How many sausages per person with bangers and mash? Are we a greedy family?

Bangers and mash for dinner tonight (I'm having soup because I'm trying to lose weight) and I was wondering what a normal portion looks like to other people? DH and my 16 and 18yo sons will eat at least 4 sausages each with a big pile of mash/peas/gravy. They would eat more sausages if there were more available! I remember when I was a child we were given 2 sausages each, but then I remember being very hungry as a child and meals often weren't generous enough (cup a soup and two slices of dry bread as dinner for a 9yo, for example).

So - how many sausages?

I'll have 2, but then a mountain sized mound of mash and veg. I'd probably have 4 if I was a bigger lover of meat. 4 sounds fine to me

missymoomoomoomoomoo · 10/02/2021 18:27

Depends on if you snack during the day.

If you don't then 3-4 is ok

SabrinaMorningstar · 10/02/2021 18:29

Two each here. My portions growing up seem similar to your's and I think those portion sizes are about right. Lots of people make portions too big now.

Two for me three for DH. I eat the sixth for breakfast next day.

AdaColeman · 10/02/2021 18:31

I'd normally have two sausages as a serving, I'm sure a teenager could easily eat three or four.

AgeLikeWine · 10/02/2021 18:31

Three for me, please. Good quality, too. None of your cheapo rubbish. I always cook a few too many, to ensure a supply of leftovers in the fridge for late-night snacking.

I do enjoy a nice porky banger before bed. Smile

IseeIsee · 10/02/2021 18:32

If proper sausages then 2

BuggersMuddle · 10/02/2021 18:32

3 each for me (petite) and tall DH if it’s something like Tesco Finest.

Probably sounds massive for me and stingy for him, but he’s a snacker (I’m not) & I do more sport. He will eat a hell of a lot more mash though.

Hilarious question and responses!!

My youngest didn't speak until he was around 2. Before that, he said things that we knew the meaning of... Sausages were called oggogg.. because that was his way of repeating 'all gone' which was the word we used most often for sausages! I also remember the poor little boy howling because I burned the sausages and had to throw them away, he could not understand why I would not let him eat them. We still joke about oggoggs and he could still eat a whole plate full..

purplecorkheart · 10/02/2021 18:34

To be honest it depends. My local butcher shop does different flavour and the size varies. The plain pork I would say four for a hungry adult, where as their pork and black pudding I would say two to three.

Tal45 · 10/02/2021 18:37

2 sausages, we buy a 6 pack between 3. Sausage and mash is my favourite meal. Very high in white carbs though so if I was tryng to lose weight I'd definitely really reduce the mash and up the green veg.
I wouldn't consider cup a soup a meal though.

RoomAtTheEndOfTheWorld · 10/02/2021 18:37

We had sausage & mash last night.
DH, me and DS who is 6.
It was a 6 pack of sausages so I did 2 each, but DH and I had plenty of mash, Savoy cabbage, broccoli & carrots so 2 felt enough.
Veg dodging DS had 2 Yorkshire puddings with his, but then didn't really eat any of the sausages anyway (So DH finished them off)

I would generally do 3 sausages per adult, unless they were chipolatas, when I'd do 4.

Neenan · 10/02/2021 18:39

Haven’t RTFT but what is a sausage? I mean are we talking a big fat one or chipolata? Two big fat ones for me but four chipolatas.

ktp100 · 10/02/2021 18:40

Depends on the size of the sausages, really.

If they're big, fat bangers then DH would have 3, me & DS (7) 2 - if they were chipolatas DH 4 and us 3.

Mash is very filling, maybe add more veg to fill them up rather than more mash or sausage?

ViciousJackdaw · 10/02/2021 18:40

@TheQueef

My favourite tea is 3 sausage, 2 eggs and a few chips for dipping. You need 3 sausage to use up two yolks or you'd need bread and butter too Hmm
You cannot beat sausage, egg and chips. I wouldn't want it every day but when the mood is right, there is nothing nicer. I do think that bread and butter is a vital part of the dish regardless of the sausage/yolk ration though.
Shehasadiamondinthesky · 10/02/2021 18:40

I couldn't eat more than one quorn sausage. I'm vegetarian. Id feel horrible full.

Quornflakegirl · 10/02/2021 18:40

Dh has 4
I have 2
Dc (both 8) have 1.5 each

So I cook a pack of 10 which I usually get in Tesco.

GoryGilmore · 10/02/2021 18:41

3 quorn sausages each for adults, 2 each for the 4 and 6 year olds.

OhWhyNot · 10/02/2021 18:42

The extra special type fat ones myself and ds have two each

From the chip shop just the one really crap but really delicious and deep friend Grin

HideTanner · 10/02/2021 18:42

I couldn't eat more than one quorn sausage either.

My bowels would explode. Horrible stuff.

LolaSmiles · 10/02/2021 18:43

2 here with a good serving of mash and other veg.
A lot will depend on how meat heavy people like their meals.

Someone like my dad who think a meal should have a large meat serving would probably eat 4, whereas someone like me who eats a low meat diet is content with 2 and lots of veg. I don't think sausage number necessarily reflects overall portion size.

VinylDetective · 10/02/2021 18:43

Four sausages seems perfectly reasonable for teenage lads, their stomachs are bottomless pits. I haven’t RTFT but I’m sure someone’s said half a sausage and a teaspoon of mash is enough for anyone.

MintyMabel · 10/02/2021 18:43

I have only two, but only because I have way more mash than is necessary.

Neenan · 10/02/2021 18:43

Adding to my earlier comment, I sent DH for Cumberland sausage in the Lakes, and I swear that the sausage he brought back was the size of a dinner plate coiled up. No exaggeration, it wasn’t meant for one, but I had never seen a sausage as big in my life.

Well maybe once 😉

Desmondo2016 · 10/02/2021 18:44

4 here for the adults and teenagers. 2 for the 4 year old. Assuming it's normal size banger style. Those Chipolatas that go all caramelised on the side and that's easily increased to 7 or 8🤣

No obesity crisis here, just a love of food!!!
