Anyone else got or sent a Wilson? Do younger people know the reference?

I've just been chatting to the admin assistant looking after our head office. She says she's alone there all the time, expects that to stay the same for the next 6 weeks and ends up singing at the top of her voice.

So I've bought one of these and am sending it to head office.

but now I'm scared that she's too young to have seen Castaway.....

has anyone else been doing the Wilson thing for a colleague and please please tell me young people will get the reference!

@gamerchick

I dont think her moving on so fast is that weird, especially if her husband was his old friend

His dentist.

I have a Wilson obviously.Grin

I dont think they were friends or his dentist you know, because when Chuck thinks he's going to meet his fiance again and her husband comes into the room instead, the husband introduces himself.

But I like to think fate took him to the nice woman in the truck at the crossroads anyway, after her parcel kept him going.

Good thread OP - Had I thought of this during the first lockdown I might have sent a couple of Wilsons myself!

I gave my now DH a Wilson years ago. It's very precious to him. So obviously we'd both get it.

I’m 46 and have no idea what that is.

Yes as his dentist who had done a root canal on him a chunk of time ago.

That would be make me feel worse if I was the only person in an office every single day!

How about sending an actual nice present instead, with a note saying 'I was going to send you a Wilson but thought you'd prefer this'?

Yes I get it

I’d get it (I’m 32) and would think it was brilliant and it would make my day.

I instantly got the Wilson reference. I’m 46.

I referenced Castaway Wilson to my older DC recently they didn't get it thought I was about Friday Night Dinner Wilson, and laughed at me for thinking Tom Hanks played Jim Hmm

not just "a" root canal - the terrible failed root canal that kept him in agony for the first part of his stay on the island.

I feel I need a new thread called "should I cancel the Wilson".

It's not a despatch from Amazon job so it's entirely possible they will send it anyway. Though I suppose in that case I can say I thought better of it if it falls flat.

Hedging one's Wilson bets- such an important part of lockdown.

A double insult. Grin

Indeed. I think it’s a great moment in the film.
Wasn’t so keen on the epilogue though dh thought it was great.
Nice how you never find out what’s in the final package too.

@ImsorryWilson

She's be early 20s.

But they just do 80s culture anyway don't they? That's what seems to happen anyway...

But it's not from the 80s? It was made in 2000. Maybe send a copy of the film as well, then she'll get it.

I want to watch it again now. Haven't thought of Castaway for years.

I wouldn't have cancelled it. I would have just directed her to watch the film if she didn't immediately get the reference.

Kind thought of yours though OP. You sound like someone I'd like to have in my office.

Just send her a link to a clip from the film if she seems bewildered. She'll be delighted you were thinking of her and went to that much effort, even if it does seem a bit random.

So young admin assistant (probably one of lowest salaried on team), lone working and you thoughtfully think of Wilson 🤔.

All my kids would all get that reference. They range from 15 to 30.

I think it’s a great idea OP. I would absolutely love it if someone sent me one, I’m a total film buff and love references like that!

@CaptainMyCaptain Wilson is a volleyball who becomes the stranded Tom Hanks’ only friend during a four year stint on a deserted island. He loves it like a friend. When Wilson floats out to sea Hanks yells the infamous “wilsonnnnnn” and that’s what we are all talking about.
OP wants to send it to someone working alone in an office for company. I think it’s a great idea.
