Why is drinking in the morning seen as a bad thing?

I don't drink very much, the odd glass of wine if I have a meal out, a glass or 2 of fizz at weddings, Xmas, and a cocktail or two on holiday. If I fancy a drink on a Friday evening, I have one but it's rare...maybe once every couple of months, and I rarely finish a bottle so often end up using it in a jus or casserole. BUT, sometimes I'll just think ooh, a glass of whatever would be nice (in the same way as I think ooh a bit of cake would be nice) and then realise it's 10am. I don't have one as uts the morning and its no big deal, but its just made me think why isnt it socially ok to have the odd one then. (Obvs if its part of a regular/heavy drinking pattern thats different). People smoke early which has a similar 'relaxing' mindset, don't know about drugs as don't use them.

@Daphnise

I'm sure 24 hour drinkers can go to Wetherspoons!

The only people I have known who drink (or used to) in the mornings have been alcoholics- and died of it too.

I'd love a 24 hour session in spoons right now 😞

Because it’s linked to alcoholism

Because during the day you’re more likely to need to drive / do other things that alcohol could impair.

Smoking doesn’t give you the same impairment, which is why it isn’t time allocated.

On a personal level, I don’t eat much during the day either. It would be a wrecking ball to the entire day and I’d have a hangover from half a shandy by 1.

A few glasses of wine at 10am would impair you for driving and may impair you from looking after children properly or doing your job. Not advisable. A fag or a quickie in the morning, is ok though!

IME the old boys in spoons mostly go in at 0830 for the bottomless coffee/tea and then stay until afternoon/evening when they drink a couple of pints and go home

Could just be our local of course

I know this because I am one Grin

most people have stuff they need to get on with in the day such as driving somewhere or doing things that you wouldnt want to do after a drink. Drinking in the mornings is often used as a benchmark for when drinking becomes properly problematic, but if its an occasional thing and youre not really a drinker, then I dont think its as big a deal.
Im not a fan of daytime drinking as it makes me sleepy and means i couldnt drive if i wanted to

OH went to Italy for business reasons with an italian, they toured the whole of Italy looking for suppliers. Stopping off in strange towns, he said the cafes in the mornings were full of people having a drink in their coffee to keep warm. He was there in the winter. It is perhaps cultural not to drink in the morning then.

Sex is well known as being the best cure for a hangover. I’ll just leave that there

If thats the case I'd say either the sex or the hangover is very mild!!

Didn't lots of writers and artists drink in the morning?

Writers who had no other job might do if they had a drinking problem. Writers and artists, don't have anything to do except write or create (in books obvs, as most I know can't support themselves on their art). But I think it's a good point that it's not frowned upon for certain people.

People tend not to drink first thing because it's associated with being a drunk OP and not being able to go without. When I was a student, I'd have a can first thing if I was at a festival and I would drink all day. I don't drink now but would on holiday as well. I think it's reserved for times when it doesn't matter what you do and if you have nothing to do.
