A song that was written in 1974 just took my breath away, literally

I went out for a long walk and had Spotify making suggestions. This song came up, never heard it before, and it stopped me on my tracks. I had to slow down as I was crying. This song was written in 1974 and I am 50. How have I not come across this song before? The song by the way is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez. Has this happened to you and what was the song?

Another; Alice Cooper’s version of Only Women Bleed.

TankGirl97 · 19/01/2021 14:24

The Bridge by Dolly Parton. Just as you say, I heard it for the first time recently and it absolutely took my breath away. She's a very talented songwriter.

Wtfdidwedo · 19/01/2021 14:24

@secretrugbyfan got there before me Grin

This is a great thread for song suggestions though, I totally agree with Dance With My Father Again. I can't listen to the words properly without sobbing.

mamas12 · 19/01/2021 14:25

I can’t live, was written by Badfinger Who also wrote No matter what,Baby Blue etc
If you want heartbreak watch the documentary About them
The song can’t listen to is Don’t let him touch me from porgy and Bess

BogRollBOGOF · 19/01/2021 14:26

Baker Street.
One day, I was driving to work having a tough phase and this bit hit me:

You used to think that it was so easy
You used to say that it was so easy
But you're tryin', you're tryin' now
Another year and then you'd be happy
Just one more year and then you'd be happy
But you're cryin', you're cryin' now

I burst into tears, absolutely sobbing.

I was happy the following year.

The Drugs Don’t Work by The Verve reduces me to tears since I lost my mum and dad Sad

CandyLeBonBon · 19/01/2021 14:28

@secretrugbyfan I'm dying 😭😱

NeedWineNow · 19/01/2021 14:29

Morningtown Ride by The Seekers. I can remember my dad singing this to my little brother to get him off to sleep. My brother is nearly 54, and dad has been gone 25 years ago this December but I still can't hear this without filling up.

TheFormidableMrsC · 19/01/2021 14:29

The Living Years. I sob every time I hear it. It has brought a tear to my eye just typing this 🙄 #menopause

secretrugbyfan · 19/01/2021 14:29

Brave by The Shires.......gets me every time.

Also, with no lyrics but just because of what the song reminds me of ....the theme to Schindler's List by John Williams.

I saw Nicola Benedetti perform it at the RAH, I was in bits!

Maxsaidno · 19/01/2021 14:30

Birds - Neil Young 🖤

Cissyandflora · 19/01/2021 14:30

Jesse by Carly Simon. It was really big in Australia 1981. Not really known in U.K. I have the original single.

This is a brilliant thread. I’m a bit of a muso. I’ve got so many to add but I’m sad even thinking about it!

queenrollo · 19/01/2021 14:33

@Gilead oh yes to Spiegel im Spiegel - the first time I heard that I sobbed. I'd been going through a really strange time and for some reason that piece of music just unlocked all this emotion inside me. I love to listen to it now, I find it a really comforting piece.

@secretrugbyfan I'd forgotten about that video....i'm off for a good chuckle...

magicstar1 · 19/01/2021 14:33

Pieces of my Life by Elvis.

It sounds so sad and full of regret. Beautiful song.

Redannie118 · 19/01/2021 14:34

Runaway train by Soul Asylum. If youve ever been at a really low ebb its almost impossible to listen to. That and the Ballad of Lucy Jordan. I first heard that song15 years ago and trapped in a abusive marriage. I think i sobbed for about 2 hours the first time i heard it.

PeaceLoveAndCandy · 19/01/2021 14:34

Hurt by Johnny Cash used to make me bowl too. I'm over that one now. I need to listen to Diamonds & Rust at least a thousand times in order to stop crying when I hear it. I am intrigued by some of the suggestions in this thread. It just goes to show how personal these things are.

Listening to diamonds and rust just now to see if I know it..... think it's new to me.

Love me - Colin raye, makes me sob, a lot. I only ever heard it in the first place on holiday, someone singing and playing the guitar in a restaurant- took my breath away.

Garth Brooks: if tomorrow never comes

Wtfdidwedo · 19/01/2021 14:37

Also a little less refined, but Yellowcard - Believe gets me every time because it was written about the firefighters during 9/11. There's an acoustic version as well.

sausagepastapot · 19/01/2021 14:37

I can't believe it, but...

Justin Bieber, Anyone.

I cried my heart out in the car to it the other day.

Pinksmyfavoritecolour · 19/01/2021 14:37

I was the same with athlete wires when I saw it used in the pampers advert, never taken any notice of the lyrics until then, I sobbed at that advert and the song.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 19/01/2021 14:40

@Cissyandflora. In NZ too. Funnily enough I played it the other day Right back to the relationship I was in then. Sweet sorrow.

PeaceLoveAndCandy · 19/01/2021 14:40

@Maxsaidno, have you heard Linda Ronstadt's version? It's beautiful.

Amy Macdonald. ..road to home :

Now I must say goodbye
Keep telling myself now don't you cry
But I'm here where I belong
I'll see you soon, it won't be long
I'll see you soon, it won't be long
I'll see you soon
It won't be long

heard in the car after my dad had just passed.

midlifecrash · 19/01/2021 14:42
