Welcome in ADs. Snuggle up hygge-style 'cause there ain't much going on out there for a while... except rain.

I haven't got a pussy of my own for gratuitous showing off, so I shall pretend to be Dr Evil with Mr Biggleswade Grin

Has anyone else noticed Devi Sridhar backtracking on schools?

bakingcupcakes · 31/01/2021 18:50

There was lots of flocking going on in the park this morning. Not so much down by the river this afternoon. We did see lots of bulbs poking through. I recognised the daffodils but I'm not sure what the other thin ones were. I'd never actually been to the river near my house until the first lockdown. The discovery of new local walks is one of the only plus points to 2020.

I've just been 'over there'. I had to leave after reading a suggestion SAGE want us to all stay in until covid is eradicated. If that's the case I'd like to be told so I can do myself in sharpish. Honest to God if this is the best we can hope for (as eradication is impossible) I'd rather not bother.

I do think that some in sage would pursue eradication... But fortunately it is not the ir choice. It is a political decision. Whitty has acknowledged this in public very clearly by saying that we cannot remain in lockdown, it will be for the gov to decide what level of risk is tolerable.

Lord some snippy bitches on MN today, I went onto what I thought would be an innocous thread, jeepers. Lockdown really is affecting some folk worse than others.

I had a little weep today, have not been out except to shop all week, OH the only human being I have spoken to. He was out hunting down something at Halfords. I just got in the car and drove, a police car was cruising in the next road ffs. Went into town drove down the prom. Saw three more police cars in town just driving slowly up and down. My eyes filled up at the thought that we were being watched closely just for walking around on a promenade. It was freezing cold and blowing hard.

@TooManyPlatesInMotion

Hi everyone, was wondering if anyone had managed to unearth a link to the Warwick Uni paper that has been all over the press today (re modelling to avoid a huge third surge of deaths)? I am interested to read it for myself.

Nothing new to report here. Took my eldest out for a walk today. He got very tearful about wanting to go back to school, hang out with friends. All I can do is reassure him and keep saying the same things, try to stay positive for him. It is getting harder though tbh. He is normally a very social, outgoing and funny 10 year old. I feel awful for him.

warwick.ac.uk/fac/cross_fac/zeeman_institute/new_research/combatting_disease/covid19 is it one of them linked here?
2020BogOff · 31/01/2021 20:02

I ventured over to the other place briefly but decided not to post. I think a lot of people are going to struggle with normal social activities after this. God knows how they coped before covid.

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 31/01/2021 20:15

Thank you @CoffeeWithCheese I will have a look. A friend also mentioned that the Daily Telegraph linked to it, and I have a subscription so might find it there if no joy.

Mrsfrumble · 31/01/2021 22:50

I went ‘over there’ for the first time since March, and promptly got stuck into a really unpleasant thread about schools being “too full”. Lots of nasty posts making assumptions about why other people’s children are in school. I get that people are concerned that their children are missing out, and that there’s a “two tier” system happening, but the way to prevent that is by getting all children back to school ASAP, not by taking places away from vulnerable children. FFS Hmm

Mrsfrumble · 31/01/2021 22:53

And I’m sorry to hear about your coccyx @DWPmisery1972. I did mine in last summer when I slipped on a Lego instruction book DS had left on the kitchen floor. It hurt like a bastard, but did eventually sort itself out without medical attention. I hope yours does the same.

MercyBooth · 31/01/2021 23:22

Its the usual race to the bottom @Mrsfrumble

DWPmisery1972 · 01/02/2021 01:26

Thank everyone you’re giving me hope it’ll right itself if it’s own volition... I fell asleep early but arse pain woke me up... if I lay on my front I’m pain free- does this mean I get go stay in bed until it’s over? Grin

DWPmisery1972 · 01/02/2021 01:30

Sorry to hear you had a little weep just, hugs for ya. Flowers every time I see a police care I get the palpitations now... I’m just waiting for my turn to get pulled over and end up on a viral video on fb. Ergh.

I have private health insurance through work and I am so glad because the NHS was terrible for non emergencies before covid and will be even worse now.

I keep seeing that the WHO is trying to pressure the UK to slow down its vaccination campaign as it's so far ahead but why are they not pressuring Israel who have nearly vaccinated half their population? I can see both sides of the argument but it's funny that the UK is singled out now we are finally getting something right.

GarlandaChynoweth · 01/02/2021 07:53

It's Child Mental Health week Hmm. How ironic.

Well it's a variation on the usual lockdown message of "Stay Home! What's so hard about sitting on the sofa watching Netflix???"

Now it's "Stay Home! Lie around on your tits!" Grin

I hope it eases up soon.

Church was excellent and not at all dementory, though a bit sparsely attended - I think the dementor types just aren't going. (I desperately want to write an article for some churchy magazine called something like, "Jesus touched lepers and you should do too," but I'm not sure the impulse is truly helpful.)

rosettesforjill · 01/02/2021 08:41

DM is a vicar and has kept her church closed this lockdown (she has been doing online services throughout). Far from a D but her congregation is so elderly that she was too worried about them to risk it! Hopefully they will mostly have been vaccinated now and she can start thinking about reopening.

Taswama · 01/02/2021 08:53

Presumably because we AZ is UK based rather than Israel based? Also, the quantity of non vulnerable people in the UK is a lot bigger than in Israel.

Curlygirl06 · 01/02/2021 09:52

Morning all! We decided to call the tortoise Indie in the end, she's doing ok, still hiding a lot in her bed as it's all new to her but she's eaten some food so hopefully she'll come out of her shell, so to speak!

To be fair, I know a number of churches that have taken different approaches. All have been informed by concern for their members, attendees, and the community, and I wouldn't want to fault any individual vicar/ minister for what they've done. I am however disappointed with the response of the church as a whole - perhaps particularly the Anglican church.
starfish88 · 01/02/2021 10:25

I found that with the church. I tried to get DS christened in the summer when it was allowed and was told they wouldn't do it. I did sort of understand as the vicar was in her 70s but at the same time if you took the church's teachings literally then she was condemning DS to the risk of limbo for her fear of dying and going to heaven. I did wonder how much of it she actually believed in. Certainly wouldn't have been acceptable during any of the previous pandemics.

The article I saw said it was the UK government rather than AZ or any of the vaccine companies specifically.

www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/world/2021/jan/30/who-urges-britain-to-pause-covid-jabs-after-treating-vulnerable

I wondered if it was because Israel would have ignored them but Britain has a bit more of a reputation for not only following these directives but going above and beyond. I think it's great Israel have done so well so quickly, although obviously with a smaller population than the UK and obviously their data is showing everyone else what we can expect with transmission etc but I just thought it was odd they didn't appeal to either of the countries that are further ahead than the UK. I'm in the other and I am fairly certain they would have told the WHO where they can stick that idea (same place as the new covid tests!)
