Anyone else got or sent a Wilson? Do younger people know the reference?

I've just been chatting to the admin assistant looking after our head office. She says she's alone there all the time, expects that to stay the same for the next 6 weeks and ends up singing at the top of her voice.

So I've bought one of these and am sending it to head office.

but now I'm scared that she's too young to have seen Castaway.....

has anyone else been doing the Wilson thing for a colleague and please please tell me young people will get the reference!

I don’t believe I’ve seen the film(?) though. If I received that ball with no context I would think it was a bit creepy

daisypond · 19/01/2021 17:44

I’m in my mid-50s and have no idea what that would mean. My only thought is Wilson from the TV series House.

GintyMcGinty · 19/01/2021 17:45

I'm 46 but have never seen the film. Once you explained it all I get the reference but if I received this I would be puzzled.

LonelyBlueBauble · 19/01/2021 17:46

My sons are teens and know it because it has been referenced in tv shows so we always look stuff up for them or show them scenes on YouTube. Plus we have immersed them in classic what we consider good films.

I cried in the cinema at Castaway, ah the cinema, that alone makes me want to cry now! My friend has a dog called Wilson (rescue so already named) and every time I want to elongate his name.

HuggedTheRedwoods · 19/01/2021 17:47

It was on one of the regular tv channels again very recently. Didn't intend to watch through, but after a few minutes remembered how good it was and watched it all - and yes, felt the sadness again when Wilson went bobbing off. Wiiilllsssonnn..... Sad

Your colleague might have seen it too but you can always recommend it, they usually repeat films once they are on the list again. That's if she doesn't get a restraining order on you after receiving a blood stained basket ball. Grin

sofiaaaaaa · 19/01/2021 17:47

Yeah with the explanation it is cute - but without context it sort of looks like a bloody handprint! Maybe send her the meme or tiktok that’s apparently doing the rounds (I haven’t seen it)

ineedaholidaynow · 19/01/2021 17:48

Wouldn't get the reference. Am in my 50s but never seen the film

Pandabuzz · 19/01/2021 17:57

I’m 24 and would totally get it!

TheHobbitMum · 19/01/2021 17:59

I've seen Americans send them (lurking on Reddit Grin) and I'd get the joke of I was sent a Wilson and find it hilarious Grin

TheHobbitMum · 19/01/2021 18:00

In my excitement I forgot to add I'm 39 Blush

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 19/01/2021 18:01

@sofiaaaaaa that's because it is meant to be a bloody handprint Grin

I would get it (am 36) as would both DC. (16 and 14)

SoupDragon · 19/01/2021 18:03

You've sent her a basketball with a bloody handprint on it with no explanation...?

ImsorryWilson · 19/01/2021 18:09

"That's if she doesn't get a restraining order on you after receiving a blood stained basket ball."

oh well, at least my career ended for artistic reasons.

On the plus side I have totally got my dog name now. for when I get a dog in my enforced retirement after the restraining order.

I'd be a bit freaked out by that and wonder if you're okay.... especially if I was alone in the office when it arrived!!

I hope you've sent an explanation with it...

RuthW · 19/01/2021 18:13

I'm 52 and haven't a clue what you are on about.

ImsorryWilson · 19/01/2021 18:13

well that's it then.
a full time career posting on mumsnet awaits me.

The film was on tv over Christmas. Great film, love Tom Hanks. Willlllssssoooon!

daisypond · 19/01/2021 18:15

I’ve now looked up the object, and if I was sent that I would be freaked out.

ImsorryWilson · 19/01/2021 18:17

I did take the precaution of checking she'd seen the film (or rather, it came up naturally as she described her weird days at the office - I said it sounded like Castaway and had she seen it).

But don't let that spoil the evident enjoyment of my anticipated professional demise :).

Never heard of it. I've read the Lucy Irvine book but not seen the movie (no desire to see Oliver Reed in the nude). But this is some different movie with the same name that everyone else knows well enough to share memes from? Once more I feel totally left behind by pop cilture, and it's certainly not because I'm too young to know what a Wilson is!

bloodywhitecat · 19/01/2021 18:18

I'm 57 and have no clue what a Wilson is?

reefedsail · 19/01/2021 18:19

Wilsssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssson!

ImsorryWilson · 19/01/2021 18:20

ok, we've got a bigger problem here.

bloody hell whatever next, there'll be people who say "What's Casablanca" soon....
