Why is drinking in the morning seen as a bad thing?

I don't drink very much, the odd glass of wine if I have a meal out, a glass or 2 of fizz at weddings, Xmas, and a cocktail or two on holiday. If I fancy a drink on a Friday evening, I have one but it's rare...maybe once every couple of months, and I rarely finish a bottle so often end up using it in a jus or casserole. BUT, sometimes I'll just think ooh, a glass of whatever would be nice (in the same way as I think ooh a bit of cake would be nice) and then realise it's 10am. I don't have one as uts the morning and its no big deal, but its just made me think why isnt it socially ok to have the odd one then. (Obvs if its part of a regular/heavy drinking pattern thats different). People smoke early which has a similar 'relaxing' mindset, don't know about drugs as don't use them.

I work nights, so have an occasions had a drink, if I've had a bad shift.

Pukkatea · 19/01/2021 22:07

I think it's because most people drink to the point of being somewhat impaired, after which it is going to be more difficult to go about your day, get stuff done and behave normally rather than not having to worry because you're going to bed.

Pukkatea · 19/01/2021 22:09

Also that once society deemed alcohol an evening thing (probably because of drinking at dinner) drinking outside of the usual times is a sign of not being able to control how much you drink.

I love a bloody mary or gin in brunch, but it tends to be weekends only and even then only as part of a meal. I think people do need to impose rules around drinking otherwise it’s really easy for things to get out of control.

BubblyBarbara · 19/01/2021 22:11

Like morning coitus it shows a lack of restraint for a vice. If you generally live a transgressive lifestyle anyway that’s fine but if virtue is the goal, leave the drinking (and the Other) till a more appropriate time.

AppleKatie · 19/01/2021 22:13

It’s social control. Too much is bad for us long term but more importantly (in this context) in the short term- it impairs ability to make decisions, drive, work etc.. so there is a logical reason for us to not drink in the morning.

This is scaffolded into our cultural norms.

Darker · 19/01/2021 22:14

It's ok occasionally - birthdays, Christmas.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 19/01/2021 22:16

Sex is a vice Grin. Hilarious!

Shaniac · 19/01/2021 22:17

Im not arsed if people do or dont but its probably seen as bad because even a small amount of alcohol can impair you so if you drink in the morning you cant do other things with the day like driving and your more likely to feel tired sooner, thus wasting a day?

PurpleDaisies · 19/01/2021 22:18

When you’re addicted to alcohol, you often get physical withdrawal symptoms in the morning. Those are relieved by having a drink. That’s the reason needing a drink first thing is a bad sign.

Is this a joke? We can't have sex in three morning now?!

Jesus wept. That has GOT to be a wind up.
Daphnise · 19/01/2021 22:20

I'm sure 24 hour drinkers can go to Wetherspoons!

The only people I have known who drink (or used to) in the mornings have been alcoholics- and died of it too.

Squeejit · 19/01/2021 22:20

I’ve never met anyone who frowns upon morning coitus. Is it a vice?

Shamefulcorners · 19/01/2021 22:20

You need to marry in to the royal family op; apparently their lives are punctuated by regular quaffings of gin and dubonnet or champagne. I think they start at lunch time though, but you can legitimately have a wee stirrup cup around 10.30/11.00 am when hunting or a quick swig from the hip flask earlier on if shooting or stalking Grin

Not morning coitus! Heaven forbid!!

ffs just say sex or fuck, not coitus. You been watching to much Big Bang lol

AcornAutumn · 19/01/2021 22:22

Is it seen as a bad thing? It's now completely normal to have a bottomless bucks fizz at brunch etc though I do vaguely recall criticism when that trend came here.

I first saw it in Vegas. My friend had a cocktail at 9am. One guy was basically passed out drunk while his friends ate breakfast but I presume they were up all night.

If you had a bucks fizz at home at 9am, I wouldn't judge 🤷🏻‍♀️

Who has virtue as a goal? Do nuns use MN?
Bluntness100 · 19/01/2021 22:24

Because generally people have to work or look after kids, and you can’t do that if you’re drinking at ten am. Also most people don’t get an urge to drink at ten am, it’s usually something done to relax or socialise wit, once you’re through the day,

Holidays being the exception, because you’re not working, and you are relaxing..

I don't know, a comment like that is unlikely to come from a Big Bag viewer. Though it does sound like Sheldon's mum.
