A song that was written in 1974 just took my breath away, literally

I went out for a long walk and had Spotify making suggestions. This song came up, never heard it before, and it stopped me on my tracks. I had to slow down as I was crying. This song was written in 1974 and I am 50. How have I not come across this song before? The song by the way is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez. Has this happened to you and what was the song?

If it's not too obscure, 'When love turns to lies' by Chris Rea.

Measure of Me by Amy Ray - first came across it watching The Reluctant Fundamentalist (it was love at first hearing with the song).

Having listened to quite a lot of the playlist, I know quite a lot but have lots of gaps with the more contemporary ones (as I no longer tend to listen to music on the radio).

@MargaretHooper I'm so pleased you enjoyed it too! There are so many other fantastic episodes to listen to as well.

Ah someone has said Bob Dylan is a prick before I could... I'll second that motion

Radiohead. No surprises.
Johnny cash hurt.
Sia breathe me
Joni Mitchell... Just about everything she's written gets to me but. 'river'.
Emmylou Harris here, there and everywhere.

@SummerHouse

Antony and the Johnsons

Hope there's someone
Who'll take care of me
When I die, will I go
Hope there's someone
Who'll set my heart free
Nice to hold, when I'm tired

I was haunted by this. I heard it and I was open mouthed, lump in throat, couldn't believe what I was hearing.

Speaking of Anthony and the...

I fell in love with a dead boy

deedeegee · 25/01/2021 08:40

Antony and the Johnsons.. fistful of love

TodgerStrunk · 25/01/2021 19:42

The Amy Ray version of Romeo and Juilet is amazing

Pinksmyfavoritecolour · 25/01/2021 19:59

Chase and status-end credits, the song my son played lots as a 15 yr old when his grandad passed away, his way of coping. Still makes me cry, his grandad would of been so proud of the man he’s grown to be 10 years on.

shortsaint · 25/01/2021 20:26

Great thread. I have downloaded lots of songs as a result.

Mine is Stornoway's Fuel Up.

Probably nobody knows it. But I heard it walking through a field on a walk on a solo break in Devon and it hit me and I sobbed and sobbed. In a good way!

FirstladyKirkman · 25/01/2021 21:06

Alone again, naturally. Gilbert O'Sullivan 😭

paisley256 · 26/01/2021 00:03

Never Dreamed You'd Leave In Summer - Stevie Wonder.

It's so raw and so beautiful.

Jojoanna · 26/01/2021 07:04

We will ,, Gilbert O Sullivan makes me teary the lyrics remind me of home and childhood and a different time

barkingfly · 26/01/2021 08:11

Jumping on before this fills up-Beach boys Heroes and Villains. Even as a kid I liked the idea that "I've been in this town so long, that back in the city, I've been taken for lost and gone for a long long time."

mofro · 26/01/2021 08:19

Sharlene/ I’ve never been to me

I'd forgotten all about that song - just listened to it and it so pulls at the heart strings. Whatever happened to Gilbert O'Sullivan - he wrote brilliant songs.

@SleepingStandingUp

Spiegel im spiegel - Arvo Part. A piano piece. I heard this years ago on the radio, loved it but missed the name and couldn't find it. Alexa randomly played it the other day so now it's on my most played. It's stunning

Wires by Athlete. Has heard it but suddenly HEARD it one day and it made me sob. I love it.

It's so easy to not hear the words of songs

I thought Wires was OK at first (when I was a teenager) until I realised what it was actually about and now it makes me sob.
IntermittentParps · 26/01/2021 13:58

paisley256, yes, I didn't want it to end.

Would LOVE to have heard him do A Case Of You!

I only managed two of the 21 nights. Did briefly think about selling a kidney or something and going every night... Grin
