How many sausages per person with bangers and mash? Are we a greedy family?

Bangers and mash for dinner tonight (I'm having soup because I'm trying to lose weight) and I was wondering what a normal portion looks like to other people? DH and my 16 and 18yo sons will eat at least 4 sausages each with a big pile of mash/peas/gravy. They would eat more sausages if there were more available! I remember when I was a child we were given 2 sausages each, but then I remember being very hungry as a child and meals often weren't generous enough (cup a soup and two slices of dry bread as dinner for a 9yo, for example).

So - how many sausages?

As long as you’re eating a balanced diet I don’t think it’s greedy! Me and my OH have 4 and DD 2/3 served with at least a third of a plate of veg and veg mash. None of us are close to being overweight 🤷🏼‍♀️ But it’s also not a meal we have very often!

Tequilaslammers · 11/02/2021 17:44

2 each here! My teenagers, husband and me.
Big spoon of sweet potato mash and veg, yum!

Nearly47 · 11/02/2021 17:44

I have 2. Husband and teens boys have three each. Now you made me crave bangers and mash and have no sausages in the fridge :(

I used to have an ED (I think people with current ED are probably attracted to food threads on MN) I wasted about 8 years of my life calculating calories and fat and weighing out food and was thoroughly miserable I've been a healthy weight for over 15 years and eat more or less what I like, as well as do plenty of exercise. If I fancy 3 or 4 sausages I'll have them and enjoy them, it's not like I'm going to do that every day....

Harmonypuss · 11/02/2021 17:49

The quality/size of the sausages is what is be using to make the decision.

Personally, I only buy Tesco's best quality sausages and I'm pushing it to manage to eat 2, my son's when they were teenagers could have easily eaten 3 or 4 but my partner is sausage mad and would eat however many I've got if I didn't ration him!

Mary54 · 11/02/2021 17:50

Depends on the sausages obviously. But 4 each for teenage males seems about right as they are generally bottomless pits in terms of food requirements.

christmasathomeagain · 11/02/2021 17:54

3 usually in this house.

Sarahrellyboo1987 · 11/02/2021 17:56

Depends on the sausages themselves. We often have Heck chicken sausages and they’re much slimmer.

A normal sausage would be 2.5 for adults and 1.5 for smaller children (primary age). For Heck sausages it’s 4 for adults and 2.5 for children.
However, there’s plenty of mash and 2/3 types of veggies which are homegrown and gravy.

For me it’s not a portion size concern but a cost, environmental and health concern

If my children are hungry they let me know or help themselves to food. They never say they’re hungry after dinner so I feel it’s the right size for mine.

Everyone is different though.

Carpedimum · 11/02/2021 17:57

Two each here, DP & DS with potato (mash or baked), I just have greens - three seems like a good idea, but then you’d have that horrid full feeling, so two is perfectly adequate. That said, in the olden days, if we ever went to a carvery, I couldn’t believe the amount of food other people can eat.

ItsAllBlahBlahBlah · 11/02/2021 18:00

Two here for me and DH, ds 1 (3) gets 1.5 and ds2 (1) gets a half chopped up with lots of mash and veg. DH would probably have more but I cook and he doesn't complain

PlentyOfBiscuitsWithTea · 11/02/2021 18:02

We have big appetites but kids only have 2, adults have 3. I pretend I'm also having 2 and always nick the third thats I've cooked and left in the pan. (We usually buy them in 10s). Proper butchers sausages.

Juanbablo · 11/02/2021 18:03

I would have 2 veggie sausages. Rest of the family are meat eaters. Dd will only have 1 sausage because she isn't a fan. Boys will have 2. Dh will have 3.

Plunger · 11/02/2021 18:06

Depends how ' meaty' the sausages are. Our local butcher's sausages are really meaty and filling so probably 3 each. I have difficulty eating 2.Cheap ones full of cereal they could easily eat 5 !

Yourcatisnotsorry · 11/02/2021 18:11

2 for me, 3 for oh, 1 for baby and 2 for preschooler (who will sometimes eat all sometimes none). Our pack size is 8 so that’s largely why. I could easily eat 4 🤣 I’d expect 3 if ordering it in a cafe etc.

PurBal · 11/02/2021 18:11

2 each. Might have 3 but would only be if we went back for seconds. Cold sausages are lunchtime winners.

janex1 · 11/02/2021 18:16

3 as good sausages aren't cheap. They can eat more potatoes----

Ddot · 11/02/2021 18:16

2 is enough for anyone. Mash, peas and onion gravy with mushrooms and a pudding of fruit and yogurt if still hungry. 4 is rather alot

Recruit2020 · 11/02/2021 18:24

Brilliant thread. Just putting it out there the cheap sausages you get in Asda cafes with chips and cloggy beans are elite standard. I wont hear any different.

GrouchyKiwi · 11/02/2021 18:27

We had bangers & mash for tea tonight because of this thread. 2 each for DH and me, 1 1/3 for the children. We're going to have to start buying more sausages soon.

So thanks, OP. Dinner was excellent. Onion gravy is a joy and delight with super buttery mash!

DanceItOut · 11/02/2021 18:32

Well that would depend on the type of sausage. A big fat one then just 2 but we pile up the veg to fill as up. Thin ones then 3 maybe 4 if there is enough in the packet. Again loads of veg. If anyone is still hungry there’s plenty of fruit salad and veg around to fill up on.

CinnamonStar · 11/02/2021 18:39

I usually buy chipolatas if I'm buying them pre-packaged, as then it seems like more.
3 chipolatas each seems enough, but 1.5 sausages from a 6 pack just doesn't, even though the weight is the same. It seems excessive to buy 2 packs.

If I am buying them from the butcher, I'll get 2 sausages each, plus an extra one for luck (usually gets shared by DH and Dd1).

bemusedmoose · 11/02/2021 18:39

2 or 3 but then we would have peas, carrots and broccoli with the mash too. Me and the kids would eat sausages until we burst if i didnt stop us.

Excess protein is converted into sugars and stored in the body as fat (i am studying nutrition) so too much protein isnt good for the body, similar to excess carbs are also stored as fat. It will depend on activity levels as to how much is too much but 2-3 would be enough for anyone that isnt going to the gym a lot, 2 if activity levels are low would be the max. As i tell my son - you want to eat more - you have to do more!

Lucyk1 · 11/02/2021 18:42

2 sausages.... Anything more than that and that could be one of the reasons so many people are over weight. Portion sizes have become way too big and people don't seem to realise what normal is

SnozPoz · 11/02/2021 18:43

It would depend on how many people and how many sausages in the packet. DH easily eats 4. I would have 2 and then go for a third. Pack of eight that leaves one lonely sausage that generally gets shared, or eaten during the clear up!!

LAgeDeRaisin · 11/02/2021 18:43

DH is an olympic rower so has 27 but he has them while on the ergonometer.

DD has 1 while she studies at Oxford (RG), tall and willowy. She's really popular too and volunteers teaching blind puppies to read. The puppies have 2.

DS17, athletic, has 1 blended into his protein shake.

I had a cocktail sausage at a birthday party when I was 9 and am still full. HUGE salad though.
