I’ve never had avocado

Around Christmas time there was a thread about what Christmas food people couldn’t get enough of and I remember stollen was very popular. So off I went to my local supermarket and picked up a bag of mini stollen bites... didn’t really like them but glad I tried them.

Now more to the point, a lot of people bang on about avocado on toast. I’ve never tasted avocado so before I go out and buy one only to dislike it I was wondering if anyone would be able to describe what it tastes like x

The dominating comparison clearly seems to be grass

If you want to know how avocado tastes.....it's bleurrgggghh.

Why eat that when cheese exists? Just have a nice sandwich and save some food air miles too!
@MagentaDoesNotExist - I got mines from Lidl in the Xmas range. It contained almonds and marzipan and was dusted with powdery sugar stuff. Very strong, bit too strong. I think that’s what put me off.
That doesn't sound very traditional. I am not a huge fan of stollen but that's just my personal taste. My three year old however LOVES it. It contains almonds but that isn't the predominant flavour. It is packed with raisins and spiced with cardamom, cinnamon, orange peel etc.

A creamy grass
BriocheBuns · 10/01/2021 23:45

I’ve also never tried Tuna, Pickles, Gherkins, Seafood, the only fish I eat is fish fingers or Young’s breaded fish fillets.

Proper German stolen, especially homemade is amazing

MagentaDoesNotExist · 10/01/2021 23:46

I'm baffled that so many people thonk avocado tastes like grass. Clearly they did not attempt to eat grass like I did as a child. Grin

BriocheBuns · 10/01/2021 23:46

@MagentaDoesNotExist - ahhhh so there are different flavoured stollen..

I wouldn't bother with tuna but you are very much missing out on the others!! Life with no pickles? Sad
BriocheBuns · 10/01/2021 23:47

The grass theme is putting me off but I’m tempted to try it and report back

Your first try of an avocado has to be a really good one. Properly ripe etc. Don’t risk having shit rock hard one first time round!

BriocheBuns · 10/01/2021 23:48

@MagentaDoesNotExist - I like pickled onion flavour crisps. Do pickles taste like space raiders?

Veryverycalmnow · 10/01/2021 23:48

Nutty, creamy- tasting loveliness. I put a few slices on buttered toast with a pinch of salt.

partyatthepalace · 10/01/2021 23:48

Like a slightly less rich, nutty, grassy butter.

I think the dark knobbly skinned ones are much nicer than the smooth lighter green ones.

Mashed with salt and lime juice on toast, godly. Add feta n seeds and poached eggs. Or in chicken salad. But also just half them and add a garlicy French dressing to the middle 70s/80s style. But don’t bake them. People need to stop that.

Re Stollen. It varies massively. Can be moist and delicious, or dry and dull.

MagentaDoesNotExist · 10/01/2021 23:48

And no fresh fish? Prawns, crabs, mussels, even just a pan fried fillet of any fish? OP you must rectify this!

MagentaDoesNotExist · 10/01/2021 23:49

Hahahaaaa! No exactly but the same family of sour flavours! You must try some. What have you lost if you don't like them?

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 10/01/2021 23:49

I've just discovered dry fried hallumi with smashed avocado and sweet chilli sauce in toasted flat breads. Think it's now one of my favourite foods!!

Blessex · 10/01/2021 23:49

@BriocheBuns you haven’t tried some of my most favourite foods. Seafood yum. A good gherkin or pickle in a burger. Tuna with Mayo and sweet corn and cheese in a toasty! Yum!!!! Tuna melt Smile

Blessex · 10/01/2021 23:50

@HopingForOurRainbowBaby ok now you are really making me hungry. Going to make that tomorrow

minipie · 10/01/2021 23:50

Hass avocados. Agree!

MagentaDoesNotExist · 10/01/2021 23:52

Now someone's mentioned Halloumi I'll share a secret.

Cut a piece in half lengthwise. Dip in whisked egg then flour, then fry for a couple of mins each side until golden brown.

Serve with warmed honey mixed with dried oregano and (ideally black) sesame seeds, drizzled over the top.

You can thank me later. Smile

BriocheBuns · 10/01/2021 23:52

@Blessex - forgot to add Mayo, I have tried that but never again

OP posts:
MagentaDoesNotExist · 10/01/2021 23:52

That is also a great "cupboard" meal as Halloumi keeps for months in the fridge and the other ingredients keep even longer.

yahyahs22 · 10/01/2021 23:53

Avocado with salt, pepper and tomatoes makes for the best breakfast imo. Its creamy and filling. Super healthy, good fat too! Try it

Blessex · 10/01/2021 23:53

@MagentaDoesNotExist Jesus Christ. Screen grabbing.

@BriocheBuns I used to hate Mayo. It’s a grower.
