How many sausages per person with bangers and mash? Are we a greedy family?

Bangers and mash for dinner tonight (I'm having soup because I'm trying to lose weight) and I was wondering what a normal portion looks like to other people? DH and my 16 and 18yo sons will eat at least 4 sausages each with a big pile of mash/peas/gravy. They would eat more sausages if there were more available! I remember when I was a child we were given 2 sausages each, but then I remember being very hungry as a child and meals often weren't generous enough (cup a soup and two slices of dry bread as dinner for a 9yo, for example).

So - how many sausages?

2 /3 at a push. More to do with extra calories rather than not being able to eat more though.

pooopypants · 11/02/2021 08:56

My DD6 could easily eat 5/6 but I limit her to around 4. My DS4 could easily eat 3/4 too. Neither are keen on mash though so the sausages make up the bulk of that meal

If I was at a 'bring your own meat' BBQ, with wine, I could eat all my own sausages and anybody else's if they left them unattended...Wink

We buy either the butchers sausages or the 97% higher welfare supermarket ones, so they are really meaty, and we still have 4 each per adult, 2-3 for the 8yo, 2 for the 6yo and one for the 4yo. I am not fat and purposely eat a high fat diet, so will have loads of butter on my veg too. I don’t eat mashed potatoes tho, so I would have swede instead.

I couldn’t survive on 2 sausages. Same as fish cakes, I know people who just have one with some veg. We have 2 each and 2 poached eggs to make it more filling.

Whattheduck · 11/02/2021 11:58

We usually buy a pack of 8 and Dh and Dd (16) will have 3 and I have 2 as 2’s enough for me

I know I will be flamed and I don't care but this thread highlights why at least 60% of population is overweight or obese, and over 20% of children.

But hey ho, it's OK, because the pharma companies will soon be peddling their new weight-loss injection, semaglutide, to the NHS for them Hmm.

Exhausteddog · 11/02/2021 12:15

I'm not sure how internet strangers can prescribe a meal is "far too much" or obviously leading to obesity on the description of 1 meal (without knowing anything else about them!)🤣

Bingo!!!

MadameButterface · 11/02/2021 12:17

Oh calm your tits and have a sausage and stop policing other people’s food intake by grasping at tenuous reasons why it might be any of your business. Concern trolling is not a good look on anyone, no matter how big or small their arse is.

SoupDragon · 11/02/2021 12:19

I only sniff one sausage. Anything more would be greedy.

SoupDragon · 11/02/2021 12:20

(DD and I have 2, adult DSs will eat as many as you put on their plate)

cocowhite · 11/02/2021 12:22

We had sausage and mash last week! 3 sausages each for the 12 and 14 year old and the toddler had 1. Adults 3 or 4 for dh Grin

You're right - at an individual level we have no idea what a poster's meal represents in terms of their daily calorie intake. But at a macro level there is a clear pattern of behaviour linked to overeating and obesity. The majority of people saying 3+ sausages is typical, even for children - the likelihood is that for most people that will result in a daily calorie surplus which, down the line, will result in being overweight and perhaps obesity. People don't like to hear it, but that's the reality I'm afraid.

Gosh, so much anger? Mind that high blood pressure! Wink

I think as we've seen during the pandemic, obesity and the pressure it puts on the NHS has become everyone's business.

georgarina · 11/02/2021 12:30

I have 2 but dp might have 3 or 4

So, your young adult DSs are on the road to obesity because they have 3-4 sausages (more if available)?

Nohomemadecandles · 11/02/2021 12:32

Aaand we've peaked! Go home folks, there's nothing else to see.

How much I eat depends on how hungry I am. Sometimes I’ll eat loads sometimes less.

So sausages - if I’d had hardly anything I’d probably have 3 but less mash. Normally maybe 2, but again not much mash.

Literallynoidea · 11/02/2021 12:36

Four each for DH, sons 10 and 14.

Three for teen DD.

Two for me

Literallynoidea · 11/02/2021 12:37

Just seen this thread is saying that if you eat more than two you're obese. Our whole family is slim and very active.

MadameButterface · 11/02/2021 12:38

Who’s angry Pebbles? I feel a bit sorry for people who project their food issues on to other people, but the rest of me finds the competitive undereating and self denial and sanctimonious pearl clutching at people who Don’t Live Exactly Like Me hilarious. You sound massively stressed though.

Createsuser · 11/02/2021 12:49

The key is husband and teenage sons. They probably need more calories than a 5”2 femaleWink

Misericordia · 11/02/2021 12:52

The number of sausages someone has in a meal won't tell you whether they are likely to become obese. Plenty of people have one big meal and two smaller meals and are not overweight.

MavisDracula1 · 11/02/2021 13:08

I'm not one of the posters who said we ate a lot of sausages or whatever, so comments re obesity weren't directed at me, however, I feel like I have to join in here.

Oh fgs "it's everyone's business" how many sausages someone eats? No, it isn't. I wonder if that poster polices whether, for example, people with longterm medical conditions are taking their medication correctly. I wonder if that poster polices whether people warm up properly before playing their sport, because if they don't, they could have a serious injury, which puts strain on the nhs. I could go on. No? You don't do that? So it's just weight issues you police. Maybe you should examine why that might be. The history around fatphobia, (that's what you are displaying if you 'concern troll' fat people only, and none of the other people who might put what you seem to see as an unacceptable level of strain on the NHS), is an interesting one and it is linked to other forms of bigotry. Suggest you read up as you may be inadvertently showing real prejudice dressed up as concern.

Clearly, there is a problem with weight, not just in this country but actually worldwide. Even very poor countries have levels of overweight; the lowest in the world is 20% overweight. But absolutely, some posters on MN use 'concern' about this issue as a stick to beat fat people with and you really need to ask why?

Pebbles574 · 11/02/2021 13:09

NHS dieticians recommend if you currently eat more than 90g (cooked weight) of red and processed meat a day that you cut down to 70g.

That's less than 2 sausages.

www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/meat-nutrition/

If you ARE going to eat more, then better to grill them and lose the fat, than fry or oven bake.
