Why is drinking in the morning seen as a bad thing?

I don't drink very much, the odd glass of wine if I have a meal out, a glass or 2 of fizz at weddings, Xmas, and a cocktail or two on holiday. If I fancy a drink on a Friday evening, I have one but it's rare...maybe once every couple of months, and I rarely finish a bottle so often end up using it in a jus or casserole. BUT, sometimes I'll just think ooh, a glass of whatever would be nice (in the same way as I think ooh a bit of cake would be nice) and then realise it's 10am. I don't have one as uts the morning and its no big deal, but its just made me think why isnt it socially ok to have the odd one then. (Obvs if its part of a regular/heavy drinking pattern thats different). People smoke early which has a similar 'relaxing' mindset, don't know about drugs as don't use them.

Coitus? Is your name Sheldon? Please tell us this is a joke

Anyway back to your question @Downtothelastbottleofwine I know what you mean, it’s probably a good thing that it’s socially unacceptable though 😁

vodkaredbullgirl · 19/01/2021 22:28

As a single parent to adult kids, don't have sex but can have a drink in the morning.

Bluntness100 · 19/01/2021 22:28

Also yes, people who drink in the morning tend to have alcohol problems. They need it. Thr old vodka on the cornflakes thing. Or the alkies down weatherspoons.

Most folks don’t fancy a glass of wine or vodka and coke at ten am on a normal day. Also work, chores, kids, driving, all need to be done.

Because you keep drinking.

Morning coitus stops eventually

Harmarsuperstar · 19/01/2021 22:31

I occasionally have a drink in the morning if I fancy one
I'm definitely not an alcoholic
I only work 3 days a week. If I have something it's usually something sweet like a liquer

PurpleDaisies · 19/01/2021 22:32

Because you keep drinking.

Not necessarily. You can happily have a glass of something with a nice breakfast and stop there.

Bluntness100 · 19/01/2021 22:32

I also agree it’s a good thing it’s not seen as socially acceptable. We have enough of an issue with alcohol in this country without starting to make drinking at ten am the social norm...

Downtothelastbottleofwine · 19/01/2021 22:33

When you’re addicted to alcohol, you often get physical withdrawal symptoms in the morning. Those are relieved by having a drink. That’s the reason needing a drink first thing is a bad sign.

Fair enough, but that wasn't really what I was asking. As for other points, I've never thought it when it's a work day so maybe it's more about the holiday/weekend mentality.

Also, just realised my user name probably isn't the best for this threadConfused

When I have a drink in the morning eg. A Buck’s Fizz on holiday or at Christmas, I’m good for nothing for the rest of the day. So I don’t do it for practicality reasons. I leave the drink til evening when I don’t have much else left to do.

dudsville · 19/01/2021 22:33

It wasn't always I don't think. Reading books from the 30s and 40s they were often offering cocktails to guests whatever time they arrived, or had one themselves I'd they needed to steady their nerves.

ReginaTheEvilQueen · 19/01/2021 22:34

@BubblyBarbara

Like morning coitus it shows a lack of restraint for a vice. If you generally live a transgressive lifestyle anyway that’s fine but if virtue is the goal, leave the drinking (and the Other) till a more appropriate time.
Wtf? So we shouldn't have sex in the mornings? Guess that make me & dh bad people then as we love morning sex
PurpleDaisies · 19/01/2021 22:36

Fair enough, but that wasn't really what I was asking.

The strong association with alcoholism is pretty relevant as to why regular morning drinking is seen as not great though.

Changemaname1 · 19/01/2021 22:36

Morning coitus

Lol. Ok sheldon

FortunesFave · 19/01/2021 22:37

It's bad simply because it impairs you. How can you get about your day effectively if you're even a tiny bit tipsy?

Bluntness100 · 19/01/2021 22:37

Yes it’s generally socially acceptable on holidays..either vacations or Christmas etc.

But most folks have stuff to do,,,driving, chores, kids, work, that drinking early doors is simply not practical or a good idea.

CorianderBee · 19/01/2021 22:37

Usually because people then have to go to work or look after kids etc.

Or else they have 12 hours to then continually drink through.

However I never find it odd if a night shift worker has a glass of wine at 8am as they'll soon be going to bed. Or if you have Buck's Fizz for breakfast/brunch on a weekend.

Narniacalling · 19/01/2021 22:37

I like both sex and drinking in the AM
I don’t do both very often sadly.

Champagne for breakfast and a good fuck is something I wish I could do more regularly.

AcornAutumn · 19/01/2021 22:37

There was a running joke on another thread that I was going to put Amaretto in my porridge. I never actually did it but I'm tempted now 😂

Didn't lots of writers and artists drink in the morning?
CaptainLee · 19/01/2021 22:39

Literally nothing wrong with it as long as you don't have to do anything like driving or childcare that day. It's society that dictates drinking is a lunchtime or evening affair! Bloody Mary anyone?!

That sounds delicious

RosesAndHellebores · 19/01/2021 22:40

I have onlybince drunk at 9am in the morning. A dear friend and I saw our baby girls into their first day at school (older siblings in each case so it was our first taste of freedom for a combined 10/12 years). We went back to hers for coffee an followed it with a bottle of champagne and then a tiny glass each of golden liquer. Our youngest are now 22. Never done it again but it is a seminal memory and life stage and I wish we could do it again but we can't. Dear friend died last year of a beastly disease beginning with "c". Nothing to do with alcohol or hard living.

delilahbucket · 19/01/2021 22:40

Alcohol makes me tired and I therefore rarely drink during the day. The only exception being Christmas day, but beyond cooking, I don't do much else on Christmas day Grin

CosyAcorn · 19/01/2021 22:42

I had a Malibu and coke one morning at about 11. I think that's the earliest I'd had an alcoholic drink outside of bucks fizz at a wedding.

I really just fancied the coconut taste and I can't drink Malibu and coke in the evening because the caffeine keeps me up all night.

It did feel very wrong though, even though I only had one and wasn't leaving the house that day.

sofiaaaaaa · 19/01/2021 22:42

For me, drinking is a social thing and is essentially associated with nights out. I’d only go day drinking on holiday or for a birthday (including a friend’s) etc

I have a full time job (during the day) so doesn’t make sense to be tipsy before/during work.
