A song that was written in 1974 just took my breath away, literally

I went out for a long walk and had Spotify making suggestions. This song came up, never heard it before, and it stopped me on my tracks. I had to slow down as I was crying. This song was written in 1974 and I am 50. How have I not come across this song before? The song by the way is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez. Has this happened to you and what was the song?

@Benjispruce2

Chance by Big Country doesn’t make me cry but is melancholic and always gives me a chill. Great guitar and voice.
Chance by Big Country is one of my favourite songs of all time.

I'm just adding all these to my spotify "Weepfile" playlist. I started it in 2010 on the back of a Mumsnet thread similar to this one, it's been going 11 years, and the funny (and perfect) thing is that so many of the songs have stood the test of time, and are already there, but I always discover so many new ones.

Slipping Through My Fingers is probably the one song on the planet I can't listen to. Daughters....

Every year, when my final year kids leave, I make a video of all their photos....their parents send me photos of them as babies and little kids, then I add all the school project things. Same soundtrack every year:
Perfect Day- Lou Reed
I lived- One Republic
We Are Young- Fun
These Are the Days of Our Lives- Queen
Good Riddance (Time of Our Lives) Green Day

And so far so good...the last three I always use are
See You Again Wiz Khalifa
(it's been a long day without you my friend, and I'll tell you all about it when I see you again)
I hope you meet again by the Saw Doctors
and We Wish You Well by Whitesnake.

By which point I am a howling wreck even if they aren't. (they always are though) .

Anything about children growing and leaving gets me - even in TV ads

'When I Grow Up' from The Matilda musical is the worst, ever since my DD sang it in a school leavers production.
The kids were all singing and beaming but the parents were a soggy, snotty mess. I think it's the childish optimism that gets to me as if everything will be better when you're older. Spoiler alert kids - it won't!

Prince - Sometimes it Snows in April.

EffIt · 21/01/2021 17:25

@paisley256

Prince - Sometimes it Snows in April.
Yes especially live versions.

Mine are:
Prince - June from one of his more recent albums is quite stunning and dreamlike, and a live version of The Love We Make that he did in LA in 2011. Amazing!
Fleetwood Mac - Landslide

Susan1961 · 21/01/2021 17:52

Unfinished Symphony Massive Attack, Gypsy Stevie Nicks, Layla Clapton, Captain Fantastic Elton, Porcelain Moby.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 21/01/2021 18:09

Another one I've just thought of is " the climb" Joe Mcelderberry from 2009
My DH suddenly left on Christmas Day
I was already struggling with severe depression and I have CP anyway
DS1 played it and said " this is your song, Mum" I still can't listen to it!

dementedma · 21/01/2021 20:13

Great play list. Lots of these are new to me

Nobbynobbsknob · 21/01/2021 20:20

I say a little prayer for you by Aretha Franklin is what I sang to my first child when I was pregnant. It still makes me cry and she likes it too.

Also Everybody needs somebody' from the Blues Brothers which reminds me of a particular friend who I loved.

Mckmck123 · 21/01/2021 20:22

I’m losing you by Paul carrack

Tzimi · 21/01/2021 20:55

@PeaceLoveAndCandy Just listened to this song on YouTube. I agree, it's lovely!

sparkli · 21/01/2021 21:13

@StepOutOfLine my kids’ school use Green Day Good Riddance during a montage of the 6th year leavers antics from the final year at Prize giving each year. I am always a bit relieved to see others around me sobbing when it’s played, too. I can’t listen to it without crying.

Sunshine on Leith always gets me. The lyrics ‘while the Chief puts sunshine on Leith, I will be with you’ combined with the harmonies and soaring chords hits me right in the heart.

BigDecisionsLittleTime · 21/01/2021 21:30

Lovely thread!

Songs that pull on my heartstrings are Songbird by Fleetwood Mac and Case of You by Joni Mitchell (original version from Blue album). Also Both Sides Now by Joni too.

Not so much a tear jerker but Candy by Paulo Nuttini is very sexy, that build up at the end... Goosebumps of the good kind.Wink

QueenoftheAir · 21/01/2021 21:43

I can’t Live if Living is Without You by Harry Nielsen

It's called
"Without You" by Harry Nilsson from the Nilsson Schmilsson album
from 1972 and still as fresh as yesterday

Ach the musical poverty of the younger generation ... Grin

QueenoftheAir · 21/01/2021 21:43

Perfect Day- Lou Reed

you know that's about heroin addiction ...?

wellthatsunusual · 21/01/2021 21:53

@QueenoftheAir

Perfect Day- Lou Reed

you know that's about heroin addiction ...?

And that We Are Young is about getting absolutely wasted...
KennethBakeOff · 21/01/2021 21:56

Souvenir - OMD (original or Moby version) beautiful song

Polaroid Picture - Frank Turner (especially the Songbook version) if you get the chance to be in a crowd at one of his gigs and do the audience singalong you will get this tenfold.

Dream of the Drowned Submariner - Mark Knopfler, can have me bawling if I'm away from my children

Inastatus · 21/01/2021 22:35

Bring him home from Les Mis 😭

Whatdoyoudowhendemocracyfails · 21/01/2021 22:39

Bread and Roses. Heard it for the first time in the film ‘Pride.’ Just so powerful and moving.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 21/01/2021 22:44

This song is beautiful. Thanks so much!!!

Proseccoagain · 21/01/2021 22:44

Bruce Springsteen's 'If I should fall behind, wait for me'. Especially poignant since DH died.

And I remember many years ago hearing Roy Orbison's 'I drove all night', and thought why have I never heard this before?

StormyLovesOdd · 21/01/2021 22:56

Mine is Circle Game by Pink, I can't listen to it without crying. My Dad past away last year and my Mum is old and starting to have lots of Heath struggles, it has me in bits every time I hear it.

paisley256 · 21/01/2021 23:07

I'll Be Seeing You - the Tony Bennett version. We played it at my nans funeral "and I'll be looking at the moon but I'll be seeing you". Think Vera Lynn did it 1st.

tararabumdeay · 21/01/2021 23:54

I have to admit the song that makes me cry every time, and I mean song as in not music (Nimrod) or words (Stange Meeting), is Teach Your Children Well.

Feed them on your dreams.

GabsAlot · 22/01/2021 00:27

@IrishNinja

Theme from Schindlers List - just make me think of girl in the red coat, gets me everytime. Con te Partiro Andrea Bocelli - played at moms funeral, just beautiful. Something about his voice that makes my soul soar. Hurt Christina Aguilera makes me think of mom and dad and all the things I wish I'd said The Drugs Don't Work The Verve makes me think of moms cancer. Very literal take on the song but it was very true. Rule The World Take That. I used to sing this to my belly when I was pregnant. I'd had a few miscarriages, and was listening to this when I felt my first kick. It became our fight song.

I blart a lot BTW Grin

sorry to tag aswell @irishninja but i lost my mum too to cancer and that song gets me everytime also hurt
mammmamia · 22/01/2021 00:32

Love this thread, thank you

Mine are
Teardrop by Massive Attack
Strange and Beautiful by Aqualung. I have to avoid listening to this one because it gets stuck in my head for days and makes me feel quite melancholy!
She Keeps me Warm by Mary Lambert. Love this one, I love her voice and I find her so beautiful as well.
