A song that was written in 1974 just took my breath away, literally

I went out for a long walk and had Spotify making suggestions. This song came up, never heard it before, and it stopped me on my tracks. I had to slow down as I was crying. This song was written in 1974 and I am 50. How have I not come across this song before? The song by the way is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez. Has this happened to you and what was the song?

Graceland - Paul Simon

She comes back to tell me she’s gone
As if I didn’t know that
As if I didn’t know my own bed
As if I’d never notice
The way she brushed her hair from
Her forehead and she said, “Losing love
Is like a window in your heart
Everybody sees you’re blown apart
Everybody sees the wind blow”

rosegoldwatcher · 23/01/2021 11:54

Not a song but a piece of classical music.

A few minutes ago I heard it on an advert for the work of the Macmillan Cancer Trust. A little googling later I found it.

Spring 1 by Max Richter. It is part of his recomposition of Vivaldi's Four Seasons

Right now I am listening to the full version on Youtube with very leaky eyes.

GabsAlot · 23/01/2021 17:20

@PoirotsMissLemon

Thankyou so much to the people who have added to the Spotify playlist after I made it collaborative.

Unfortunately 12 hours of songs were deleted off too (hopefully by mistake...) so I had to remove the collaboration function, but it’s public still so you can listen to it here (just can’t edit anymore):

open.spotify.com/playlist/2qBJCpQPanamihhTrVNhPr?si=6_ZleIBWT9i-yiuGlLsrNA

I’ve been back through half the thread to re add the songs and will keep going but if you can’t see yours on the playlist please PM me to add!

thanks for doing this @PoirotsMissLemon

can you put christina aguilera hurt on please

Inastatus · 23/01/2021 17:29

@PoirotsMissLemon - wow, amazing playlist! Thank you so much for all your hard work.

Ddot · 23/01/2021 18:13

Did anyone listen to Anthony and the johnsons. A bit marmite but I love his voice.

AndThenTheDayBecomesTheNight · 23/01/2021 18:56

Car Crash by the Candyskins
Le Badinage by Marin Marais

AndThenTheDayBecomesTheNight · 23/01/2021 19:05

And: Set the Fire to the Third Bar by Snow Patrol.

Raahh · 23/01/2021 19:13

Years ago, I saw Will Young at a festival on tv performing a version of 'Careful' by Horse McDonald. I had forgotten all about the original (Will's version isn't bad to be fair Grin). I remembered the Horse video so vividly, and it brought back memories of being in my late teens. She has such an amazing voice.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 23/01/2021 19:35

I'm listening to your playlist on Spotify PeaceLoveandCandy and enjoying it (not crying ... yet).

MargaretHooper · 23/01/2021 19:39

Another "Sunshine on Leith" sobber. I remember it being played on the stage at Leith Gala one year. It was a lovely hot, sunny day and a drunken bam was having a wee dance to himself off the left of the stage. It was so Leith it made me well up.

PoirotsMissLemon · 23/01/2021 20:01

Add @GabsAlot and thanks @Inastatus

Set The Fire To The Third Bar - love that song - added @AndThenTheDayBecomesTheNight along with everything on this page 👍🏻

MWestie · 23/01/2021 20:06

What an absolutely fantastic thread.

For those who said Sunshine on Leith, have you listened to the Soul Music episode on BBC Sounds about it?

It's wonderful, as pretty much all the Soul Music episodes are.

In case you don't know if it, each episode concentrates on a different song/piece of music with personal contributions that can just break your heart. They're superb radio.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 23/01/2021 20:07

The one that always used to make me cry was the 70s version of Season in the Sun. More recently Memories by Maroon 5, but only really when I see the video as he looks so sad.

Here's the Sunshine on Leith link if anybody's interested.

Benjispruce2 · 23/01/2021 20:10

Omg @BlackAmericanoNoSugar that’s just given me a jolt. I was a child of the 70s and I remember feeling in the verge of tears on the backseat of my parent’s Cortina listening to that!

Benjispruce2 · 23/01/2021 20:11

On not in

MargaretHooper · 23/01/2021 20:31

@MWestie - thanks for that link. I'll definitely have a listen!

Inastatus · 23/01/2021 20:37

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar - oh yes, ‘Seasons in the Sun’ 😢

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 23/01/2021 20:45

Thank you for doing the playlist - my kind of listening. Some fab songs on there (I was lucky enough to see Jeff Buckley sing Hallelujah live, not long before his life was cut tragically short Sad).

TodgerStrunk · 23/01/2021 20:46

And another one:

Definitely first love - 1991 Grin

Every time we touch I lose another layer of skin
Every name you drop you stop my heart from beating
Everything I used to know you have made me doubt
You've never been hungry until you've tasted regret
And I almost killed myself trying to make myself forget
But you're the taste that I can't wash from my mouth

Nat6999 · 23/01/2021 20:50

Pip&mum Ferry Cross the Mersey was the appeal song for the Hillsborough disaster. Also look on YouTube at the video done in Liverpool of You'll never walk alone or the ones of Gerry Marsden singing it at Anfield for the Hillsborough disaster Anniversaries it makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

MWestie · 23/01/2021 21:08

@MargaretHooper I hope you like it! Soul Music is like Desert Island Discs, such a treasure trove.

I usually listen to a new episode if I manage to escape the house for a proper fast walk, though I think this thread's Spotify playlist is my next listen Smile

BobbaMom · 23/01/2021 21:17

Great thread! Anyone heard "wonderful life" by Alter Bridge? Fantastic band, Myles Kennedy has an amazing voice. This song literally stopped me in my tracks when I first heard it...
What a wonderful life,
For as long as you've been at my side,
And I want you to know,
I'll miss you so,
And though our days come to an end,
No, I'll never love like this again,
What a wonderful life my friend.
At the time we had just lost our beloved dog and I sobbed like a baby.

tothesea · 23/01/2021 21:30

I’ve always sung songs from my youth to DS2 at bedtime. He asked me to stop singing Seasons In The Sun, it was too sad bless him. The other one he found too sad was Precious by Depeche Mode which is pretty heartbreaking to be fair. I do sing cheery ones too... honest!
