How many sausages per person with bangers and mash? Are we a greedy family?

Bangers and mash for dinner tonight (I'm having soup because I'm trying to lose weight) and I was wondering what a normal portion looks like to other people? DH and my 16 and 18yo sons will eat at least 4 sausages each with a big pile of mash/peas/gravy. They would eat more sausages if there were more available! I remember when I was a child we were given 2 sausages each, but then I remember being very hungry as a child and meals often weren't generous enough (cup a soup and two slices of dry bread as dinner for a 9yo, for example).

So - how many sausages?

I normally think portions sound big on MN but I'd easily have 3 sausages for a main meal. That would give a similar portion to one chicken breast unless the sausages were mega chunky.

Cam2020 · 10/02/2021 18:19

2 for me, 3 for DP, 1 for 3 year old. I honestly couldn't say what's normal for teens!

"But not if she also served a massive salad and loads of veggies!"

Well obviously. If I'm feeling really adventurous I might have some crusty bread and lashings of REAL butter. (but I'd have to leave the forkful of mash because that's just far too many carbs tinkly laugh)

santabetterwashhishands · 10/02/2021 18:19

Iid have two
The seven year old would have two
Dh would have 3

SwedishK · 10/02/2021 18:20

Never had more than 2. Growing up I would have 1, until I was a teenager. My DD barely eats and will have 1, DH and DS will have 3 each. Me and DD doesn’t eat meat anymore though so it’s been a few since I last cooked sausages.

Anonanon12 · 10/02/2021 18:20

3 for my 12 year old, but he could easily eat 4, then 2 for the under 12s and myself, 1 for our pre school aged child, I'd probably give him 2 when he reaches 5

IReallyNeedMoreGin · 10/02/2021 18:20

My 9yo had 4 with his yesterday as well as 3 Yorkshire puddings! Adults in our house would have 4 or 5 but we eat way more veg than the kids as well.

Lovemusic33 · 10/02/2021 18:21

Always 2 here for adults and teens.

WaxOnFeckOff · 10/02/2021 18:21

Funnily enough, we rarely have just bangers and mash, i'd tend to maybe do a "fry up" or use the sausages in something, probably a throw back to when DS1 wouldn't eat gravy.

I tend to buy quite chonky high protein sausages but it would depend on size of pack, how many were fore dinner. Mostly it's a packet of 8 so that would be 2 for me and 3 each if just DH and adult DS1, but in that case I might give them an egg or xtra beans or something.

I made sausage stovies the other day and put 4 in each (chopped into 4) but there was leftovers for 2 for a small lunch portion as well.

TryingNotToPanicOverCovid · 10/02/2021 18:22

I'm thinking I might up my game a bit with sausages. Always bought a pack of 8 between the 4 of us. So if we cooked another pack of 8 would seem silly as then too many.

But maybe I'm thinking I might start doing this. It just never occured to me it would be okay to have more than 2 as that was a portion in my mind. But I have seconds of other things so makes no sense really!

Morten · 10/02/2021 18:22

4 each sounds fine! Dh and teen ds will eat that amount of good quality sausages from the local butchers no problem but likely eat less mash whereas I'm the opposite.

Twospaniels · 10/02/2021 18:22

We have a pack of 6 Cumberland or Lincolnshire sausages and have 3 each.

ArabellaScott · 10/02/2021 18:22

Depends on the sausages. Those co-op packs of 6, probably 2 or maybe 3.

Somanysplitends · 10/02/2021 18:22

We'd cook a pack of six, two for me, three for DH and one for the spoiled rotten dog.

Keep the excess cooked sausages in the fridge overnight and make sandwiches with them for lunch the next day.
LadyDanburysCane · 10/02/2021 18:23

I buy lovely fat sausages from the butcher. DH and (practically adult) DS and I all have two each in our plate but I rarely finish both of mine (usually one of the men will relieve me of what I can’t manage). This will be with mash and mixed veg.

None of us like big meals though.....

namechangefail2020 · 10/02/2021 18:23

I could murder some proper sausage right now. Damn the diet and damn you for making me want 4 sausages instead of quinoa

lunar1 · 10/02/2021 18:23

1 but we order from the sausage man, they are the Christmas market ones and huge. I feel tff he W need to dig some out the freezer for tomorrow!

gratitutesmynewthing · 10/02/2021 18:24

@sadpapercourtesan what's the meat percentage ?

We have 3, DS 2 who's age 5, we tend to get Tesco own brand the finest range, 85% pork. Personally I not keen on the thought of sausages, but they do taste lovely with mash!

gingercat02 · 10/02/2021 18:24

DH has 5, I limit ds 12 and me to 3 each as they aren't v good for you. I would like DH to have less but he is an adult and does run a lot so that's his choice

LadyCatStark · 10/02/2021 18:24

Depends on the sausage. We prefer the long chipolata ones and we have 4 each. That’s only really the equivalent of 2 normal sized ones though, you just feel like you’re getting more!

The ones from our butcher are so big, I can barely manage one and I’m no MN celery sniffer!

TBH I’d rather have more mash and gravy and less sausage 😂.

I bet he can't wait. What a day! Grin
HaveANiceFuckingDay · 10/02/2021 18:25

We buy from the butcher so they’re quite big
2 each
If I buy from the co-op or Tesco then 3 each

NaToth · 10/02/2021 18:25

Three each here. Usually Sainsbury's Toulouse -inspired.

I did think last night that we should probably only have two, but there are only two of us and six in a pack.
