I went out for a long walk and had Spotify making suggestions. This song came up, never heard it before, and it stopped me on my tracks. I had to slow down as I was crying. This song was written in 1974 and I am 50. How have I not come across this song before? The song by the way is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez. Has this happened to you and what was the song?

Jeff Buckley - Forget Her. Just so raw and sexy yet sad at the same time, it's definitely my favourite by him.
Everybody Here Wants You - Also by Jeff Buckley.

Beautiful song by Benfolds - Luckiest. Gets me every time. 😭

I know this thread is about music but have you read this poem by Carol Ann Duffy inspired by Hillsborough, the last line chokes me up every time.

Jealous of the angels gives me chills

Here is a clearer version of the Carol Ann Duffy poem Hillsborough if anyone's interested, the other was bit blurry.

I've got LOADS

Love at the 5 and Dime - Nancy Griffith
Hard Candy Christmas - Dolly Parton (the best little whorehouse version is good but I prefer Dolly on her own)
Tears in Heaven - Clapton
Talk tonight - Oasis
Everyday Hurts - sad Cafe
A woman's work - Kate bush
So in love with you - Texas
In my life - The Beatles (played this at my mums funeral in 2017, poignant words)
Seasons in the sun - Terry Jacks
Honey - Bobby Goldsboro (sobbing at this story)

@Cissyandflora
I love Carly Simon's Jesse,
I presume it's about James Taylor her ex husband ( (Jesse) James Taylor.

I also love Harry Chapin's Cats in the Cradle @Whattgeduck

Emmylou Harris ( amazing voice ), Linda Ronstadt and Dolly Parton do a version of Neil Young's After the Goldrush - brilliant.

I have a copy of Nilson's Without You.
I feel guilty, someone gave me their record and I never gave it back Blush

Wow - How I wish I could've been there in 2011 to see Prince in L.A - sounded amazing, just wow!

MWestie · 23/01/2021 22:51

@notapizzaeater I'm so very sorry about your DH. I'm thinking of you.

Nat6999 · 23/01/2021 23:54

Paisley256 I think I've seen that poem before, I'm from Sheffield & if it hadn't been for the touts wanting too much money for the tickets & me deciding I would rather spend that money on buying clothes that afternoon would have been on Leppings Lane to watch the match just like I was the year before. A couple of the lads who I went to buy tickets with were there & only escaped in to the upper stand.

Durtyblurty · 24/01/2021 00:22

I remember Kurt Cobain once saying that he thought Seasons in the Sun was the saddest song in the world.
I just heard Andrew Gold's Lonely Boy on the radio & had to come to this thread. It's fucking HEART WRENCHING!

Thank God they escaped. I was only a kid when it happened but remember us all crying when it was on the news, even my granda which I'd never seen before.

It's probably an age thing, Kurt Cobain was born in the same month as me so would also have been the right age to understand the meaning of death but not old enough to sneer at the schmaltzy, over-dramatic lyrics. Hard to believe that he would be about to turn 54 if he was still alive.

Luther Vandross dance with my father
Bee gees how deep is your love

Catscatsandmorecats · 24/01/2021 04:12

Thank you @PeaceLoveAndCandy - I can't sleep and this thread has me in happy tears.

I had the same experience with the JCB song by Nizlopi the other day, so odd and so out of the blue but I just sobbed. I think having my own small boy at home from school made the sentiment hit home.

Also Ara Batur by Sigur Ros floors me, I find that whole album and the album Takk can fill my heart, leave me sobbing or both.

And @dementedma yes to White Wine in the Sun, this year especially, my grandad passed away, and we missed out on handing my new baby niece round like a puppy at a primary school. In November 2019 we saw Tim play it live and I sobbed with a heart full of love. In the run up to this Christmas I sobbed listening to it for what we were missing.

TheWelshposter · 24/01/2021 07:04

The song from Home Alone, Somewhere in my Memory. It hits me like a wall, emotions every time, even if it's not Christmas.

PurpleFlower1983 · 24/01/2021 07:45

I thought you would be talking about The Woman’s Work when I read the thread title and I see a few have mentioned it. I’ll listen to yours too.

PurpleFlower1983 · 24/01/2021 07:45

Oh and Dance With My Father!

Lampzade · 24/01/2021 08:50

@SleepingStandingUp

Letter to Heaven by Dolly Parton. We listened to my Dad's old albums alot as kids (sshhhhh, don't tell) bit this one always stuck with me
Agree with this Also - In the Ghetto
Lampzade · 24/01/2021 08:58

Also Coat of Many Colors - Dolly Parton
Love that song

Percyprod · 24/01/2021 09:15

The Welsh song "Myfanwy", it makes me cry every time, so sad.

doloresclaiborne · 24/01/2021 10:22

LP - Lost on you. I love her voice

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 24/01/2021 10:39

I see there's already one Richard Hawley song on the playlist but for me Cole's Corner is his best song ever (and the one that introduced me to his music).

StepOutOfLine · 24/01/2021 11:13

Westlife (and I'm not even faintly embarrassed) I'll See You Again. Live version, on Youtube. Four grown men with tears in their eyes.

MargaretHooper · 24/01/2021 12:08

@MWestie Just listened to the Soul Music episode on Sunshine on Leith , and am wiping away the tears. Moving and uplifting. Thanks for that link.
