Why is drinking in the morning seen as a bad thing?

I don't drink very much, the odd glass of wine if I have a meal out, a glass or 2 of fizz at weddings, Xmas, and a cocktail or two on holiday. If I fancy a drink on a Friday evening, I have one but it's rare...maybe once every couple of months, and I rarely finish a bottle so often end up using it in a jus or casserole. BUT, sometimes I'll just think ooh, a glass of whatever would be nice (in the same way as I think ooh a bit of cake would be nice) and then realise it's 10am. I don't have one as uts the morning and its no big deal, but its just made me think why isnt it socially ok to have the odd one then. (Obvs if its part of a regular/heavy drinking pattern thats different). People smoke early which has a similar 'relaxing' mindset, don't know about drugs as don't use them.

I'm teetotal but I'm aghast someone really thinks morning sex is a bad thing Confused I love morning sex Smile

@Downtothelastbottleofwine I get where your coming from. I come from a big family of drinkers, not alcoholics but people who like to relax and socialise around drink. If I cracked open a can of larger or bottle of wine at 10am their only reaction would be, where’s mine? My family are all grafters, they work hard and they play hard. If I was doing it every morning they may raise an eyebrow and ask me if something is wrong but if I just fancied a drink occasionally no one would think anything of it.

I don’t see how it is any different to having a drink with brunch.

SaltedCarmel · 19/01/2021 23:21

My Grandfather would drink from about 10am until mid afternoon as he would have heartburn if he drank of an evening.

The only people I have known to drink in the morning outside high days and holidays are shift workers, alcoholics or people like you op who aren't that bothered by alcohol in general.
I have drunk less and less the last few years combination of health problems and pandemic as I would normally be a social drinker.
But I made myself a Bailey's coffee Saturday morning as I wasn't driving anywhere and can't drink coffee after 12 if I want to sleep that night.
It was delicious.
That's all I had though, in days gone by the concept of one drink would have boggled the mind so I would not have started early...I think a lot of people who don't stop at one are horrified by the idea of morning drinking because they are automatically thinking more than one.
Morning coitus on the other hand should be mandatory.. especially on Mondays, set you up for the week Smile

I missed the memo - what time is happy hour?

vodkaredbullgirl · 19/01/2021 23:28

9am tomorrow

Hadjab · 19/01/2021 23:28

@BubblyBarbara is definitely on crack

thepeopleversuswork · 19/01/2021 23:29

If you are lucky enough to be able to drink in the morning and stop at one its not a problem.

But most people in this country don't only drink one: so drinking in the morning would write the whole day off.

As has been pointed out upthread its also suggestive that you might need the drink to take the edge off withdrawal.

JustWatchMe · 19/01/2021 23:29

Dh and I quite enjoy a sunny Sunday morning run with the dog which finishes with a pint of lager in the pub garden and a stroll home for an afternoon nap...it’s a lovely waste of a day!

Ameliablue · 19/01/2021 23:31

Because it's more likely you'll need to drive, work etc afterwards if you have a drink in the morning

Minky37 · 19/01/2021 23:32

BubblyBarbara
Like morning coitus it shows a lack of restraint for a vice. If you generally live a transgressive lifestyle anyway that’s fine but if virtue is the goal, leave the drinking (and the Other) till a more appropriate time.
Who has virtue as a goal? Do nuns use MN?

Have I stumbled into ‘Nunsnet’ by accident? Or is this comment just peak Mumsnet? 😂

Surely this is a wind up?

I loved getting home after a long night shift and having my dinner and a glass of wine after dropping the kids off at 8am! Helped me sleep 💤

I think, possibly, it may have been a joke
Chanjer · 19/01/2021 23:49

I love a breakfast beer

Pub breakfast and a pint of beer or two is a great start to a day off

Ginkypig · 19/01/2021 23:51

I don’t drink much normally 1/2 bottle of wine with my meal on a Saturday night. Every few months I have a drink with on a different day
I almost never get drunk and I’ve only ever been properly drunk

very occasionally il fancy a drink and if I’m not working or driving or need to be responsible for anything (I don’t have children at home though) and it happens to be 11 in the morning then I don’t see the problem! I’m not talking lots or often but for example coming up to Christmas I like to have a glass of red wine and eat some minstrels while I wrap presents and if I decide to start wrapping before lunch I don’t see why it’s not ok but I decided to do it at 7pm it would be.

Serin · 19/01/2021 23:51

See, I quite like a nice Bucks fizz, often have one on a Sunday morning if we aren't going out, or if DH has agreed to drive.

Lavanderrose · 19/01/2021 23:53

Because drink driving is illegal and also a lot of jobs wouldn’t like it lol

louisejxxx · 19/01/2021 23:54

I only drink in the morning if on holiday abroad (10am beer by the pool is definitely a thing!) or on special occasions like Xmas, a hen do etc.

JaceLancs · 19/01/2021 23:58

I can’t drink during the day as I would probably doze off!
On holiday a few cocktails round the pool in the afternoon is ok when I’m sunbathing
Normally eat at 7.30/8 so might have a drink with evening meal or sometimes nothing alcoholic then but maybe have a couple of drinks after 9 whilst watching tv etc

Onwednesdayswewearblack · 19/01/2021 23:58

Well, I like a drink as much as the next person, but whatever you drink your body has to process it. So I would rather process it at night when I'm asleep rather than in the day when I've got shit to do. However working a night shift and drinking after is completely different because naturally they will go to sleep soon after.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 19/01/2021 23:59

Babs love you've jumped the shark with that one. Time for a name change to JollyJulie...

What?!?!

Morning sex is a vice?! 😂😂😂
Doesn’t everyone have sex in the morning? 😳 or is that just me?
We would never have sex otherwise!

I think this is probably why I feel ok about my last post because I know for me (unlike a lot of people) it’s not because been drinking the day before it happens very infrequently and it’s highly unlikely if my normal history applies that il be drinking all day or to excess.
