How many sausages per person with bangers and mash? Are we a greedy family?

Bangers and mash for dinner tonight (I'm having soup because I'm trying to lose weight) and I was wondering what a normal portion looks like to other people? DH and my 16 and 18yo sons will eat at least 4 sausages each with a big pile of mash/peas/gravy. They would eat more sausages if there were more available! I remember when I was a child we were given 2 sausages each, but then I remember being very hungry as a child and meals often weren't generous enough (cup a soup and two slices of dry bread as dinner for a 9yo, for example).

So - how many sausages?

Depends how big the sausages are and if they're decent quality.

Dentistlakes · 10/02/2021 19:13

Depends on the sausage. Normal ‘fat’ sausages x2, chipolatas x3-4.

bengalcat · 10/02/2021 19:14

2 each

My dad often has sausage and mash if we go to a pub with them. Generally speaking the portions size seems to be 3 decent sausages.

FanFckingTastic · 10/02/2021 19:15

I'm shocked by the people who say that they have just two sausages and are not hungry, but then I'm greedy! My DH and teenage DS would definitely have 4 sausages, I would have 3 and my two younger kids would have 2. We would all have mash, and onions and gravy. Ommm nom nom! If it makes you feel better, we would also all have a great big pile of veggies too - leeks, broccoli and peas. There's no right or wrong here in my opinion. We eat large portions because we are an active family.

southernbelles · 10/02/2021 19:16

2 each for us, purely to get as many portions out of a pack as possible in the interests of saving money 👎

IAmJackieWeaver · 10/02/2021 19:16

I have no sausage off switch and will eat as many as you put in front of me.

Generally I try and self regulate at three

pinkearedcow · 10/02/2021 19:16

Sausages are processed and usually contain lots of additives, preservatives, etc., not to mention fat

Sigh. I feel bad now for even looking at a sausage, I thought they were a low calorie, low fat wholefood.

LalalalalalaLand123 · 10/02/2021 19:17

The males in my family would definitely eat at least 4 each. I eat 1 to 2. They will also open the fridge and if there are cooked sausages in there they'll eat them for snacks. They're not overweight, they just need a lot of food!

PaddingtonsSister · 10/02/2021 19:18

4 me and girls 6 each hubby and lads No sexism free choice

BlueJag · 10/02/2021 19:19

We have max 3 sausages 97% meat. We have a 5'11 15 year old. I'll serve it with mash, gravy and vegetables. I think it's too much for a 9 year old. If I were you I'll freeze or make another meal a few days after.

FloatsYaBoat · 10/02/2021 19:19

I love sausages. Me and DH will have 4, kids (6 and 3) would have one or two each depending on how they feel.

Asda’s pork chipolatas are heavenly

BackforGood · 10/02/2021 19:25

3

But with the disclaimer it depends what physical exercise you'd done during the day, and what you'd eaten for your other meal etc.

I had sausages, mushrooms and tinned toms tonight and asked to just have two, as I'd overdosed on some lovely bread at lunchtime.

Meltedwellie · 10/02/2021 19:26

1 or 2 in our house but then I don’t have teenage boys. I would probably give them about six each! 🤣

dementedma · 10/02/2021 19:26

Teen DS is 6 foot 2 and can easily eat 4 sausages at a sitting, with mash and peas.
I have two as I’m not mad keen on them

DishingOutDone · 10/02/2021 19:27

Yeah i'm with the cook the lot and have sausage sandwiches the next day. I say eat those sausages OP. I am vegetarian but I wish I could eat a pork sausages so I might be biased. I'd only eat 2 quorn sausages because they are simply not that nice.

BTW do you all know Richmond do pretend sausages and they are almost like the real thing?

drumst1ck · 10/02/2021 19:27

DH has 3 or 4, I have 2 and DD (toddler) has 1

Justa47 · 10/02/2021 19:29

@sadpapercourtesan

Two for ladies three for men and teenage boys over 12. Simple. Or put in a dish and share out one at a time to til people say no .

YouKnowItsTrue · 10/02/2021 19:30

Ooh I’d like 4 as I love sausages but I tend to have 2 or 3 so as not to appear greedy Grin

DH has 3 or 4 and and DD age 11 has the same as me.

Pascha · 10/02/2021 19:31

We start off with 3 for adults, 2 for the children age 10 and 8. At least half the time everyone takes an extra so 4 and 3 really.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 10/02/2021 19:31

Richmond veggie sausages are grim.

Linda McC much nicer. Especially since they’ve ditched the bad palm oil.

crispychicken12 · 10/02/2021 19:32

I have 2-3 but I could easily eat 4 haha

curlymom · 10/02/2021 19:32

People eat more than they used to. Including me. Hence all the diets 😗

SquigglePigs · 10/02/2021 19:34

If we're talking fat sausages (not chipolatas) then I would have 2 and DH would have 3. If we're eating at the same time as DD (2yrs old) she would have half and I may or may not have the extra half. I used to have 3 but decided a while ago to try to reduce the calories so more (homemade) onion gravy for flavour, more veg, fewer sausages, less mash. It's still a lovely treat meal.

Notgoingouttoday · 10/02/2021 19:38

Two each for everyone.
