Welcome in ADs. Snuggle up hygge-style 'cause there ain't much going on out there for a while... except rain.

I haven't got a pussy of my own for gratuitous showing off, so I shall pretend to be Dr Evil with Mr Biggleswade Grin

@starfish88

I found that with the church. I tried to get DS christened in the summer when it was allowed and was told they wouldn't do it. I did sort of understand as the vicar was in her 70s but at the same time if you took the church's teachings literally then she was condemning DS to the risk of limbo for her fear of dying and going to heaven. I did wonder how much of it she actually believed in. Certainly wouldn't have been acceptable during any of the previous pandemics.
I think limbo is a Catholic belief? That said, your point about previous pandemics still stands. And yes, if you believe that you're going to heaven when you die, I'm not sure how scared you should be of dying. And if you don't believe you're going to heaven when you die, I'm not sure you really qualify to be a vicar.
starfish88 · 01/02/2021 11:56

Exactly. It reminded me of Father Dougal asking Father Ted 'Heaven, Hell, you don't really believe in all that do you, Ted?'

Although my knowledge of limbo comes mainly from 'the others' so probably not the most knowledgeable source of current church thinking!

I have just been reading that we (the UK) has over 400 million doses of vaccine from various suppliers on order (details on bbc news page). Don't you think this is a lot? I appreciate that people may need revaccinating annually, but even so, that a heck of a lot of vaccine, and it must have an expiry date as well. Do you think Boris is cornering the market?

starfish88 · 01/02/2021 12:11

I think we spread our bets so that even if one or two failed we still had enough. Remember when we were told that most of the vaccines would fail?! I still can't believe how lucky we have got with most of the vaccines working.

I do wonder what will be done with the left overs. I suppose it depends on how often we need to revaccinate and what the use by date is. On another thread there was a discussion about how we don't know how often we will need revaccinating but hopefully it's not a yearly thing for most people. I suppose then we could donate our vaccine to other countries although I imagine that will be easier with the vaccines that don't need such cold storage as Pfizer.

Taswama · 01/02/2021 12:25

They have to appeal to the UK govt because we could put an export ban on the vaccine if we wanted to and we have a contract with AZ that is, frankly, worded better than the one the EU have negotiated.
I'm generally pro EU but in this case decision by committee has not delivered the best outcome.

starfish88 · 01/02/2021 12:45

The article mentions poorer countries though so I assumed it meant countries poorer than the EU which is a separate issue. Although the eurocentric graph is a bit confusing in that case. That's why I thought it was strange to have a UK focus, especially when the UK has contributed so much to covax.

ISaySteadyOn · 01/02/2021 13:12

Did anyone ever try those language learning videos with the big green cuddly creature that ate clocks? The villain was called Corvax Smile.

starfish88 · 01/02/2021 13:16

Muzzy!!! And yes, whenever they mention covax that's who I think of!

justasking111 · 01/02/2021 13:26

@DWPmisery1972

Sorry to hear you had a little weep just, hugs for ya. Flowers every time I see a police care I get the palpitations now... I’m just waiting for my turn to get pulled over and end up on a viral video on fb. Ergh.
Told DIL about police patrols, she said she had noticed them, they do a route round and round and round. Up Victoria Drive, down Marl Lane, down Albert Drive and all offshoots then up and down again. There are only bloody dog walkers and families but because you run into folk you know in this little area, yep you do stop and say hello. Even in masks that is verboten. She said she feels afraid of the police now which considering her family were police going back generations is sobering.
justasking111 · 01/02/2021 13:27

Just a thought with all this lock down how are burglary statistics doing, I must check.

BogRollBOGOF · 01/02/2021 13:34

Still lots of reports of people rummaging through cars around here. The local police seem to have calmed down from fining people over consuming hot chocolate after they were pushed into appologising.

