How many sausages per person with bangers and mash? Are we a greedy family?

Bangers and mash for dinner tonight (I'm having soup because I'm trying to lose weight) and I was wondering what a normal portion looks like to other people? DH and my 16 and 18yo sons will eat at least 4 sausages each with a big pile of mash/peas/gravy. They would eat more sausages if there were more available! I remember when I was a child we were given 2 sausages each, but then I remember being very hungry as a child and meals often weren't generous enough (cup a soup and two slices of dry bread as dinner for a 9yo, for example).

So - how many sausages?

At my primary school we serve 3 sausages per child. They are organic and lean-a good size too.

Pebbles574 · 10/02/2021 21:54

1 for me
2 for DH
3-4 for young adult DSs and more if available!

We cook two packs of 6.

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 10/02/2021 21:56

A packet of 8 bog standard sausages are all cooked. 1 baking spud, cooked and mashed. 2 sausages for me and my sprog.
Generally 2 sausages in a sarnie is what we have. Any left over are munched on later.

I have 2, DH has 3, Adult DS in physical job has 4.
Each to their own, the above suits us

TheBestSpoon · 10/02/2021 21:59

3 for DH, about 2/3rds of one for DS (aged 2) and 2 plus the rest of DS's for me. Standard Tesco own brand sausages if that makes a difference!

Coldbatteredpuddings · 10/02/2021 22:00

It depends on the sausage! 3 if bog standard, inexpensive supermarket ones. 2 if they are decent butcher ones. My teenager might have 3 butcher ones if he is particularly hungry.

Bollss · 10/02/2021 22:03

Omg one sausage. Wtf!

3 or 4 here but I don't have much mash only because i prefer the sausage and the veg. Less if I'm having a Yorkshire pudding with it.

Dp would eat 4 and loads of mash and veg and Yorkshire puddings but he's not overweight so what does it matter!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 10/02/2021 22:08

I adore sausages... never met one I didn't like. I even have photos of them on my phone.

Perhaps other posters do that too and just gaze at the photos instead of eating the actual sausages for fear of being greedy?

We need a sausage emoji. Grin

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 10/02/2021 22:12

We all have 2 each. The DC are primary age, I couldn't eat more than 2, and DH doesn't really like sausages and only eats them on sufferance. I expect the DC will need more as they get older.

Labobo · 10/02/2021 22:14

I have 2, or sometimes 1.5 if they are chunky. DH has 3. DS1 has 2-3 veggie ones which are a bit thinner and DS2 has 2.

micc · 10/02/2021 22:15

Me and OH always have 3

EveningOverRooftops · 10/02/2021 22:26

I buy in packs of 6 and me and DC have 3 each. DC has more mash, approx equivalent to 8 new potatoes and I’ll have 4. I load up on more veg and will have cabbage, peas, a spoon of sweetcorn and broccoli with bangers and mash. DC has all sweetcorn and peas with a bit of the cabbage and broccoli.

Neither of us I’ve mash with toad in the hole though Confused

I’m losing weight. DC and active teen.

noblegreenk · 10/02/2021 22:32

For an adult portion I serve 3 large sausages.

whattodo2019 · 10/02/2021 22:33

Switch to chicken sausages, much less fat and add an extra one!
Heck sausages are quite nice

ShannonMarieW · 10/02/2021 22:42

Personally make 4 each, 21 & 25 yo.. growing boys need food... and girls🤪

wewillmeetagain · 10/02/2021 22:43

3 sons ( all big strapping lads) 4 or 5 each myself and DD 3 each.

sadpapercourtesan · 10/02/2021 22:44

Chicken sausages are filth Grin

I'd be so fucking disappointed if I was promised bangers and mash, and chicken sausages appeared!

RedcurrantPuff · 10/02/2021 22:45

I’d have 2, kids and H would have 3

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 10/02/2021 22:46

I’ve had beef sausages , they are rank

Norwayreally · 10/02/2021 22:53

The 8, 9 and 10 year old’s get 2, 2 year old DS gets 1 and DH and I get 3. Seems fair to us and nobody complains. 4 is excessive.

HappydaysArehere · 10/02/2021 22:57

The ones I buy are Sainsbury’s Taste The Difference Red Onion/Pork sausages. There are just the two of us so half the packet each which is 3 each. They seem really filling and are a good size. However chipolatas are another thing and you can have several with no trouble.

LimitIsUp · 10/02/2021 22:58

I have 3, dd (18) has 2, ds (16) had 4 as does dh. We choose our own portion sizes, not being sexist by giving the lads more.

I have the biggest mound of cheesy mash

Fuckingcrustybread · 10/02/2021 23:01

I was served a "British" breakfast in Kuala Lumpur and it was chicken sausages, fried eggs and bread. I agree that they are filth and totally wrong.
Camomila · 10/02/2021 23:02

DH has 3, DS1 has 1.5 and DS2 has half (cut length ways, he is a baby). I have 1 but I don't like sausages and eat extra mash.

AdoraBell · 10/02/2021 23:06

DH would eat a whole packet if left to his own devices.

Depending what I cook I either slice sausages so they go further, or just dish up 3 for him and 2 for me.

Occasionally I use them as meatballs for pasta sauce, or remove the skin and use them for chilli. That way a packet of 6 feeds 4 adults.
