Anyone else got or sent a Wilson? Do younger people know the reference?

I've just been chatting to the admin assistant looking after our head office. She says she's alone there all the time, expects that to stay the same for the next 6 weeks and ends up singing at the top of her voice.

So I've bought one of these and am sending it to head office.

but now I'm scared that she's too young to have seen Castaway.....

has anyone else been doing the Wilson thing for a colleague and please please tell me young people will get the reference!

Thanks Alex .The only Wilson I know is Jim's dog in Friday Night Dinner. I've never seen that film (I haven't seen loads of films and rarely get film references).

I have a bit of a history of doing things with the very best of intentions and then being considered "random" (etc). So maybe the dots just wouldn't have joined up - it's a pity to risk disconcerting colleagues

Hopefully someone else will be inspired to send a Wilson to someone they know really well so they can be confident the person will be pleased.

I think I will look out for a good friend I can send a Wilson to.

PS just realised there's a separate order for a ball pump that I haven't cancelled yet - now that really will be random!!!!!

I've just shouted Wiilllsooon at my kids but they think Friday Night Dinner as one of my sons is obsessed with it (I do love it too) We will have to watch Castaway I think.

i was always a bit meh about the ending i know life isnt always happy and turns out fro the best but to find her married to someone else with akid was heartbreaking

Is there a link somewhere that explains the whole thing of 'sending a Wilson'? I know Castaway, I know Wilson, and I can see that you can mail someone a ball that looks like Wilson, but what does sending a Wilson actually mean you're saying to that person?

It was kind of you to think of her but she might appreciate a chat with you and a laugh explaining Wilson to her.

I sort of made it up assuming that as others will have got there long before me given how many people are in "Castaway" situations at the moment.

Wheezy - yes, and I would probably mess up the chat and begin it with lots of "i hope you don't think i'm strange...." apology stuff. So she would end up thinking I'm strange. self fulfilling prophecy and all that.

I might as well face it - I'm just not cool enough to be able to send the office a Wilson and get away with it. Sad but true.
