How many sausages per person with bangers and mash? Are we a greedy family?

Bangers and mash for dinner tonight (I'm having soup because I'm trying to lose weight) and I was wondering what a normal portion looks like to other people? DH and my 16 and 18yo sons will eat at least 4 sausages each with a big pile of mash/peas/gravy. They would eat more sausages if there were more available! I remember when I was a child we were given 2 sausages each, but then I remember being very hungry as a child and meals often weren't generous enough (cup a soup and two slices of dry bread as dinner for a 9yo, for example).

So - how many sausages?

DH and DC1 (6) have 3 each, me and DC2 (3) have 2 each. We buy packs of ten so this works perfectly. I'm not sure what we will do when DC2 starts wanting more. I have only 2 for weight control reasons, not because I wouldn't like more.

Volcanoexplorer · 10/02/2021 20:52

Dh would easily eat 4, I’d have 3 ds (age 8) would have 2 and dd (age 5) would have 1. I buy the premium sausages Eg Asda Extra special so they’re quite fat.

The sausages with more meat in are more filling, we get those packs of 6 sausages from M&S that are 2 for £5 and I don't think I could manage 4 like DH does. We also get the frozen Richmond ones but they seem a lot smaller and much less filling.

I love these MN competitive orthorexia threads. Some amazingly unhealthy attitudes

I have 3 vegan if I have sausage and mash but it’s not my favourite meal tbh

pinkearedcow · 10/02/2021 20:56

Oh god! Who the fuck cares! Eat until you are full. Or less bored. Or replace sausages with vodka

As long as I can replace vodka with red wine, I am with you @ClangingChimesofDoom.

Schmoana · 10/02/2021 20:59

I have one, everyone else has 2. They are thick ones from a farm shop so pretty chunky. But 4 does sound like a lot 😂

LetMeStraightenMyCrownFirst · 10/02/2021 21:00

@NuniaBeeswax

Four sausages? faints A forkful of potato and a lick of gravy would be enough to see me through the day. This is why we have an obesity crisis, think of the NHS, etc.
Amen

I believe the manufacturers say two per portion of the largenones. DH can eat a whole pack Shock

OldAndWornOut · 10/02/2021 21:02

I am!
I'd pass out with so little sustenance.

TheVamoosh · 10/02/2021 21:05

I eat four, easily. And I'm borderline underweight avoiding to the NHS BMI calculator.

Saywhatyoumeanandmeanwhatyousa · 10/02/2021 21:10

I'd have three

DeRigueurMortis · 10/02/2021 21:15

I buy a pack of 6 (premium thick) sausages and DH/DS will have 3 each along side a mound of buttered mash, Yorkshire puddings and homemade onion gravy (or I might do toad in the hole but the same quantities apply).

I'm not keen on meat sausages (though I do eat meat) do I'll cook myself 2 vegetarian ones from the freezer, same for DSD when she's with us as she prefers the veggie ones also.

That's ample for me and DSD but I strongly suspect if I bought and cooked 8 meat sausages they'd find room to fit them in (neither are overweight btw just exercise a lot) Grin

RosesAndHellebores · 10/02/2021 21:19

4 adults here. In lockdown I usually cook 3 x 6 Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Cumberland. That usually means 2-3 each with mash and beans and leftovers for sausage sarnies for breakfast for two and/or fridge snacking Blush

Charm23 · 10/02/2021 21:29

I would eat 2-3, DD would eat 1, DH would eat as many as I served him but usually 3-4. Never 5-6 that seems an absurd amount. Only buy good quality/high meat content ones. Can't stand Richmond/cheap ones, I'd rather go without.

Empressofthemundane · 10/02/2021 21:35

I have two.
Husband has four.
14 year old daughter has two. (Sometimes had three when training, sport has stopped.)
17 year old daughter has three. (Sometimes had 4 when training, but COVID has slowed all sports right down.)

IcedLimes · 10/02/2021 21:36

4

ALongHardWinter · 10/02/2021 21:37

One sausage should be shared between the 4 of you. Grin

Serin · 10/02/2021 21:37
I feel stingy now.
ColinKnocksTwoPence · 10/02/2021 21:38

Had sausage, mash, mushrooms and baked beans this evening.
Dh, Dd (19) and I all had 2 sausages each.

EmpressSuiko · 10/02/2021 21:43

I could t eat more than 2! Sometimes I only have one, both dc have 2 each and DH has 2, sometimes he will have 3 unless he is saving any leftover ones for work the next day.

collywobble · 10/02/2021 21:43

3 for the teenage boys 16/17 and 2 for me. Would hanker for a third though most definitely but trying to be slim heading into menopause

ElizaLaLa · 10/02/2021 21:44

I'd serve 4 to an adult.

Cocacola12 · 10/02/2021 21:44

Depends on the sausages, big meaty quality ones I’d do 2/3 per person, skinny ones 4

BikerWife · 10/02/2021 21:44

I have 2, DH has 3.

Local butchers does amazing Lincolnshire sausages and I buy 5 links every week and we always have a sausage and mash night. Never used to be so hooked on sausages, I think they put crack in them! Grin

user1471538283 · 10/02/2021 21:52

I only buy good quality sausages and DS has 3 or 4. I eat meatless ones and I can eat 3. DS will have potato but I dont, just lots of sweet potato or vegetables. I remember having 2 growing up.
