Anyone else got or sent a Wilson? Do younger people know the reference?

I've just been chatting to the admin assistant looking after our head office. She says she's alone there all the time, expects that to stay the same for the next 6 weeks and ends up singing at the top of her voice.

So I've bought one of these and am sending it to head office.

but now I'm scared that she's too young to have seen Castaway.....

has anyone else been doing the Wilson thing for a colleague and please please tell me young people will get the reference!

70s and not a clue?

PyongyangKipperbang · 19/01/2021 19:03

I dont think her moving on so fast is that weird, especially if her husband was his old friend.

I know of several couples who got together after the best friend/spouse died and the other best friend and widow/er married each other within a year or so of the death. Two couples were in their early thirties and there was no suggestion that there had been an affair in either case but they connected through their joint grief for the spouses that had passed away (one couple had a widow, the other a widower) due to illness.

daisypond · 19/01/2021 19:05

“Castaway” is the Oliver Reed film for me too. I didn’t know there was another one.

Baxer · 19/01/2021 19:05

Thanks for the link. It still doesn’t tell me what you meant. I’ll take you up on the offer of an explanation...

alienbeings · 19/01/2021 19:06

I have zero idea what you are talking about and I'm in my 50s

ImsorryWilson · 19/01/2021 19:10

It was an allusion to a scene in the Tom Hanks film where the main character says I'm sorry followed by a name and does so in an elongated fashion.

That is why a dozen or so people have posted the single word Wilson using extra letters to communicate in writing the elongated way that Hanks said it in the film.

Never heard it before! 59 though..

Baxer · 19/01/2021 19:12

I’ve never seen the movie so didn’t have a clue what you meant. Thank you for the explanation.

Callipygion · 19/01/2021 19:24

Poor Wilson.

Geordieoldgirl · 19/01/2021 19:49

what is a Wilson ???

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 19/01/2021 19:51

I'm guessing we must all be on some sort of concoction of drugs now - so here's my contribution...

It's like when you open a hotel window, just a little bit, not too much now, and they stick their furry little paws through. 👻🐸🥳

user1493494961 · 19/01/2021 19:52

Haven't a clue.

TroysMammy · 19/01/2021 19:54

Castaway was on tv a few weeks ago, she may have seen it.

poshme · 19/01/2021 19:55

I would love someone to send me a Wilson.

I'd probably cry a bit.

Frodont · 19/01/2021 19:55

[quote ImsorryWilson]tried to find Kardashians but got Rebel Wilson.

This was pleasantly daft though:

That really made me laugh

ImsorryWilson · 19/01/2021 19:55

@ChikiTIKI

Haha yes I would get the reference but I am 31 so not that young I suppose.

It always bothered me from a child watching that film how quickly his fiance moved on... When he comes back she has at least one child and I can't remember the child's age and his time on the island now but she must have moved on to a new relationship pretty soon. Given that she couldn't be sure if he was dead or alive.,it just seemed quick to me!

He was gone 5 years, the kid was under 2. How long would you have waited?
gamerchick · 19/01/2021 19:59

His dentist.

I have a Wilson obviously.Grin

PurBal · 19/01/2021 20:01

Wilson!!!!

SacreBleeeurgh · 19/01/2021 20:02

30 and would think this was utterly genius and would hugely appreciate the gesture. Please don’t cancel it! If she hasn’t seen it then she can bloody well just watch Castaway to entertain herself...

BackforGood · 19/01/2021 20:05

Mid 50s and no idea what you were talking about until you have linked and explained.

Looking at the link to the ball - that really is creepy.
I think you've made the right decision to not send it.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 19/01/2021 20:07

@ImsorryWilson

ok, we've got a bigger problem here.

bloody hell whatever next, there'll be people who say "What's Casablanca" soon....

tut tut. will find clip

I once employed one of them ‘youngsters’. She didn’t know who Elvis was. Shock Grin