There's been a hint of spring in the air. Bird activity in the wooda is getting more lively and I've heard the woodpeckers today.

justasking111 · 01/02/2021 13:39

Did check we have had 4 burglary/robbery since June, however, violent crime mother of god, 105, now violent crime used to be broken down into domestic and a rough idea of the road given, not any more.

zigaziga · 01/02/2021 13:57

I think we spread our bets so that even if one or two failed we still had enough. Remember when we were told that most of the vaccines would fail?! Yes I think that was it - we were just hoping that at least one the vaccines would work and then we would need ideally 2x U.K. population amount (for initial and booster) but at least enough for the vulnerable.

I feel like there is something I’m missing about vaccines. I’m perfectly happy to get vaccinated and I don’t think there’s any big conspiracy - it will be quite obvious if they do or don’t work. But what I don’t get is we were told that they were all a gamble and hopefully at least 1 of the 7 or 8 being developed would work... and that most trials failed but we could be optimistic that we would have maybe one vaccine by 2021. In fact, they’ve all been an amazing success.
Was it part of the PR to keep us terrified?

ISaySteadyOn · 01/02/2021 14:26

I don't know. I just read this: notesonreading.com/risks-and-harms-the-consequences-of-our-response-to-a-virus

I found it interesting. Would love to know what you all think.

DrRamsesEmerson · 01/02/2021 14:31

Isn't the thinking on Israel that as a small country it'll be a brilliant test case for what happens when the whole adult population has been offered the vaccine? I'm sure I read somewhere that they're providing valuable statistics for the whole world.

BogRollBOGOF · 01/02/2021 14:37

There are vaccines that aren't ready to be approved yet, so there did need to be room for doubt. There are variations in efficacy and practicality too.

I do think there is excessive lack of positivity about current progress, but suspect that's to keep us under the thumb for a couple of extra months.

amicissimma · 01/02/2021 14:52

Congratulations to you all. We've got through January, an achievement in itself!

Re the vaccines, surely it would be helpful for the world to have the information that will come out of the UK regarding the results of vaccinating a lot/most of the population so early and fast, specially as we are using more than one vaccine and trying a different schedule for the second dose.

Iheartmysmart · 01/02/2021 15:10

Oh yes, it’s February isn’t it...time has no meaning at the moment. Which probably annoys the life out of my boss when I forget it’s Monday and am still sat on the sofa at 9.45am when I’m supposed to be working.

I’ve just been on the vaccine thread having a read. I think I’m more scared of the mandatory vaccine people than I ever could be of the anti-vaxxers.

flower11 · 01/02/2021 15:19

Just taken dc for a circuit of the park. So nice to see spring breaking forth!
People are so hungry for interaction now on most of my walks someone stops to chat. Two elderly lady dog walkers chatted to my DC in the park. It may be the only time they get to see another person.

@ISaySteadyOn thanks for the link. I am going to read it properly this evening. Have had a cursory look just now and I agree with much of it.

It reminds me of what one of the very experienced partners in the law firm I trained at said to new trainees every year - when it comes to being professionally negligent, it is not the big stressful/urgent/complicated case that you get stressed about every day that you need to worry about... It is the unrelated stuff that you are going to miss while focusing on the big urgent case. Similar argument made here about Covid and focusing on that to the exclusion of other threats.

BogRollBOGOF · 01/02/2021 15:31

People seemed more smiley in the woods than they've been for a long time.

My pots that I planted up in October have shoots poking up from the bulbs Smile
I knew they'd cheer me up past the new year.

Hello everyone! Catching up on the thread but just wanted to let you all know I’m in hospital, had another x ray and CT and they don’t quite know what’s up with me... I also had a finger up my bum which was my lowest moment yet... mainly because I didn’t even flinch becuase I’m just so passed caring... anyway my back issues have spread so I’m stuck in shitty hospital over night and it smells of horrible hospital food and i can’t stop crying but I’ll be ok :)

Love to all!!!

smallandimperfectlyformed · 01/02/2021 17:50

Oh I am sorry that you have to be in hospital DWPmisery1972 but hope that they can help you with your pain and that you get better soon. Flowers
