I’ve never had avocado

Around Christmas time there was a thread about what Christmas food people couldn’t get enough of and I remember stollen was very popular. So off I went to my local supermarket and picked up a bag of mini stollen bites... didn’t really like them but glad I tried them.

Now more to the point, a lot of people bang on about avocado on toast. I’ve never tasted avocado so before I go out and buy one only to dislike it I was wondering if anyone would be able to describe what it tastes like x

I can bring stollen. I'm on the Dutch-German border so can get the good stuff. And yes, we eat it for breakfast with butter, and good coffee.

Yay! @BaronessBomburst and @Blessex I so hope you enjoy it. It's on of my "death row" meals.

CorianderBee · 11/01/2021 00:10

Pickles are my favourite food 😍

Laufeythejust · 11/01/2021 00:10

I think they have a lovely texture but taste a bit soapy.

BriocheBuns · 11/01/2021 00:10

@BaronessBomburst - now I feel like I haven’t truly had stollen, the one I tried would be too sickly sweet to eat in the morning but the one you mention is making me want to come round to yours for breakfast

Oh brilliant. I think it's great to try new food. Lots of people don't get the chance when younger so ignore those silly comments. It's great that you want to and even if you try 5 things and hate 4, you'll find something new that you love which is fantastic.

BriocheBuns · 11/01/2021 00:12

@Blessex - it’s okay I’m happy we have all gained something or the other from this thread 🤣

@BriocheBuns just not too early then. Wink

BriocheBuns · 11/01/2021 00:13

@MagentaDoesNotExist - thanks ☺️ I was slightly embarrassed I hadn’t tried avocado yet but it’s just never appealed to me. I’m seeing everyone slap it on toast and say Mmmmmmm and I’m wondering am I missing out

It's a great thread OP! Thank you. I love broad beans so will try @Blessex's recipe. So great to all share food ideas!

@Codswallop20

Why eat that when cheese exists?

Words to live by, in so many situations.

It may not be to your taste, but all things are worth trying! I love avocados. One of my children would eat anything but avocado was the one food he hurled at the walls in disgust as a baby. Grin

Please stop. Mentions of seafood and cheese are going to get me started on how to make crab and cheese sauce for nachos... Grin

Ooooh the proper ones available locally! I am jealous. I have German family members but we live in the UK so we have to import it!
GoryGilmore · 11/01/2021 00:22

I love an avocado and banana smoothie. Don’t buy the Hass ones though, the little dark wrinkly ones are much nicer.

Codswallop20 · 11/01/2021 00:25

I think I have found my people Grin

MagentaDoesNotExist · 11/01/2021 00:26

@Furries

Am really surprised by the grass references!

OP - avocado is blooming gorgeous. Mash it up properly (I use a form to mash it), add a bit of salt and pepper (sometimes a very small squeeze of lemon or lime if I have one, but wouldn’t but one specifically for this) and then spread generously on toast.

Or, lightly toasted panini - spread with a bit of mustard mayo. Sliced chicken, strips of pre-cooked crispy bacon (M&S ones are good) and then scoops of avocado using a spoon along the top. Pure blooming heaven!

Mmmm yes crispy bacon and avocado is food heaven.
GoryGilmore · 11/01/2021 00:28

I might be mixing up my avocado types actually - are Hass the dark wrinkly ones? Either way, don’t buy the green ones, they never seem to ripen properly and taste soapy. Dark purpley ones are delicious.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 11/01/2021 00:31

Lovely with lime and salt, shit without! For me at least.

midlifecrash · 11/01/2021 00:38

an unripe avocado put me off for years. Yes Hass are better, add garlic crushed with salt, lemon or lime, a little olive oil, mix with fork until smooth with just a few lumps

Blessex · 11/01/2021 00:38

I mash my avocado with extra Virgin olive oil and white wine vinegar. That’s how my mum used to do it and now my DD does it too. Sometimes a grind of black pepper too.

Rose789 · 11/01/2021 00:39

Guacamole with tortilla chips- I’m all over it
Avocado on toast I would rather eat the clippings from the lawnmower
