Why is drinking in the morning seen as a bad thing?

I don't drink very much, the odd glass of wine if I have a meal out, a glass or 2 of fizz at weddings, Xmas, and a cocktail or two on holiday. If I fancy a drink on a Friday evening, I have one but it's rare...maybe once every couple of months, and I rarely finish a bottle so often end up using it in a jus or casserole. BUT, sometimes I'll just think ooh, a glass of whatever would be nice (in the same way as I think ooh a bit of cake would be nice) and then realise it's 10am. I don't have one as uts the morning and its no big deal, but its just made me think why isnt it socially ok to have the odd one then. (Obvs if its part of a regular/heavy drinking pattern thats different). People smoke early which has a similar 'relaxing' mindset, don't know about drugs as don't use them.

@BubblyBarbara

Like morning coitus it shows a lack of restraint for a vice. If you generally live a transgressive lifestyle anyway that’s fine but if virtue is the goal, leave the drinking (and the Other) till a more appropriate time.
Cheers Barbara, I needed a good laugh.

@Narniacalling

I like both sex and drinking in the AM I don’t do both very often sadly.

Champagne for breakfast and a good fuck is something I wish I could do more regularly.

Hear hear

A few times in lockdown I had a drink at 3. I had no idea what to do the rest of th day Grin

Interesting thread....I wonder if it’s also to do with not drinking on an empty stomach in the morning?

Diverseduvet · 19/01/2021 22:44

Drinking in the morning suggests you need ' hair of the dog's to get through the day. If you've been up all night and have an early drink before going to bed that seems abit different!

Bluntness100 · 19/01/2021 22:45

Oh I’ve regularly drank early in the day

Holidays. Buck’s Fizz with breakfast, cocktail about eleven am by rhe pool

Christmas, champagne when opening the presents. Buck’s Fizz with breakfast.

Socialising with friends where they/we are staying for the weekend, there has been occasions we have opened Prosecco before noon

Festivals. “Breakfast beer” about eleven.

On a normal day or weekend, it wouldn’t even occur to me. For me, irs holidays, socialising, special occasions.

WeirdlyOdd · 19/01/2021 22:45

I was on a business trip to a country where morning vodka was the done thing. I can't say it was a particularly successful trip, because, well, vodka in the morning...

And I often have to drink at lunchtime when travelling abroad, and then give presentations. Not good. The powerpoint goes all fuzzy and I just want to sleep.

notacooldad · 19/01/2021 22:46

The only people I have known who drink (or used to) in the mornings have been alcoholics- and died of it too.
I know lots of people who would have a drink in the morning at the end if a run of nights shifts. They would get a taxi home and then go to bed.
The night shift worker equivalent of a few beers at the weekend.

Kinneddar · 19/01/2021 22:47

Classing sex as a vice is quite a sad outlook.

justasking111 · 19/01/2021 22:47

Friend works in a restaurant that does the bottomless brunch, he says people really do not drink that much in the day whereas at dinner in the evening they will get absolutely plastered. The bottomless brunch is very profitable. I guess people realise that they have to get through the rest of the day before they can go to bed.

I love a good shag fest in the morning & I’ve also necked a gin as I’ve made the kids breakfast in the morning. Addiction doesn’t care what bloody time of day it is the body and mind just grave it.

😂 what's wrong with morning coitus?
HeyMister · 19/01/2021 22:49

I clock off work at 6am and there one shift that was extremely stressful, I went home and had one alcoholic drink to calm me down. I don't drink regularly at all. I have also gone home and eaten ice cream, just after 6am. Neither is seen acceptable but there is no issue in it, if not done regularly.

BertieBotts · 19/01/2021 22:50

Because it's more associated with being an alcoholic.

Obviously if it's occasional then it's not actually inherently harmful to drink in the morning (!) it's just you're probably not socialising or relaxing at that point in the day, so it seems a bit odd/out of place to drink.

Drinking after a night shift isn't really the same because it's sort of the "evening" for that person.

HerselfIndoors · 19/01/2021 22:51

It’s just so associated with alcoholism, or total dissolution, that it puts me off the thought of it. The only exception is Christmas Day when you can have champagne. Or as a pp said, very special occasions.

This morning I saw rum and raisin hot cross buns in Waitrose. You might have them for breakfast. What’s the world coming to I thought!

Morning coitus
Have I just stumbled on an 1800s version of Mumsnet by accident??

CoronaIsWatching · 19/01/2021 22:52

I just don't have an appetite for alcohol in the mornings, same as most people. Also if I drink in the morning I would feel sluggish and off all the rest of the day, so best avoided.

SleepingStandingUp · 19/01/2021 22:52

Holidays, it's ok once it gets to like 10?30.... But I guess generally it's not convenient to be impaired throughout the day

However this is making me nostalgic for a glass of red wine and an egg butty at 9 am after a night shift

Mydogdoesntlisten · 19/01/2021 22:52

Doesn't your metabolism process alcohol better in the evening? Although I may have made that up.
I'm fond of a drink of an evening, but on the very, very rare occasions I have a drink at lunchtime it wipes me out for the rest of the day (and a small drink at that).
Never tried it in the morning.

Bluntness100 · 19/01/2021 22:53

I think this is socially acceptable though, everyone knows your body clock is on the opposite, it’s no different to anyone else having a drink after work or eating some ice cream.
HerselfIndoors · 19/01/2021 22:54

To be properly 1800s it should be forenoon coitus.

katy1213 · 19/01/2021 22:55

Well, I love a Bloody Mary for breakfast and I'd happily have whisky on my porridge every morning - it doesn't set me off for the day, but one glass of wine sets me off for the evening.

Littleposh · 19/01/2021 22:56

How is sex in a morning inappropriate??

I'm howling
