How many sausages per person with bangers and mash? Are we a greedy family?

Bangers and mash for dinner tonight (I'm having soup because I'm trying to lose weight) and I was wondering what a normal portion looks like to other people? DH and my 16 and 18yo sons will eat at least 4 sausages each with a big pile of mash/peas/gravy. They would eat more sausages if there were more available! I remember when I was a child we were given 2 sausages each, but then I remember being very hungry as a child and meals often weren't generous enough (cup a soup and two slices of dry bread as dinner for a 9yo, for example).

So - how many sausages?

The whole family gathers around a single chipolata and take turns sniffing at it.

No more than two sniffs in one sitting though. We wouldn't want to be greedy.

Then we put the chipolata back into the fridge so that we can sniff it for lunch the following day.

We used to have 3 or 4 each but trying to cut down so more likely 2 each

Tbf packs of sausages used to be8 in a pack but now seems to be 6 ( apart from the massive packs ) so 2 each and 2 for my partners lunch the next day

Crabbypaddy · 10/02/2021 23:30

We just lick the packet in this house.

DishingOutDone · 11/02/2021 00:02

We dream of licking t’packet ...

OldAndWornOut · 11/02/2021 00:14

We just hang around with people we know have locked the packet and try to absorb any calories they may breathe out.

I hope you let them know what disgusting gelatinous gastropods they are and that they are singlehandedly destroying our health services.

2 sausages is approx 300 calories. A scoop of potato is about 120 calories. Half a tin of peas is maybe 100 calories. That’s already a 520 calorie meal before you even add gravy!

DH might have an extra sausage which makes his dinner 670 calories, and that should be enough for anyone. These people who are eating large piles of potato and four sausages must be averaging 1000 calories in a single meal!

TryingNotToPanicOverCovid · 11/02/2021 00:38

I guess if breakfast is 250cals and lunch 4-500 and no snacks then a 1000 dinner is okay.

itwillbehormones · 11/02/2021 00:45

2 .. any leftovers from a bigger packed get used for sarnies.

Twixmas · 11/02/2021 00:49

3 each usually for sons 11 and 13. I don't think that's excessive really. Bit of mash and gravy on top. They're growing lads. They'd take seconds but there aren't any usually!

fannyFERNACKERPANN · 11/02/2021 01:25

This one sausage would be plenty for my family of 5, maybe a scoop of mash and a sprinkle of peas if we're particularly hungry

fannyFERNACKERPANN · 11/02/2021 01:26

Hubby would wolf down 6 if he had his way but I dictate what amount he eats so he has one thin slither of sausage and that's his lot

Poppins2016 · 11/02/2021 01:32

I also grew up being served 2, which is actually a reasonable portion for me personally. DH who over-serves portions would say 3-4.

Enough4me · 11/02/2021 01:33

Two if chunky, but with cooked tomatoes, sweetcorn cobettes or mushrooms as well to pad the meal out.

IcedLimes · 11/02/2021 01:48

We used to just walk past the sausage section in Sainsburys and glance at the sausages. That was more than enough for us. Because of Covid we now look at photos of sausages on the sainsbury's website. We feel stuffed afterwards.

So funny that this thread has so many replies. Serious issue. 😂

Btw, pack of 8: 2 for DH, 2 for Ds (17), 1.5 for me, 1.5 for ds (11), and 1 for DD.

Damnloginpopup · 11/02/2021 06:34

We took turns to read the word sausage in our dictionary last night then closed bit with a potato masher. That'll do until next Thursday.

PeggyHill · 11/02/2021 06:37

DH and I have 3 each, usually. We are a bit fat.

krj2688 · 11/02/2021 08:43

My husband has 3, I have 2, 5 year old has 2 and 3 year old has 1.

ivykaty44 · 11/02/2021 08:46

We have 2 sausages each
