Anyone else got or sent a Wilson? Do younger people know the reference?

I've just been chatting to the admin assistant looking after our head office. She says she's alone there all the time, expects that to stay the same for the next 6 weeks and ends up singing at the top of her voice.

So I've bought one of these and am sending it to head office.

but now I'm scared that she's too young to have seen Castaway.....

has anyone else been doing the Wilson thing for a colleague and please please tell me young people will get the reference!

ImsorryWilson · 19/01/2021 18:25

On the plus side, the police might return Wilson for company for you and WilsonDog when you take your, er..., mutally agreed early retirement. Grin

Fuck Grin fuck Grin HuggedtheRedwoods.

I’m just 30 and I know what you mean and would jab found it funny.

HaudMaDug · 19/01/2021 18:27

I'm nearing 47 and I know what a Wilson is. At my workplace when we moved into another building (10 years ago) there was one left in the tearoom and as soon as I saw it I shouted Wilsoooooonnnnnnn! The guys I work with looked at me as if I was mad and only in the last couple of weeks that they (at ages 42 and 53) have seen Castaway. Now they say "hello Wilson" when they stick the kettle on.

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 19/01/2021 18:28

@Charlottejbt

Never heard of it. I've read the Lucy Irvine book but not seen the movie (no desire to see Oliver Reed in the nude). But this is some different movie with the same name that everyone else knows well enough to share memes from? Once more I feel totally left behind by pop cilture, and it's certainly not because I'm too young to know what a Wilson is!
Its the Tom Hanks film from 2000.
ImsorryWilson · 19/01/2021 18:28

"there was one left in the tearoom"

with blood or without?

Not a clue. I'm mid-50s.

HaudMaDug · 19/01/2021 18:31

Think it was just paint, its a spray shop. Right colour though Grin

ImsorryWilson · 19/01/2021 18:31

Bit outing, but an old neighbour called his dog Wilson. 😁

@ImsorryWilson

I did take the precaution of checking she'd seen the film (or rather, it came up naturally as she described her weird days at the office - I said it sounded like Castaway and had she seen it).

But don't let that spoil the evident enjoyment of my anticipated professional demise :).

The whole point of your OP was that she might not have seen the film!

Now you’re saying you have already checked she has seen it.

Which is it. You are completely contradicting yourself.

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 19/01/2021 18:35

Omg wilsoooooon!

diddl · 19/01/2021 18:41

I haen't seen the film so wouldn't get it.

I probably wouldn't want a volleyball even if I had!

madroid · 19/01/2021 18:41

@ChikiTIKI
It always bothered me from a child watching that film how quickly his fiance moved on... When he comes back she has at least one child and I can't remember the child's age and his time on the island now but she must have moved on to a new relationship pretty soon. Given that she couldn't be sure if he was dead or alive.,it just seemed quick to me!

My thoughts exactly. There he was stranded on the island for 3? years. Goes through hell with just one thought of returning to her to keep him going.... Gets back and she's married his erstwhile friend Grin

ImsorryWilson · 19/01/2021 18:43

sorry Baxer. i'm sooooorrrrrrrrrrry Baaaaaaaaaaaxxxxxxxxxxxxxxeeeeeer in fact...

I think there's a slight gap between having seen Castaway and "getting" Wilson.
For a start, she might have watched Castaway whilst mumsnetting, that sort of thing.
But you're right it was a bit misleading.

MyGazeboisLeaking · 19/01/2021 18:43

Mmm ... how well do you know her, OP? Will she like it?

I'm 55 and wouldn't know what is was... and wouldn't want it when I found out, either!!

ImsorryWilson · 19/01/2021 18:45

not that well.

Oh sod I'd better cancel the Wilson.

OP posts:
JoanneCofton · 19/01/2021 18:45

I’m early 30’s and I’d get it and absolutely love it.

And YES to @ChikiTIKI and @madroid!!! He was gone for 3 years and her daughter was what, 18months? Maybe even older? She must have moved on within months of him going missing which even if she genuinely thought he wasn’t coming back, surely she’d still be grieving and marrying a dentist would be the last thing on her mind!

ImsorryWilson · 19/01/2021 18:46

I've cancelled the Wilson :(

We're a bit older here in the retirement home, but we call it a Harold.

Sybil has knitted a tea cosy that looks just like him. Oohh it makes us laugh.

Baxer · 19/01/2021 18:51

Sorry but I’m confused, what does this even mean?

“sorry Baxer. i'm sooooorrrrrrrrrrry Baaaaaaaaaaaxxxxxxxxxxxxxxeeeeeer in fact...”

ImsorryWilson · 19/01/2021 18:57

happy to explain if you wish Baxer, let me know.
