A song that was written in 1974 just took my breath away, literally

I went out for a long walk and had Spotify making suggestions. This song came up, never heard it before, and it stopped me on my tracks. I had to slow down as I was crying. This song was written in 1974 and I am 50. How have I not come across this song before? The song by the way is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez. Has this happened to you and what was the song?

This is my first ever post on Mumsnet and I'm afraid this list is going to be pretty long! There are so many songs that move me and turn me into a quivering wreck and the following is just a few of the many! I couldn't manage to be succinct! Here goes:

Debby Boone - You Light up my Life
John Miles - Music
The Moody Blues - Nights in White Satin
Tears for Fears - Suffer the Children
The Beloved - Deliver Me
Radiohead - Fake Plastic Trees
Richard Hawley - Oh My Love
DMA's - The End
Damien Rice - The Blower's Daughter
Max Richter - On the Nature of Daylight
28 Days Later Theme
Jamin Winans - John's Walk
Hans Zimmer Time
Genesis - Follow You Follow Me
Athlete - Wires
Michelle Pfeiffer - Never Forget (From Murder on the Orient Express)

'MY OLD MAN's A DUSTMAN'

Guess what my Grandad did for a living ?

Captured him perfectly, Loved his job Loved his family, totally un reconstructed.

When I first heard this, it stopped me dead in my tracks.
My dad knew the track, but had never thought to share it with the family (Sis and I )

I know Perfect Day is about drug use, but it's still a moving song, if you take the lyrics as you wish. There was a video of it years ago with many different singers, and Elton's face when he sang " and then home...." always got to me.

Clawdy · 22/01/2021 08:51

And Lou has always said it's really a love song, and nothing more.

the80sweregreat · 22/01/2021 08:58

Wish you were here by Pink Floyd.
Follow you follow me by Genesis.
Nimrod as a piece of music makes me cry every single time.
My way.
Abide with me.

Fix you by Coldplay. My DC was born disabled when this was playing. Kills me

samanthawashington · 22/01/2021 09:38

First time ever, I saw your face is so beautiful, by Roberta flax

the80sweregreat · 22/01/2021 10:00

Neilson song is so sad as is anything sung by Joni Mitchell. What a voice.

Queenofcrime · 22/01/2021 10:07

@MargotsBumpyNight

This is so embarrassing but here goes Blush

There's a bedtime song on Cbeebies featuring Tee and Mo and I have no idea why but it makes me weep every time. I think it reminds me of that first baby love; when you're overwhelmed, bewildered, exhausted in that baby bubble. It just gets me every time.

Sorry for lowering the tone.. I'll see myself out
shuffles off

The theme tune from Balamory. Reminds me of those innocent pre-school years.

@KennethBakeOff Souvenir is another one which comes on Spotify and gets me in the gut.

This happened to me recently with Brilliant Trees by David Sylvian. It came up as suggested so I wasn’t expecting it and hadn’t heard it for years. It was like feeling the pain of teenage heartbreak all over again. His voice is achingly sad.
Love this thread. I’ll have a wallow in the playlist later.

Dannii689 · 22/01/2021 11:44

Mine is Lonely Day by System of a Down.

Claricethecat45 · 22/01/2021 12:09

Into My Arms - Nick Cave.

Not once been able to listen to it the whole way through without dissolving

KennethBakeOff · 22/01/2021 13:09

@tothesea thanks, absolutely loving this thread!

Also can't believe I've never been bothered to explore Nick Caves back catalogue. Scandalous!

LaBellina · 22/01/2021 13:14

Winter by Tori Amos.

When I was younger and going trough a break up, my ultimate 'Am I really over this guy test' was listening to 'Dreaming with a broken heart' by John Mayer. If I could listen to the song all the way from the beginning to the end without shedding tears, I knew I had moved on Blush

LaBellina · 22/01/2021 13:15

And 'Hurt' by Johnny Cash.

KaliforniaDreamz · 22/01/2021 14:45

Romeo and Juliet DIre Straits
Edge of Seventeen Stevie Nicks
Carey Joni Mitchel
Leave Right Now Will Young
(to the PP who mentioned this Will young track -
the video is brilliant if u grew up n the 70s.)

KaliforniaDreamz · 22/01/2021 14:47

Oh and to those who get misty eyed at kids' songs - i cannot get thtough The Solar System song without crying. It was my calm down song when i was losing it with small kids. That dark wonderful place we've all visited a few times. x

PeaceLoveAndCandy · 22/01/2021 15:56

I reckon Nick Cave has been mentioned the most here

@FirsAndFairylights I played that song a lot during the two years it took us to conceive our first child. I still sing it to both my children now Smile
