How many sausages per person with bangers and mash? Are we a greedy family?

Bangers and mash for dinner tonight (I'm having soup because I'm trying to lose weight) and I was wondering what a normal portion looks like to other people? DH and my 16 and 18yo sons will eat at least 4 sausages each with a big pile of mash/peas/gravy. They would eat more sausages if there were more available! I remember when I was a child we were given 2 sausages each, but then I remember being very hungry as a child and meals often weren't generous enough (cup a soup and two slices of dry bread as dinner for a 9yo, for example).

So - how many sausages?

I'd probably plan to eat two, but end up eating three. DCs used to eat one each, (they're 3 and 6). Now they have one and a half each. DH doesn't really like bangers and mash Confused, so he has none!

Frequentlymisunderstood · 10/02/2021 19:03

DH & teen 2 each, I have 1.

3, the "taste the difference" type range. They come in packs of 6 and there's 2 meat eaters

WombatChocolate · 10/02/2021 19:04

What would be the calorie content of 4 quality sausages? Or 3 or 2?

I get most most aren’t calorie counting, but it is just something to be aware of. When you add in The buttery mash which is also high calorie, especially if it’s a big heap, you’re talking about a very calorific meal and the extra sausage really isn’t needed.

But it’s like everything isn’t it.....some people can eat vast amounts of pizza - far more than they need. They enjoy it and they don’t moderate their eating but just have the amount they feel like. It can also be the case with eating generally - if the serving bowl is in the table, people keep eating and have a second helping they don’t really need. If it’s plated up and a decent amount, most people will be satisfied.

I think we all like a bit of pig-out occasionally...fair enough, but it’s when it creeps into all meals and is the norm and people feel short-changed by 2 quality sausages, or even 3, that the balance isn’t probably quite right.

PottedCrab · 10/02/2021 19:05

We have 2 per adult and one for DC but if they want more they can have more. I thought I would be on the greedy side for having 2!

DishedUp · 10/02/2021 19:05

Also how can you say never more? Do people not have days when they are more hungry? Like what if you done a massive bike ride or climbed a mountain? Do your portions never change?

If the portion size was really 2 they'd come in packs of 4. Nothing comes in packs of 3 portions. You buy 2 chicken breasts or 4. 2 portions of salmon, 2 pork chops etc.

MessAllOver · 10/02/2021 19:06

My 3 yo eats one and a half. I eat 2 and a half. DH will eat the rest of the pack but he's a greedy bugger (but annoyingly very thin as he runs 10k 4 times a week). We have cheesy mash with them though and lots of green veg.

Exhausteddog · 10/02/2021 19:07

Unlimited veggies presumably means theres no limit on the amount of vegetables you could have....which for DD (given a choice - which she isnt!) would be none!

DishedUp · 10/02/2021 19:09

@wombatChocolate but if you aren't gaining weight then its completely irrelevant how many calories is in the food you eat. If someone is naturally maintaining a healthy weight its pointless to say their dinner has too many calories because they are obviously eating the right amount for their body and lifestyle.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with having a calorific meal. Calories are necessary to fuel life. Yes if you eat high calorie meals for every single meal then you will probably gain weight, but there's also nothing wrong with accepting you love sausages and mash and so eating plenty, its not like people eating sausage and mash every meal of every day

EternalOptimist7 · 10/02/2021 19:09

DH would eat 4 but I usually give him 3. I have 2 but sneak another one later! DD12 is very fussy but if she deigns to eat them, she’ll have 2. Now I really want bangers & mash. One of my all time favourite meals!

Kazzyhoward · 10/02/2021 19:09

We have 2 sausages. It's enough.

Nohomemadecandles · 10/02/2021 19:10

@Lastbonestanding

Adults 3 each, under 10s 2 each. I don't like giving them more sausages as we have them too often and too much processed meat isn't good for them.
I can't stop thinking about this comment. It makes me chuckle. "No, I don't care if you're still hungry, it's sausages again tomorrow and that's bad for you!"
Newnamefor2021 · 10/02/2021 19:10

I'd have 3, my husband would have 4, kids between 2-4. I'd have a huge pile of mash though 😝

Exhausteddog · 10/02/2021 19:10

@Bingowin
That would be a similar scenario in our house. DD (14) would probably choose to have 1, I would serve 2 , and she would give the 2nd one to DS!(11)

katiemumma20 · 10/02/2021 19:10

2 for me, very occasionally 3. DH has 3 and occasionally 4. We could both easily eat more!

Furries · 10/02/2021 19:10

2 for me, but there’d be a Yorkshire pud (or two) added to the plate! And would be new or roast potatoes for me, mash is vile 🤮

pinkearedcow · 10/02/2021 19:10

I wouldn't eat any Quorn sausages, I'd rather just have the mash and veg. I hate processed pretend meat.

knittingaddict · 10/02/2021 19:10

I have a healthy appetite and am very overweight. I would have two or sometimes 3 sausages max. My husband also has a healthy appetite, but is very slim Envy and would eat the same.

You've actually reminded me of a friend of my mother who was extremely obese (25 stone plus) and the whole family were very large. We went to her house for a meal on one occasion and had sausages and mash. I remember being totally shocked at the portion size and number of sausages she served up. It was at least double what we were given at home. It was over 40 years ago now, so I can't remember the number, but it must have been at least 5 or 6 sausages each. Weird which memories stick.

To be fair though I think it does depend on activity levels. My hobbies are largely low energy, so I could do with eating less. A farmer, for instance, would need considerably more. As long as you are fit and healthy and not overweight, I don't see an issue. Everyone's needs are different.

Comefromaway · 10/02/2021 19:10

4 thin or 3 fat here (less for children).

Tomatobear · 10/02/2021 19:11

We've always had two each. I've never seen anyone eat more than two so I'm surprised by all these answers. Maybe we should have more!! I bloody love sausages.

Kazzyhoward · 10/02/2021 19:11

Calories aren't the only factor for a healthy diet. Sausages are processed and usually contain lots of additives, preservatives, etc., not to mention fat. Weight maintenance isn't the only game in town. You can have high cholesterol, diabetes, etc., without being overweight.

Jeremyironseverything · 10/02/2021 19:11

Three each probably (2x6 pack) unless its a pack of 8, then it would be two. A pack of ten would either be two and a half each if they are nice pork and apple ones, or three for dh and ds and two for me and dd if normal ones which I'm not so keen on.

Boom253 · 10/02/2021 19:12

4 chipolatas each here

WombatChocolate · 10/02/2021 19:12

A pack of six quality high meat content says the lack feeds 3 and gives the nutrition info based on a single sausage and on a 2 sausage portion.

The price of having 4 per person is also a lot....just for the meat element of a meal. If the sausages cost £2.50 per pack and 4 have 4 each, that’s 16 sausages so nearly 3 full packs and £7.50 just for the meat element of a standard weekday meal. Seems a lot to me.

But then again, I think most people have distorted ideas about meat portions and once they’ve got used to a large portion, it’s harder to go back to standard size. Teen boys will clearly keep eating them in you keep bringing them out, as will lots of other people too. It’s partly a question of if we eat wheat we fancy and keep going if we fancy it, or eat what we need, apart from the odd occasion.
