How many sausages per person with bangers and mash? Are we a greedy family?

Bangers and mash for dinner tonight (I'm having soup because I'm trying to lose weight) and I was wondering what a normal portion looks like to other people? DH and my 16 and 18yo sons will eat at least 4 sausages each with a big pile of mash/peas/gravy. They would eat more sausages if there were more available! I remember when I was a child we were given 2 sausages each, but then I remember being very hungry as a child and meals often weren't generous enough (cup a soup and two slices of dry bread as dinner for a 9yo, for example).

So - how many sausages?

My husband would eat as many as he is allowed! My children would get 2, maybe 3, each and I'd probably serve myself 4 (maybe 3 if I wasn't so hungry).

nancywhitehead · 10/02/2021 18:46

I'd want 3... but would probably have 2 if I was being good Halo

Lastbonestanding · 10/02/2021 18:46

Adults 3 each, under 10s 2 each. I don't like giving them more sausages as we have them too often and too much processed meat isn't good for them.

Husband has 3 the rest of us 2 or depending how hungry people are, but the ones I buy only come in packs of 6 so I rarely buy them because I'd need three packs and I'd rather buy a joint of meat.

tatutata · 10/02/2021 18:49

I have 3, DH has as many as are spare. Kids have 1 or 2 but they're 7 and under.

NotMeekNotObedient · 10/02/2021 18:50

2 for an adult.

Beautiful3 · 10/02/2021 18:50

When we have bangers, cabbage, plum tomatoes and mash, my husband has 4 sausages, I have 3 and the children have 2. Theres always left over sausages if they want them, usually we bag them for the next day.

user2021 · 10/02/2021 18:52

2 each as a rule for adults. But DH would complain and always have a third sausage. He's cool himself 4 if he was cooking and eating on his own though. He's overweight.

3yo and 2yo get 1-1.5 each

OldAndWornOut · 10/02/2021 18:52

Oh that sounds nice!
Tinned plum tomatoes?

Windchangeface · 10/02/2021 18:53

I think it’s kinda hard to portion as a ‘standard’ especially with teenagers. Are they tall/athletic? Spend several hours a day walking the dog? Are they skinny rakes with constant appetites? Do they eat bigger meals instead of constant snacking through the day?

If so then I don’t think 4 sausages and a pile of mash is unreasonable at all.

If they are spending all day on games consoles or you have concerns about their weight or health them maybe it should be cut to 2/3 sausages.

My DB and DH are both physically active, slim and would eat at least 4 sausages each with a pile of potatoes and still want a generous dessert. They could eat like that every day and not gain weight. Neither of them snack between meals.

I could only eat 2 max and a small portion of mash but I’m less active and like to snack

SillyLittleBiscuit · 10/02/2021 18:53

My mum recently made toad in the hole for four and used 24 sausages. Six sausages each as well as batter, mash and veg. Unbelievable.

Gobbeldegook · 10/02/2021 18:53

2 is more than enough, they're really unhealthy. If they're still hungry bulk the meal out with veg.
If I do bangers and mash I do a sausage casserole with sliced sausage and loads of veg, so a 10 pack goes around 2 adults, an 11 year old and a 4 year old with leftovers to spare for tomorrows lunch (normally mine and dh, but these days it's kids lunch and dh bait. I get a sarnie 😂 bloody kids off school stealing my warmup dinner 🤣)

BoomBoomsCousin · 10/02/2021 18:54

I have 1, kids have 1 or 2, husband normally has 3 but would happily eat 6 if they were on the plate.

If we had 4 sausages each we could have roast beef for the price, I'd never buy them!

Babyroobs · 10/02/2021 18:54

I'd probably have 2 or 3 but my teenage boys would easily eat 4.

stampsurprise · 10/02/2021 18:55

4 for adults at this house. It’s those Richmond (?) chicken sausage though so low in fat. My BMI is 21 so it’s not doing me any harm Smile

Having said that, I am working on getting animal products out of my diet so will need to find a new sausage!

DishedUp · 10/02/2021 18:56

@Candyfloss99

2 each. Scoop of mash. Unlimited veggies.
You don't serve unlimited veggies though do you though?

Do you stand in the kitchen cooking portion after portion of spinach?

shinynewapple21 · 10/02/2021 18:56

It would depend on how many in pack as I would ensure for two portions . So either 3 or 4. I have separate veggie sausages and I have two or 3 .

pinkearedcow · 10/02/2021 18:56

they're really unhealthy

That's why they are so delicious! Proper bangers with a high meat content aren't so bad, especially if you bake them.

TheCrowening · 10/02/2021 18:57

There’ll be three on my plate and three on my husband’s plate.

Then I’ll eat two and he’ll eat four.

Tricerapops · 10/02/2021 18:57

Not bangers and mash but we've just finished toad in the hole and all had 3 big sausages - DH, me, 6 and 2 yo DC. 6 yo asked if I had extras 🙄 he's on 9th centile so I don't know where he puts it all.

FinalSongbird · 10/02/2021 18:58

3 for husband, 2 for me 1-1.5 for small children.

I definitely couldn't eat four sausages.

WombatChocolate · 10/02/2021 18:59

If you buy high quality sausages with high meat content, such as Tesco Finest, the portion size indicated on the pack is 2. The calories and the protein content from 2 is high.

Sausages are one of those things that lots of people would eat as many are available and keep going with them. With a decent amount of mash and lots of veg, no-one needs more than 2 to be full.....but if they are used to 3 or 4, I suppose 2 might seem mean.

It’s the general case with meat that we eat much bigger portions of it than needed.

Clearly there isn’t a right answer and especially with teens or big eaters generally, reducing the number given might not go down well.....but no-one would actually be hungry after 2 quality sausages if they also had mash and veg too.

There’s a difference between NEEDING loads of meat and liking/wanting it. Of course people are free to eat or over-eat whatever they want. I’ve seen my BiL eat 6 of those meaty quality sausages - a whole pack. Not sure he even realised he’d had 6, with his initial 3 and then extras.

Interesting to hear how much quality low fat mince people allow per portion of how much chicken etc too.

DishedUp · 10/02/2021 18:59

Me and DP would have 3 each mostly because they come in a pack of 6 and there's 2 of us. My brother would have had at least 4 as teens. And tbh if I've had a particularly active day I'd probably want 4. 2 is a snack!

I'm not and never have been overweight. Sausages are bloody delicious though!

SpeckledyHen · 10/02/2021 19:00

2 , never more with spuds and veg .

Bingowin · 10/02/2021 19:01

DP 4
Me 3
DD (12) 1!
DS (10) 3

The males would eat more if available.
