of Margo Leadbetter in The Good Life, but I like it.

Lots of Margots and even Margaux round here!

Are there many baby Natalie's these days? It seemed to be one of the top names when I was in primary in the 90s but seems to have died out a bit now.
There were 116 baby Natalie’s born in 2019

Myra

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/02/2021 10:40

One I just heard mentioned on R4 - Lois.

BTW, @MotherWol, how can you think U.K. Hilda is not OK, but find Non-UK Hilde lovely, when they’re pronounced almost exactly the same?

steppemum · 12/02/2021 10:45

@IsThePopeCatholic

Because of Myra hindley, the child murderer.
But as i said earlier, anyone under about 30 won;t remember her will they?

And to the next generation she will just be a name in the history books and the name will be back in.

steppemum · 12/02/2021 10:48

@Minty82

Surprised by whoever it was (MrsKoala?) who said they didn’t know any Lucys under 30. I think of that one as genuinely timeless - I know quite a few little ones but plenty of adults too.
I know 2 teen Lucy

One is my own dd!

But I come across it all the time.

covetingthepreciousthings · 12/02/2021 10:49

I always find it a bit odd how Myra would most likely be frowned upon as a baby name yet I don't think anyone thinks twice about the names Rose or even Ted..

Maybe because it's a bit more unusual?

BlueThursday · 12/02/2021 10:51

I think it can be regional. So here in Scotland Colin or Alan wouldn’t be that out place for a baby, particularly if it’s a family name

steppemum · 12/02/2021 10:55

I'll say it again

ALL these name will come round again

I cannot tell you just how ugly and unfashionable Archie was when I was a child. Totally the same as Gary or Keith.
tastes change.

The only ones that really will not are either where the name has such strong association that it will never go away (and I don't class Myra in that at all) or when there is a new meaning for it eg Alexa.
So the only ones I think won't come back are:

Adolf
Alexa (until tech moves on, and then it will)
Gaylord
Gaynor

I can't think of any others.
In 40 years, no-one will remember Sharon and Tracy or Karen, or Boris etc

bagsofbats · 12/02/2021 10:59

I know a Morris and an Alan, both under 10. My mid teen daughter loves the name Gary, she thinks it's really cool!

yes! and even though Ian has declined in popularity, it isn;t because of Ian brady is it? And he was far fra worse than Myra, as he was unrepentant to the end
IstandwithJackieWeaver · 12/02/2021 11:23

That's the thing with name isn't it? Some more unusual ones become indelibly linked to particular people. We all have a name we wouldn't give a child because of the connotations it has for us.

covetingthepreciousthings · 12/02/2021 12:13

Roy
Eugene

TurquoiseDragon · 12/02/2021 13:27

@Kinsters

Myra...

I actually think it's a beautiful name but I'm sure noone would ever use it now.

Give it another generation, and you'll see it used. Myra Hindley is already dropping out of memory, the younger ones have no idea who she is.
WatchWatch · 12/02/2021 14:13

Almost all names come back round. I imagine the only ones that don't are offensive/ have rude words associated with them like Gaylord or Dick, Adolf and Fanny.

Clawdy · 12/02/2021 15:32

I was at school back in the fifties with a couple of Myras, and it never sounded a beautiful name at all, just a bit like Moira or Muriel. It will take a long time for the name to be forgotten in Manchester.

MrsDrudge · 12/02/2021 15:41

Dick
Maurice

cafedesreves · 12/02/2021 16:11

@Seafog

Beulah Jamie Miranda Sharon Dennis
I love Jamie! 2 born recently near me
DreamyDreamer333 · 12/02/2021 16:28

I think there are some prettier names from the 70s / 80s that will eventually be revived such as Gillian, Jennifer, Joanne, Louise, Lisa, Jessica, Meghan, Gemma, Kerry, Nicola although not for a long time maybe another generation. Then there's a lot that wont be : Sharon, Tracey, Laura, Clare, Lynne, Sarah, Fiona, Deborah, Donna not as pretty / flowery as first list.
