A song that was written in 1974 just took my breath away, literally

I went out for a long walk and had Spotify making suggestions. This song came up, never heard it before, and it stopped me on my tracks. I had to slow down as I was crying. This song was written in 1974 and I am 50. How have I not come across this song before? The song by the way is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez. Has this happened to you and what was the song?

Fix you - Coldplay. I can't sing it without my voice going, and sometimes have to turn it off. I listen in silence with tears rolling down my face.
Seasons in the sun
My bonnie lies over the ocean - we used to sing this to my kids when they were babies every night. Then my H left v suddenly and I couldn't sing it at all anymore. Still can't and that was years ago now.

Prince - Sometimes it Snows in April
He did a long piano version of this at one of the 21 nights at the O2. Spellbinding.

@KaliforniaDreamz

Romeo and Juliet DIre Straits Edge of Seventeen Stevie Nicks Carey Joni Mitchel Leave Right Now Will Young (to the PP who mentioned this Will young track - the video is brilliant if u grew up n the 70s.)
You just reminded me of The Killers version of Romeo & Juliet - another great one.

I just cannot abide Coldplay. They maybe one had something - but completely sold out to commercialism and fame. Good music should be about honesty. It’s about expressing emotion through music as your best means. Once you make music for fame/money it loses its integrity. This is why Coldplay are very shit.

@PeaceLoveAndCandy

I reckon Nick Cave has been mentioned the most here
Peaceloveandcandy Yes definitely. Nick Cave is so good. I've also noticed Athlete's Wires mentioned a few times. That's an amazing song. Also Nimrod and Spiegel in Spiegel (not sure if I've spelt that right!) which are both incredible. And the wonderful Kate Bush. So many good songs on this thread. I'm discovering new music too. New to Mumsnet and I love it!

Ooh bet that was mesmerising. I was there for 3 nights of the 21 and count myself so very lucky.
Saw him at The Roundhouse where he did Joni's A Case Of You and we were all in a complete stunned silence....sigh!

Thankyou so much to the people who have added to the Spotify playlist after I made it collaborative.

Unfortunately 12 hours of songs were deleted off too (hopefully by mistake...) so I had to remove the collaboration function, but it’s public still so you can listen to it here (just can’t edit anymore):

open.spotify.com/playlist/2qBJCpQPanamihhTrVNhPr?si=6_ZleIBWT9i-yiuGlLsrNA

I’ve been back through half the thread to re add the songs and will keep going but if you can’t see yours on the playlist please PM me to add!

tothesea · 22/01/2021 23:49

Ha someone’s removed the songs I put on the playlist...obviously no taste in music.

tothesea · 22/01/2021 23:51

Oops cross post thanks for all your hard work with this poirotsmisslemon

PoirotsMissLemon · 22/01/2021 23:51

@tothesea let me know which or where to find your post and I’ll add back in! I was so pissed off l when I looked tonight and saw that. Why can’t we have nice collaborative things Hmm

tothesea · 23/01/2021 00:07

I know ..never mind it’s still an amazing playlist!

@PeaceLoveAndCandy - oh my goodness! I read your thread title and my thought was "Diamonds and Rust", simply because it had that effect on me too. I cried the first few times I heard it. I play it occasionally (always several times) and it takes me back to the 70s when I was a child - It makes me think about my parents' generation and how they were young and in the throes of parenthood in 1974. It makes me realise how fast time has passed as our parents are old now. Nothing to do with the song's meaning - it evokes a time which has gone and Baez is a goddess! Sometimes, I think I'd like it played at my funeral but wonder if it's too cheesy 🙂 - I love it though (Disclaimer:I'm one of those weird people who is ok with considering that and will plan mine when I retire).
It may have been mentioned (I don't have time to work through the whole thread) but another song which had a similar effect on me recently was Annie Lennox with the London City Voices singing Dido's Lament 💙 - just too much! Take care
